Fun Fact Sunday

You have probably heard of a celebrity who has a third or forth nipple, or maybe you know someone who has it, or you, yourself, has it. Have you ever wondered why it happens? Well, you can thank evolution for it.

In all mammals, nipples (and by extension breasts) form along a virtual line that goes from the armpit to the root of the thighs. In many animals (like cats and dogs) the breasts and nipples appear in the abdomino-pelvic  portion of the line, while in ungulates they appear on the pelvic region (think of where the cow’s udders are located). This placement along the milk line is invariant among mammals.

What varies instead, is that genes that are responsible for the appearance of the breasts and nipples in the different points, can be turned on or off by evolution. In primates for example, all points are turned off, except for the 2 thoracic ones. 

Sometimes though, these genes, due to expression malfunctions or mutations, happen to be switched on again. This causes the activation of an otherwise dormant gene, and the appearance of the supernumerary nipples.

The fact that humans and many mammals possess the genes to code for similar tissue structures, even though these structures do not appear in the adult form of said animals, is evidence for a common origin.
