for the first time since theyâd begun their walk, the young woman was in any rush to ask another question, taking a moment to absorb his response. she understood what he meant, as far as not putting on a facade and staying true to oneself even in front of the public eye though she was thinking more so how it often began to weigh on her having to always be smiling and keeping a brave face even in her worst moments. before she knew it theyâd reached their destination and seeing the guard she made some effort to further straighten her posture and though she consider releasing the man she didnât want to risk worsening the pain by putting her full weight on the leg. âthank you once again for getting me this far.â she said smiling up at him.
for, edward, it wasnât necessarily hard to keep a smile or a brave face on if you will. after all, he underwent his worst moment in the public eye - his fatherâs death, and as clique as it could ever be the people of his country are what really pushed him through his mourning phase. â trying to get rid of me so soon, â he chuckled. â at the very least get the swelling down, â emerald eyes glancing down at the state of her foot. once them finally reached his guard, edward gave him a pat on the arm and a â mate, â before the ice pack heâd asked for on the phone earlier was placed in his hand.Â

vittoria tried to rake her brain for something she might want to know, when she was in uni she was much more keen to following up on major articles about affluent royal figures in europe. at the moment she was drawing a blank though she was sure sheâd remember something later as usual. instead she settled to just ask something to keep the conversation going, to keep her mind occupied away from her aching ankle. âdoes it ever get tiring? always having to beâŚon?â no matter the kind of day you might be having always conscious of your image, always having to grit your teeth and hold your composure.
â i wouldnât say it gets tiring. â his gaze broke away from her as he thought of his further explanation, not necessarily self editing how to respond but more so making sure he relaid his position in the best way. â iâm lucky in many ways, â he continued, not only had he hit the genetic lottery with the family he was born into but he had in many ways hit the lottery in being who he is, not his title but as a person, â i wouldnât really say iâm ever on, â he told her, â iâm just me, itâs outside of myself to behave in a way that would be cause for concern, â edward knew he had a good reputation and he was hyper-aware of the way he was perceived but the only things he was ever really willing to change about himself is how he ruled as king. his guard now coming into eye sight as both himself and the duchess rounded the corner, into his wing of the palace.Â

She often found herself wandering the palace late at night. It was her second home after all, and despite its grandeur always felt comfortable to her. For the last 4 years she had free roam of the place, within reason, but now with the new arrivals it was hard for the girl to find a moment to herself. One where she didnât need to be on her best behavior. There was a secluded section of the building that most wouldnât notice if they past by. It was her favorite hiding spot one she disclosed to a select few. Finally alone the girl took out her book, itâs spine broken with folded and creased pages, it was clear the book had been well loved. You could tell she had read it cover to cover hundreds of times. Nowadays she could only make it to chapter 12. As the door swung open her book shut synchronized. Genevieve stood to her feet, a habit she had created with all the new royalty entering. Of hadnât expected anyone to be out this late. âI thought I was the only person who knew this room even existed.â She explained annoyance hinting on her face.
with his family running around, other dignitaries at every corner of the palace, and his own guards just outside his assigned room, edward needed some time away from it all. something he often did back home, in fairness he controlled what rooms were special to him or not back home. the same could not be said for the genovian palace and so it had become something of a game of hit or miss when it came to getting alone time. pushing past the door to a secluded room heâd happened upon just a day prior, he quickly realized he was intruding. â my apologies, â waving the book in his own hand briefly, before glancing behind him at the door he had just entered. â i found it the other night, thought iâd turn into my get away, â he admitted, â looks as youâve beat me to it, â his eyes falling onto the book in the womanâs hand. âquite literally,â he chuckled. what were the odds.

âperhaps, i guess iâm just curious to know what isnât in the headlines. scandalous or otherwise. i know definitely want anyone to just think they know me based of what theyâve read.â as of late she did her best to stay away from the media coverage as best as she could, the deeper she delved into the depth of the web the more she wondered if the world even saw her as a real person. this was her life yet she sometimes almost felt detached from it. even when her title didnât bear nearly as great of a burden as his. âyes it certainly is.â though she doubted it could be any more beautiful for her than her own homeland, she suspected most of the other visitors would feel the same. âi understand what you mean, even if iâm a little closer to home than you are. as for settling in,â she pursed her lips against the lighter at the sight of his grin. âiâm trying not to get restless, i never could sit still. i miss my work as crazy as that may sound.â
â there is alot thatâs not in the headlines. â he confirmed. â against popular theory, i do not live in them, â he chuckled, it was true, despite the press somehow managing to etch his name into several articles on a daily basis a good portion were pulled out of thin air simply because the only stories that truly surfaced were quote unquote big. despite what many may thing big article worthy experiences didnât take place on a daily basis for anyone, even the king of england. â iâve become accustomed to the assumptions, â a slight shrug breaking his good posture for a moment as he glanced down at vittoria. â although, i am an open book, â he confessed, opening the floor for her to ask him anything, whether that be confirmation on a headline sheâd read or just a random detail on him. giving her a nod as his gaze stayed fixed on in front of them, noticing the pursing of her lips out of his peripheral, internalizing a chuckle at her reaction. â not crazy at all, â edward was still very much so on duty if you would but he wasnât partaking in the public appearances or meeting that often came with his title, instead his mother had taken on the reins and has been reporting back to him once in the mornings and once in the night through facetime.  Â

