Someone asked her about it on ask.fm. I guess all this debate about this scene will be answered in the comic itself!
Q: ... In chapter 5, the scene where Bum puts rat poison in the soup and wants to feed it to Sangwoo raised a question discussed with my friends. We’re really curious, so I ask as our representative! Sangwoo made Bum swallow the soup and tasted it himself and said “Hm... kinda salty.” If he also ate it, why didn’t he get an upset stomach like Bum? ...
Koogi: Hello! It’s hard to answer because it might be a spoiler. T_T I’m sorry, since you asked a long-awaited question!
Has no one asked Koogi about this rat poison dilemma yet?
No idea! Her social media is mostly in Korean, I think, so I don’t really keep track of it except what people post and translate in the tag…. But I haven’t seen anyone ever say in the tag that Koogi has talked about the rat poison on ask.fm, Twitter, or anywhere else.
It’d be great if someone who knows Korean could ask her to clarify exactly what happened in that scene!

Death of the author, though. :p I don’t think it matters whether or not Koogi did much research beforehand... Especially since the opening chapter explicitly establishes BPD as a lens through which to understand Bum. Silly Koogi.
i’m angry tbh lmao. what’s even the point of my blog!!! :’)

what does "oppa" & "kya" mean?
Hi, I’m very sorry for the super late reply!
I try to keep the Korean phrases that have no easy English equivalents in my translations, because I think it helps in understanding the characters’ relationships more fully. In Korean, the following terms are common to refer to others:
hyung (형) = how a male calls an older malenoona (누나) = how a male calls an older femaleoppa (오빠) = how a female calls an older maleunnie (언니) = how a female calls an older female
Typically, it’s respectful for a younger person to use these words to refer to someone at least a year older than them with whom they’re friendly. So since Bum is older than Sangwoo, in public he would be expected to refer to Bum as “Bum-hyung.”
I find it funny because obviously their relationship isn’t like that at all – in private, Bum is the one who refers to Sangwoo with respectful language. He calls him “Sangwoo-ssi,” where “ssi (씨)” is the equivalent of “Mr.” or “Ms.”
And “kya” is just the Korean transliteration of a feminine scream.

Small correction after reading the official Chapter 19 English version... they translated the last sentence as “Good work” instead of “You really suffered.” ‘고생하다’ means “to suffer” but is also used colloquially to mean “you worked hard.” The preceding dialogue made me read the last sentence as Sangwoo referring to Bum having a hard time in the past, but I can see how it’s probably complimenting him on killing Jieun... :)
sangwoo dialogue in ch 19 (spoilers)
The stuff Sangwoo says at the end of the chapter after Bum kills Jieun sounded to me like he’s projecting his own motivations for killing onto Bum? He says:
“What are you blaming yourself for? You were always the victim that had to hurt and struggle, weren’t you. You have to release your accumulated, pent-up resentment at some point. You must’ve been sick of acting all good and innocent. You really suffered.”
If Sangwoo also saw himself as the victim of his father’s abuse and had pent-up anger about it, then perhaps the first time he killed he realized it was a good way to vent that frustration? The way he says it (”그 쌓은 울분을 풀어줘야지”) strikes me like he’s talking about having to relieve stress once in a while, lol. This is like the first time we get some indication of why Sangwoo kills people?

Also it makes me wonder how much more Sangwoo is projecting his younger self (or mom) onto Bum, and how much he is subconsciously or not reliving his past? It’s like teaching his younger self/mom his trusty method of dealing with abuse lol. Just kill! Makes you feel way better.
It’s fucked up though cuz the one who victimized Bum (at least in the past few months) is Sangwoo himself? Is that the reason for the pent-up frustration he’s talking about, or did he realize Bum was having a flashback and killed Jieun in place of someone who hurt him? I’m just confused how Sangwoo sees himself in relation to Bum -- does he see himself as Bum’s abuser? Or does he think he is doing well by Bum now?
Orrrr he was just saying all that stuff to placate Bum and doesn’t mean it, and I shouldn’t read into it. Lmao idk.

I forgot to explain the Korean words... Sangwoo refers to Bum as “Bumie-hyung”, which is an affectionate/dimunitive form of Bum’s name (“-ie”) plus “hyung,” which is how a male would refer to an older male. It connotes respect, so it’s strange to see Sangwoo keep calling Bum that, haha.
Jieun calls Sangwoo “oppa,” which is how girls refer to older guys. It has a somewhat flirty and friendly connotation so it’s interesting that she keeps using it even when Sangwoo is physically manhandling her. I guess it’s kind of like she’s trying to appeal to his sense of male protectiveness for a younger girl?
Also it’s interesting that Bum slips from calling Sangwoo “-ssi” (sign of polite distance) to the informal “Sangwoo-yah” in parts!

