This seems like the opposite of losing chess to a dog. I'm not a particularly good chess player, but I'd still be impressed by a dog beating me at chess. I'd be charmed by it. Look at this adorable dog! She plays chess, plays it better than me! What a smart girl! She even knows what the pieces are, and how to move them! Let us all gather round to give belly rubs and treats to the chess playing dog!
I do not have this same reaction to having my hopes dashed by RTD
having faith in rtd and then getting let down is like losing chess to a dog

yeah well the "not judge" part has its own danger, there's accounts about people spiralling into psychosis and delusions induced and encouraged by ChatGPT, convinced they are unearthing deep universal truths or conspiracies, even committing suicide. It needs a bit of judgement to set boundaries and read the warning signs, to realise "ok, things have gone too far" and talk people back down off the ledge, but it doesn't have that.
those ads for ai integration on phones are so funny bc it seems like they cant. come up with that many use cases that arent already on a phone? "ask gemini to give you recipes when youre cooking!" "use our AI assistant to find the perfect gift for your girlfriend" yeah or i could just like. google it. you've spent millions on a slightly fancier version of an alexa. good job man.

i had to get a new phone recently and it was like "AI Boost helps your phone seek out the strongest local mobile network and automatically connect to it" but I'm pretty sure my old phone did that while travelling without anything labelled AI, it definitely switched itself between remembered wifi networks, and I'm not sure what makes that intelligence? The phone has a sensor turned on, it senses a thing, it has a single programmed response triggered by the thing. I'm not super techy, but this doesn't seem like a new concept.
I am convinced that AI is just a new buzzword to replace "smart". I feel like an old person ranting here, but it wasn't that long ago it was all the magic of smart phones, smart TVs, smart appliances, and now that seems to have just been replaced with "intelligent" for marketing reasons, and so they can sell you a premium subscription so you can open your fridge.

I grew up watching early to mid-2000s pop music videos, and nobody who lived through the era of Benny Benassi's "Satisfaction" video with the power tools is allowed to be shocked by anything Sabrina Carpenter has worn, posed as or created, she is a porcelain doll in comparison. There were so many bouncing boobs and buttocks barely contained by string bikinis and booty shorts during that period, as well as the odd sets of wet abs from the guys. Even the official video for WAP is maybe not tame compared to music videos of that era, but would probably fit into it (although CardiB and Meegan the Stallion might have been considered too curvy during that fatphobic time ). And OP is right, it was all so much sweatier and stickier, like Britney Spears Slave 4 U and Christina Aguilera's Dirty
popular culture used to be very much about eroticism. rockstars used to be on stage in sequins and thongs and thigh high boots playing guitars like they were masturbating. girls used to wear velvet mini dresses and no bras and red-brick-brown lipstick and mascara on their bottom lashes. people used to have body hair on television and in the movies. people used to be sweaty. people used to touch each other over denim and under cotton. foreplay used to be staring at someone over the rim of a glass across a bar across a park across a dinner table. people used to want. i think we’ve lost something

Yesterday morning I woke, made coffee, flicked onto Bluesky, and the first post I saw was a Dutch article with the headline "Trump: We hebben Iran gebombardeerd" and my first thought was "haha, Dutch language is so funny, it's like when AI tries to generate images with English text". Anyway, that's how I found out we're all at war again
I’d like to live through a week that’s not a whole new verse of “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”

@geekandmisandry it looks like you're either in Australia or somewhere with similar enough voting laws - So, I'm in Queensland Australia, and in 2014 our state brought in voter ID laws for our state and local elections (thanks to Campbell fucking Newman's LNP government at the time). But because it was a decision brought in by state government, we don't have to have ID for federal elections, it was decided that would put Queensland voters at a disadvantage and not in line with other states. But also because we still have mandatory voting, even in state and local elections we actually can't legally be turned away from voting if we show up at the polling booth without ID, so there's some declaration or statement thing you have to do if that situation arises - it's not something I've ever had to do, so I don't know the details. Of course requiring ID automatically already penalizes marginalised and disadvantaged people, and there was a backlash after the first election were ID was required, so the ID requirements are pretty broad to allow for people not having drivers licence or whatever. But also Queensland Electoral Commission sends out identifying barcodes or QR codes in emails and the post. So I get both addressed to my name, and I can take either one of those to the polling booth, wave it under the scanner as my check-in, collect my ballot from the volunteer and do my thing.
Which is all to say it's very stupid that we have this ID thing in Queensland, because it's been made so broad and toothless that we may as well not have it at all, and it's clearly not considered a problem in federal elections and we're no worse at fraud than any other state, it's just that we had a conservative state government at one point that decided to be dicks about it thinking maybe it could benefit them, and now we're stuck with it until someone decides to change it back.
But yes, this is also exhibit A of the benefit of mandatory voting and an independent electoral commission.
I was thinking about how I have grown to value mandatory voting over a system that allows allegedly more freedom. Because in country, mandatory voting means I just have to send in a ballot. It can be empty or filled with the write in ballot "pickle farts" if I want.
If I go to the voting station all I have to do is get my name checked off. I don't have to vote if I don't want to.
But it means it is much more difficult for the government to try and suppress voters. Because voters have a legal obligation to go to the polls, so you can't restrict them or try tactics to dissuade them.
Voting polls are open long hours with access to food and water being a fairly standard staple. You don't need any form of ID, you have to be given time to go vote in work hours without penalty if you cannot do it after work hours.
Every now and then a politician tries some small way of voter suppression but it isn't as easy. And so I have learned to appreciate it.
But when I googled, out of curiosity, if the USA had ever had anything like that I was met with a barrage of websites talking about freedom and justice and the absolute liberty of Americans. I thought an eagle was going to bust out of the screen.
Going through some of these I noticed they were think tanks connected to billionaires, one of them was funded and created by the Koch brothers.
Gotta love how often the American "freedom" is actually used as a way to further deny actual freedoms, both linguistically and politically.

