Modernism - modern
Mid-century modern - used to be modern, but is now retro
Post-modern - more modern than the other moderns
Nouveau - modern, but not modern, and also French
I love when the names of art movements and genres become completely anachronistic because they were named essentially "new modern thing"

It's probably been discovered many times before over hundreds, if not thousands of years, but all the discoverers so far had been identifying it as "fuck me, look at the bloody size of that stick insect", or some rough equivalent in the local Aboriginal language
The bird app has a lot of garbage but this thread really tickled me this morning:

See? This guy gets it, go with the Dad jokes
if a guy asked me for my daughter’s hand in marriage I’d be like “ew, what the fuck is wrong with you? you want this to be a handshake deal like you’re buying a prize heifer? you’re disgusting, what an objectifying thing to do before asking a beautiful, confident, intelligent adult woman to spend the rest of her life with you… HAHA. just kidding. got you, sonny. go ahead. was a little weird to ask me but I guess you’re still engulfed in the patriarchal fog. do some self-improvement before you become someone’s husband.” and I’m sitting on a rocking chair on my porch in some ratty overalls and a flannel shirt with a banjo on my knee during this conversation

I remember this handy guide for tree shapes I saw when proofreading a horticulture resource about identifying plant species
Tumblr media
When I was a kid I had some art lessons and the only thing I clearly remember from them is that you shouldn't draw a tree like a stick with some leaves on top of it. A tree is this grandiose, branching structure, uneven and thick

So, I went to the forest today AND ITS ALL STICKS are you kidding me

I think the correct response for all self-respecting dads when asked for their daughter's hand in marriage is to ask "just her hand?"

And of course lead based petrol was the norm, she would have been breathing that. Even if she grew up rural on a farm it's high odds she was exposed to herbicides, pesticides, household cleaning chemicals, weird medicines etc. DDT was sprayed around my grandad's farm, and dad said his dog was accidentally poisoned by the arsenic used in the cattle dip.

Seem to be quite a few issues like this where other countries are like "but why don't you just standardise it" and America being like "well, we have 50 states that want to do their own thing and have been doing it for 250 or so years, and if we change it we risk another civil war"
I know there was a lot of pushback on bringing in standard 10% GST in Australia, it took a long time to establish, but at least there were only 7 states to argue with.
we should make fun of americans more. why dont their shops include tax in the price tag. like how much does this item cost? its a surprise :)

One of the dumbest gender-related bathroom situations I've been in recently was at a public music festival, where some of the events were in a park. I go to use the park toilets, which were 4 cubicles, all with full length walls and doors, all identical inside and all just opening straight out onto the same open-air sink area, so it's not like you go into a separate male or female area, and there's no urinals and no tampon bins inside the cubicles. There was no real difference in cleanliness. But the individual cubicles had mens or women's signs on them.
So there's the usual line up of women waiting for the designated women's cubicles, and a handful of men who quickly come and go past the line to use the men's. And by the time I'm like 4th in line I'm busting, and there's now 2 of the men's cubicles unused and no sign of any men around wanting to use them. So I said to the women in front "do you want to use those ones, seeing as no one seems to be needing them?" And they all looked at me like I was crazy and one was like "those are the men's". And I was like fuck it, skipped the queue while they all judged me and used the men's one while like 20 women lined up waiting for one of the two other cubicles just because of the sign on the door.
why do people think gender neutral bathrooms would have less privacy. i’d like to have ungendered restrooms with ceiling-to-floor walls and stall doors you can’t see over, under or between the cracks. i don’t want to and don’t need to know the gender of the person in the stall next to mine

Australia just has 10% GST and it's always 10% and includes that in the shelf price at stores. Your supermarket receipt adds up the shelf prices of all your items, which is all most people want or need to know, but also tells you at the bottom how much of that total you paid was GST in case you do want to know that. They generally even have asterisks or some marker next to the products that include GST.

when i was little and i went to church people would talk about “fearing god.” they would use ‘’fear’ to describe like a way of respecting him while understanding his power and i never knew what that  meant until i met a fucking horse

In America swimming naked in public pools was the norm for boys and men right up into the 70s, like it was actually considered unhygienic to wear swimwear in a public pool (of course separate rules for women and girls, who had to cover up). School swimming races were done naked. They would straight up print photos of naked guys swimming in newspapers because it was so normalised. So it is a bit funny that the conservative people who want to return to the good old days are also the ones who are most scandalised about nudity and sexualised it so much.
you'd think "nudity on its own is not taboo in many cultures of the world" is essential trivia that everyone encounters by the age of ten, which informs people how taboos are non-rigid social constructs. but no, every day you will meet people containing a lifetime of informed opinions and moral frameworks, whose world views would be shattered by telling them "nudity on its own is not taboo in many cultures of the world"

Have to say though, the swing between that portrayal of Bucky being self hating and feeling worthless, sleeping on the floor because of PTSD and nightmares, being all stoic and broody, to "Bucky's a congressman now" felt bizarre to me. Because I love the guy, but there's a level of confidence and conviction you need to do campaign speeches and debates and talking to the media that we just hadn't seen from Bucky yet, with a lot of pressure and personal attacks from the opposition and media about his past as an assassin for Russia/Hydra, so he's obviously a commie or something (a far worse crime than just killing people of course). And then that was quickly followed by "Congressman Barnes can't string a sentence together in front of the press asking questions" in Thunderbolts.
unpopular opinion: TFATWS was the ONLY Marvel project that understood Bucky (and John Walker).

statistically most generations' voting preferences become more conservative as they got older, so political views are already known to change with age for everyone else. Like with that logic they may as well go "well, voting age should be raised to 25 when most people aren't students anymore, or tied to when you've had kids or own property, or any of the other factors that might change your political views".
I find the argument that 16 year olds shouldn’t vote because “there political views change” funny because your political views are always meant to change regardless of age
I’m 29 my political views are diffrent from when I was 25 because the world and country has changed
