matt touches his temple and finds sticky, coppery heat—the scent of blood buried under the dozens of herbs and flowers that fill the shop, dizzyingly strong—or maybe that’s just the probable concussion—as the woman crushes them in the mortar with steady hands and a steadier heart. not shaken in the slightest by a strange man stumbling in with a bleeding wound.

there’s whispers on the streets of harlem, where to go when you need help and can’t trust the hospitals. makes him wonder if it’s good or bad for a first impression that he’s not wearing the suit.

‘ —- is that calendula? ’

 a smile spreads over her lips at that,  and it doesn’t quite reach her eyes ---- he’s not the first outsider here, especially not one who’s familiar with knowledge of the herbs in her shop.  but the effort’s appreciated, at least.

for much of his early adult life, bruce found solace in the butch(/femme) community during his time at princeton as an undergraduate in the mid-1980′s. however, upon reading zines that circulated among the community’s members from various organizations around the country, he became aware of lou sullivan and ftm international. like many other trans men at the time, he realized the nuance between butchness and identifying as a man. it was from there that bruce coincided his sojourns abroad and away from gotham city with visiting various gender affirmation centers across europe, having already been taking testosterone during his time at princeton. his money and influence made maintaining anonymity and disappearing easier during his physical transition through several years. 

under his new legal name, bruce tuvya wayne, bruce enrolled in oxford university under a master’s degree in computer science, where he first learned mixed martial arts and began boxing underground. upon graduating, he moved to france, where he enrolled in the sorbonne, pursuing a master’s degree in neuroscience. it was there that he met medical student talia al ghul. the two married quickly, and this was the first time bruce ever fell in love with anyone else before. it was also where bruce learned a large amount of his training under ra’s al ghul. ultimately, his relationship with talia was short-lived, mostly because of the moral conflict between himself and ra’s, and bruce left for gotham city once more. 

when bruce returned to gotham, he received a great amount of attention and scrutiny in local tabloids due to his transition, especially with the playboy persona he chose to adopt at first that was both a front for the batman persona and a way that he affirmed his own masculinity for a very long time. however, disillusioned with his own facade and his father’s infamy looming over him, bruce quickly broke off from that publicized image, and has kept himself out of the media for a very long time. no relationship seemed to fulfill him the way his relationship with talia had, despite how short-lived it had been. it was when bruce opened himself up to dating men-aligned folks that he realized he was allowed nuance in his identity, and it wasn’t long before he was openly bi. despite his struggles with his father’s name tacked onto him, bruce has become a local and international figure in the trans community as a bi trans man, and much of the fortune his father had accumulated has gone toward such causes. the grounds of wayne manor itself has been given to disadvantaged and mentally ill folks, many of whom had been incarcerated at arkham with nowhere to go afterward. 

and, now, nearing 50-years-old, bruce is at peace with himself, finally, at least in his gender identity, after a very long life of working toward it.

dex isn’t used to being indulged like this, that much is clear. even if it’s just a slice, or however steph put it. leaving the confines of his apartment, venturing beyond the bodega downstairs - it’s a foreign experience. he’s never been lured by pineapple pizza before, but it’s steph, and he won’t question it - and it’s better than he thought it’d be, anyway.  

it’d ruin things considerably if he let on just how tense he is, just how watched he feels and just how on edge he’s being. but when he knocks over his glass of coke without thinking he sighs, quickly wiping up his mess with compostable napkins, irritably pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers. great.

notes on divergences for my bruce wayne: 

this interpretation of bruce wayne is set twenty to thirty years into his career, post-knightfall, specifically. bruce is struggling with the aftermath of the earthquake in gotham as well as the limitations and advantages of his (dis)ability. damian wayne is currently his robin and he works alongside the justice league, when needed, though he’s slowly edging into retirement and batman beyond territory

instead of living up to his father’s legacy, i’ve decided to delve into a similar mythos depicted in joker (2019), the long halloween, and the telltale batman game. bruce’s father was corrupt, a brutal figurehead of wall street and the top 1%, and was gunned down in front of him by joe chill in the midst of a riot in gotham city. in an effort to move away from the legacy of his father, he renovated the decayed remains of wayne manor into a school and home for disadvantaged youth. he moved himself into an apartment on the outskirts of gotham city. 

he’s killed the joker, who is the same bastard as comic joker. i don’t care. tommy elliot is the only archnemesis i recognize on this blog.

despite his best efforts, he maintains a strained relationship with his children, having already named dick as his next of kin. he’s always held them at an arm’s lengths, and it’s one of the regrets he carries with him. 

and, despite changing his family’s company, his father’s infamy hangs over him like an albatross. there’s no amount of trying to unlearn the bullshit he’s been fed on a silver spoon since he was a child that can successfully and completely undo it. you cannot be a billionaire in 2019 and still be a superhero - it’s not possible. but bruce is Trying, albeit not exactly successfully.
