if you wiped every ICE agent off the face of the earth, a hundred million people would become safer overnight. if you wiped every furry off the face of the earth, the entire internet would collapse for good in a matter of hours. i know where my allegiances lie.

i genuinely think steven taylor had a major impact on the doctor as a person. ian and barbara instilled a fundamental sense of morality in the doctor, and he would not have been a hero without them, but steven gives the doctor something else - perspective, perhaps. steven is the first companion who threatens to leave the doctor because of the death he leaves in his wake. he's not the first companion to challenge the doctor's morality - that would be barbara - but i do think steven acts as a direct challenge to the doctor's newfound sense of morality. ian and barbara saw how the doctor was a direct threat to their lives, but steven's whole problem is that he survives what everyone else doesn't. barbara's anger with the doctor in early season one is directly related to his action - he intentionally and repeatedly imperils lives for the sake of his own curiosity. but steven's anger is different - he's frustrated by the doctor's inaction. in the massacre, the doctor functionally abandons steven and then returns solely to rescue steven - not any of the other people at risk, not even one person. that stands in direct contrast to a very famous scene in the fires of pompeii; more closely in the doctor's personal timeline, it stands in direct contrast to the doctor taking jamie with him in the highlanders. prior to the massacre, the doctor is unwilling to interfere with history in such a direct fashion, even though he has no problem with other meddling. but after that, he's willing to save people from the past - and it's steven who challenges him on that. likewise, steven is the doctor's first solo companion. between the myth makers and the massacre, the tardis is a bit of a revolving door - people who might be companions keep coming and going, and largely, they're going because they died. in the daleks' master plan, all three of the proto-companions the doctor picks up die horribly in quick succession, in front of the doctor and steven, and steven is unable to save any of them. steven is the doctor's only constant company across that period, the only one who stays when everyone else leaves. steven is the only one who survives. and at the end of it all, standing surrounded by life withered to dust, the doctor calls steven not my dear or my boy, but my friend. for all the differences they have, they share one thing: they've gone through everything together. except, like vicki before him and dodo after him, like katarina and bret vyon and sara kingdom, steven does leave. he snaps. he can't take all the deaths. so he chews the doctor out, and demands to leave. and the doctor... lets him. so he leaves. and the doctor gives a deeply moving speech about his loneliness. but here's the real difference - steven comes back. god knows why, but i think he knows he can't stay in the twentieth century, that he, like the doctor, is too deeply adrift from a life lived in order to be able to settle down just like that. there are many companions who would never have left the doctor, but for steven i don't think it's really a choice - it's not that he and the doctor are tied together by fate, because they're not; it's not that he has nowhere to go back to, because he probably does; it's not that he would never choose to leave, because he does! but it doesn't stick, because nothing ever stays for steven. even if he stands still, the ground will still crumble beneath his feet. just like the doctor. they share loss. and if ian and barbara give the doctor a sense of heroism and morality, then i think steven gives the doctor a sense of the personal - a sense of the importance of small victories. he's learnt to care for other people and save the world; now he needs to accept that even in a hopeless situation, there are still things he can do. he can't go running through people's lives like they're nothing, and let death catch up with them. there is still hope. jamie and victoria are living proof of that.

Thing w the first doctor is he has probably the most dramatic character development of any of the doctors (new & classic) and that's one of the really fun things about watching his era retrospectively as you get to watch him choosing to stop being a detached observer and be The Doctor. He arcs out big time ok.

i swear no one understands the fifth doctor outside of tumblr. he is not your "nice boyfriend" he is a horrible pastiche of edwardian masculinity seething with barely-repressed rage which challenges the 'passive' in passive-aggressive. the only reason he hasn't punched you is he made a solemn vow to only threaten people with guns in this incarnation

I always liked the anime illustrations in the original NES Zelda manual, and it saddened me to find out these weren鈥檛 actually part of a real animated promotion for the game. So I decided to take those illustrations and re-create them as if they were!
Enjoy this long-lost VHS promotion for the Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System!

If you did answer this poll, please take a second to stop scrolling.
If you haven't already heard Israel is still attempting to block aid going to Gaza and even threatening people over it. It is also Eid al-Adha, a holiday in which large feasts are prepared.
There are a lot of people sharing campaigns to donate money for food and other necessities for survival in Gaza. I am sharing Nader's family's campaign.
This is a small way to help make a big difference in a family's life struggling for survival under occupation. Every donation counts.