KS Chapter 18 Translation (spoilers)
Line-by-line translation for those with access to the full Korean raw... includes screenshots of some panels. Please forgive any inaccuracies or awkward phrasing.
Sangwoo (SW), Jieun (JE), Bum (B). Square brackets indicate thoughts.
---
SW: I feel like breast milk will come out.
JE: What are you saying, haha. Don’t joke~ *sucking sounds*
SW: Jieun, come here. *brings her to fuck her against the closet*
JE: Ah! Unh! Haa! Ahh! Oppa, I can’t... unh! My legs... are weak..! Haaa...! Oppa~ let me see your face...
B: [Crazy... I feel insane. I don’t even know what’s going on right now, but I think... I want to touch the sweat on his hand and put it to my mouth.]
B: [Sangwoo-yah...] *SW squeezes his hand too tight* Ha...!
JE: Haaahhn!
B: *covers his mouth* Mmphh... *bites SW’s finger*
SW: Ugh... *grimaces*
JE: What’s wrong? Oppa... did you come?
SW: Haha, no way... Don’t you feel I’m still hard as a rock?
JE: Haah!! Oppa... You were really cool today... and thanks...
SW: It’s nothing... you did beautifully today, too...
JE: Hehe...
SW: But Jieun... Why were you so angry today?
JE: Huh? What? Me?
SW: Yeah. At Bum-hyung. *looks up at Bum in the closet*
JE: When did I get mad~ And why are you talking about that now?
SW: Why’d you get angry?
JE: ....... Um, well... it’s just... you were late to the afterparty, and it was because of that person... and...
SW: And?
JE: ..... That person, at least, shouldn’t have seen me messing up at the talent show. Getting ridiculed by that kind of person hurts my pride. That’s why.
SW: That kind of person? What kind is ‘that kind of person’?
JE: Are you mad? Why do you keep asking about this?
SW: Tell me. I’m curious.
JE: Well... he’s weird, you know. And his legs are crippled, too. His eyes are sunken and his face is kinda gaunt. And when he was beside me, I thought he kinda smelled, too.
SW: Wow... hey~ that’s really... even I’m cringing hearing that.
JE: Oppa, why are you talking about this now? I don’t understand.
SW: I don’t get it either... Aren’t you being too honest in front of the person you’re talking about? Bumie-hyung probably feels hurt.
JE: What are you saying? In front of the person...? Oppa, you know you seem really strange right now? You’ve ruined the mood. What are you trying to say!
SW: What am I trying to say~? I’m saying that Bumie-hyung is right here~ you stupid thing.
JE: What?
SW: Bumie-hyung! You heard? You bore the stuffy closet well. You can come out now! *opens door*
SW: Kya.
JE: KYAAAA!!!! G-get out of my way!! You crazy bastard!! *kicks him, runs to rattle door* The hell, why won’t it open?!
SW: Jieun~ Where are you going in the middle of sex? Come here.
JE: Ack!
SW: Why are you being so mannerless? Hmm?
JE: Ackk!! S-save me...!! Let me go!! Gah!
SW: Would you please come out? *to Bum*
JE: Let go! Let go, fuck!!!
B: *crawls out of closet*
JE: Stop! Let go! Ahhhh!! Ahhhh.... Oppa! Oppa! Don’t do this!
JE: Oppa, please..!! I made a mistake!! Please...! Let go..!! I said let go!! STOP IT!!! *punches SW in the eye as he’s trying to chain her down*
JE: Hiiicc... SAVE ME!!!! *runs up stairs* PLEASE SAVE ME!!
SW: *throws wrench at her, chains her down* Phew... Bum, come down. Careful, careful.
JE: Oppa... Oppa... oppa... save me. I made a mistake. If you let me go, I swear I won’t tell anyone. I’ll drop out of school and disappear like I’m dead! I’ll do anything!
SW: Anything? I’m glad you said that~
B: S-sangwoo-ssi...
SW: Then try having sex with Bumie-hyung. If you do, I’ll send you home.
JE: I’ll do it! I said I will!!
SW: Really?
SW: Could you do it? With a cripple... Even with an ugly, gaunt-faced loser?
JE: I’ll do it!
SW: No way~? I don’t think you can?? Even though he smells?
JE: I can do it!! I’M SAYING I CAN DO IT!! I CAN DO IT!! I SAID I CAN DO IT!!
SW: Filthy to the end... I’m talking about you. Have you ever felt anything like gratitude in your entire life? Probably not. Everyone puts you on a pedestal because you’re pretty. It’s true, you are pretty. But... If we were to show people your appearance, carved into pieces, I wonder if they’d really be able to call you pretty then? No, they’d probably be disgusted and pity you. That’s how weak and fleeting outward appearance is. Didn’t we learn? That the important thing is a person’s inner self. Because the beauty of the inner self lasts forever! Understand?
SW: You, who goes around putting faith in the flimsiest aspect of a person, have no right to swear at or criticize anyone. Because you soon... won’t be able to say anything even if you want to.
JE: Eeek... You crazy bastard! Where the hell do you get off preaching? You perverted psycho bastard!!! You think you can get away with doing this to me?! I’m going to kill you!! I’m going to throw you in jail, or have you put to death, or kill you!!
SW: Woah~ how scary. Why are you saying that to me? If you’re begging ‘cause you want to live, then say it to Bumie-hyung...
JE/B: ?!
SW: Do you remember the man we killed together? That was all just practice for this. To give you confidence.
B: S-Sangwoo--
SW: Bum. For the sake of this moment, I gave up and sacrificed a lot of things. Finally, my effort has born fruit. Aren’t you happy? We can now truly be together, until death.
-- ** I think the last line is meant to be read as both “we can be together until we die” and “we can even share killing together”? Or maybe I’m reading too much into it...