âi do not believe you nor i will find a spouse here unless weâre particularly keen on marrying each other.â he chuckled. âbut for anyone wishing to marry mignonette, itâs an all-out war. i almost feel bad for the girl.
chuckling along, he wiped his hand over his mouth as if to wipe aware the brief laughter exuding from him. â the most civil of wars -- a war nonetheless, â nodding along gabrielâs comment, â itâs a great pressure, i am sure, â he did feel for the young princess who was being courted by seemingly someone from each country. she was a hot ticket, all eyes would be on her in a form of this magnitude for truthfully the rest of her life.Â

âiâve always wondered about that. is really true, or just the perception?â she asked curiously looking up at him as they walked slowly, the conversation allowing her to not focus on the pain of her less than graceful hobbling, how glad she was there as no one with a camera around at that moment. âI definitely want to put that behind me and not think about it again.â even though her aching ankle would surely not allow that for at least a day or two. âso, how do you like genovia thus far?â
âare you asking me if i am secretly riddled with scandals, darling?â his voice was soft, as he led her through the now very familiar corridor. âalready forgotten,â he assured her, a warm smile gracing his face, very briefly. taking his gaze away from her for a moment as he thought about her question, âit is certainly beautiful here,â he replied. âitâs not quite home though,â he continued, despite edwardâs love for other cultures and their gorgeous sighting he was a english boy at heart. he was in every sense of the word in love with his country; he loved the energy, voices, sights, people. âi give myself a week before i become quite homesick.â of course no one would truly know whether he was feeling off or not, he would handle his homesickness in the most respectful and behind the curtain way. âas for you? how have you settled in?â making a point to give her a cheeky grin, as if to say aside from the last hour.

âwould all of england turn their noses up at the idea of you marrying a commoner? if not, that would widen the pool considerably.â gabriel had not thought often of his own marriage, but he didnât see it as much of an option for him, unless someone took pity on him. âbut letâs not talk of marriage. this isnât some matchmaking scheme.â
âi think it might be more of a matter of listening to those on the councilâs opinions apposed to the people,â he admitted. although he was sure all of england wouldnât be the most enthusiastic about a commoner becoming queen consort, it was much easier for edward to rationalize with them than those on the royal council back home. âis it not?â he questioned, a twinge of playful skepticism in his now arched brow.Â

â i suppose iâll have to work on my questioning skills. â rita responded, with a wry smile turning the corners of her mouth upwards. rita paused with a slight nod, eyes thoughtfully running over the boyâs face. this obviously wasnât an opportunity that presented itself everyday & rita KNEW she should ask some kind of profound question. and yet there was just one, tiny, nagging query dancing in the front of her mind. â my question still stands. â she finally responded, â why did you remember me? â it was a question she would never be able to answer by devouring literature, or running any number of elaborate equations - & THAT was precisely why she had to ask it.Â
âperhaps,â giving her a slight nod, agreeing with the lesson she had taken away from this. it was his turn to divulge whatever information the girl before him decided to ask, of course, within reason. his face said it all, he was waiting for the ball to drop. why did you remember me? giving a rather charming grin in response to her question to cover up the instant shot of relief he felt at her question. of all the questions she couldâve asked and that was the one she stuck with -- perhaps he couldnât quite judge that, after all, if she didnât ask him how else would she ever know the answer? âyour questioning skills may not be the best,â he teased, âduring my last visit to america , one of the staff praised a particular interns prowess,â he continued, his hands falling from across his chest to either of his sides, landing on the desk he was still leaned up against. âwhen i saw you and came to find you were the aforementioned intern, how could i not remember you?â the question was rhetorical and was more of a statement than anything. his gaze on her finally breaking as he glanced up, looking around aimlessly for a split moment really. âdid i answer that to your pleasure?â he asked, with a playful smirk creeping onto his face.Â