Sudden thought, there is an insurance company in Wish World, a world where the weather is always perfect and even the homeless people with disabilities have some kind of magical healthcare protecting them, according to Shirley. Who's paying them insurance? What are they insuring against? Coffee cup damage?
Conrad: I'm going to create a perfect world in which women aren't allowed to work
Kate: And I'm Kate Stewart 😌

Wonder what random unknown doctor guy's life was like before his reality was changed, when at least 4 years of lived experience was undone to ensure he was with Belinda long enough to produce Poppy. He could have had a wife and other kids in the other reality that he was made to never meet, he could have missed out on other achievements and opportunities, he could have not been in the right place at the right time to save lives, the Doctor wouldn't know.
I just remembered that after the Doctor has adjusted reality and he and Belinda are talking about Poppy, Belinda mentions that Poppy's father is a doctor at her hospital who sees Poppy regularly (can't actually remember if she said he has part custody or just visits and contact, but it seems an amicable arrangement). And I get that he's supposed to be an alternative father figure when the Doctor couldn't be, but there was no sign Belinda even had any relationship waiting for her return, or even showed any friendly interaction with a doctor in her first episode that might have suggested a potential relationship.
So not only did the Doctor change Belinda's reality to be a mother despite her never expressing a desire for it, but he also changed this random unknown guy's reality without his consent.

the Master gets all depressed because it's not as much fun when he doesn't have a goody two shoes Doctor to scheme against, and also the Doctor is doing evil so much better than him. He starts sabotaging the Doctor's evil plans to get attention again
I think it would be really funny if the doctor went full dark side and the master immediately is like "wait....oh my God this is weird go back" and then starts scheming on how to make the doctor care about humanity again. he thought it would be sexy but the doctor is really good at evil and the master is shaking like 'please have empathy remember empathy you love empathy'

imagine: you get your memories back after years of amnesia to find out your whole species is dead and earth doesn’t exist anymore. that the only thing left of your culture is your weird ex and his busted honda civic that barely even works that he stole from the government when he was 13. And he’s been taking members of an alien species for trips in his honda civic and they’re all like “woah it’s so cool” and you get upset because it’s NOT COOL it’s a honda civic, the turn signals don’t even work “wow it can go up hills” yeah OF COURSE IT CAN GO UP HILLS EVERY CAR COULD DO THAT. but they’ve never seen a car before so everything it does is the coolest thing ever. And your ex’s only tool is a fucking screwdriver which is somehow also cool to this dumbass alien species even though it’s a fucking screwdriver so you just look like an idiot screaming about how none of this is even cool it’s actually really shitty but your whole planet is gone so you can’t even prove it but also you’ve had a constant drumming sounding in your head since you were 10 slowly driving you insane. I would become evil too.

There's ways of reinventing characters without totally throwing the original concept out the window with no explanation. Like if original Omega had no body, he could have appeared like that here, then wish for a physical form or gain the physical form through Rani science, or even just consuming Rani helps him regain physical form. Feeding off wishes or feeding off doubts or whatever. Rani used those to crack the world open and let him through, but there was no mention of it giving him physical form. Doctor Who is a great show for reviving and reinventing old characters, but you need a link from the old to the new to make it make sense, and preferably not just in exposition, show the change happening
Russell literally what on EARTH are you talking about sir

I love how humans have literally not changed throughout history like the graffiti from Pompeii has people from hundreds of years ago writing stuff like “Marcus is gay” “I fucked a girl here” “Julius your mum wishes she was with me” and leonardo da vinci’s assistants drew dicks in their notebooks just for the banter and mozart created a piece called “kiss my ass” so when people wish for ‘today’s generation’ to be like ‘how people used to’ then we’re already there buddy we’ve always been

There was a fantastic unfinished Good Omens fic by jessthereckless I had subscribed to, the author stopped writing in April 2024 but I was still checking and re-reading regularly, it was such a good comfort read. Finally in Feb 2025 I commented asking if she was planning on finishing it, she said no because the news about Gaiman had come out and she felt like she'd lost faith in it. I told her it was a shame, because it really felt that by writing these strong funny interpretations of the characters she'd taken ownership of them and made them something new. And this morning I saw the notification that she'd finished the fic! She changed her mind wrote a glorious final chapter that was funny and beautiful and bittersweet and had the extra punch of really good moral to take away especially in today's scary times.
the full 2-part series is The One With the Carrot if anyone is interested in a raunchy, hilarious and sweet fic about lesbian Crowley and Aziraphale. The first is a deviation from the original Good Omens story, the second is them dealing with small town drama and fighting bigots in the Southern Downs. Highly recommend.
I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.
I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.
The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.
Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.