âoh god no, can you think of the headlines had that shoe dropped?â she asked shaking her head. news spread like wildfire in their world, and then it spiraled taking on a narrative of itâs own changing and bending until there was no truth left to the matter at hand. âexcept the whole swooning damsel thing is quite played out.â Â
âno,â he replied with an abrupt shake of his head, âi am the least scandalous person on this side of the hemisphere and iâd certainly like to maintain that,â he admitted, holding back the laughter that tempted to spill from his lips. despite his jovial disposition, his name meant alot to him, the fact that heâd been in the spotlight since birth and had managed to stay in the good graces of the media throughout it all was something to be proud of he felt. he surely didnât need to go off and ruin that at thirty-five. âif only the rest of the world knew that,â he, in his own way agreed with her.Â

âoh good.â she muttered glad they were headed closer than her wing which was much much further away and up a flight of stairs. she wanted to sit and try to figure out how bad her ankle was going to be. she looked up at his comment and laughed lightly. âyou know if it wasnât for our titles and the fact that our discovery couldâve caused a diplomatic incident that wouldâve been much funnier.â she said, more open to laughing at herself since they were in the clear. âthough I do have a great story about how the king of england had to rescue me from my shoe.â
âi figured the circumstances made it all the more funny,â he mused, with a cheeky wink before he brought his attention back to their surroundings for a moment. after all it was a bit darker given the time of night. âyou just lived a real life fairytale, i suppose,â he shook his head for a moment in a bit of disbelief on how clique they moments that just transpired were.Â

âokay,â she muttered though the concern didnât leave her face right away but he was right that they should make haste and move on from this place. stepping around him, with only the briefest of glances up as she brushed past him she pulled the door open slowly peeking her head out quickly to make sure there wasnât anyone there seeing them exiting. she waited a moment to be sure before she hobbled out of the entryway as gracefully as she could manage. âwhere did you ask your guard to meet us?â she asked looking up at him when he made his way out as well.
âjust outside of my room, itâs just a corridor or so away, i figured itâd be easiest.â he told her, his grip on her waist just tight enough to assure she didnât stumble to much. his eyes scanning the area as he began to lead the way. âa terrible influence you are, by the wayâ he teased, his voice just a tad bit louder than it had been whilst the two were in the closed off room. in an attempt to lighten to mood ever so slightly, he could tell she was stressed about everything that had just transpired and wanted her to just take a breather.

moving her ankle about to get a feel for just how bad it might be she was thankful for his grip as she bent down slight to take the heels off, the lose of the four inches doing wonders to making her feel a lot steadier, and relieve the pressure on the pained foot a bit. looking up at him once more she considered one thing was for certain she wasnât going to ask him to carry her as if the situation wasnât embarrassing enough. âIâm sure I can manage to walk with a bit of help.â she assured moving toward the door again grabbing a hold of his arm at her waist to steady herself a bit. though she noticed than the skin felt a bit jagged against her touch, she moved her hand looking down though the corridor wasnât lit the only illumination came from below but she couldnât see his arm that well âdid you hurt yourself?â she asked feeling even worse than she already did, recalling then how heâd pushed his arm through the tight space to keep the shoe from falling.Â
âokay,â he nodded relieved a bit for that response. although he was sure had to picked the latter he could easily carry her from corridor to corridor if they had run into anyone that way many more questioned would be presented to them. it was as if her mention of his arm was the switch flip on the pain in his arm kicking in. his brows narrowing slightly, âjust a few scratches, can barley notice them,â he attempted to brush off the topic. he was a big boy who had once been apart of the royal british army if he couldnât handle a couple scratches there were truly some problems, he thought to himself. âweâd better get a move on, though, or else weâd mine as well had just let the shoe drop,â he tried reminding her of the fact that they were now standing in the door frame of the secret passageway, that neither one had any business being in.

despite her unease, his words were comforting, his whole demeanor was really he was seemingly relaxed where she was buzzing with nerves. she exhaled nodding and reaching for a higher ledge on the wall to lift herself up higher to be able to better pull her foot through with his help. Fighting the numbness that had crept up her legs having been kneeling down in the same position for so long. Wobbly on her one foot she gripping his jacket tighter as she pulled up as he tried to bend the metal. Finally the foot dislodged throwing her off balance but there was hardly any room to really fall. closing her eyes she let out a sigh of relief, trying to settle her racing pulse. finally she opened her eyes to look at him, brushing her hair back and tugging down at her dress to right herself, sure she looked as frazzled as she felt. âthank you so much, i really donât know how bad this couldâve been had you not come along when you did.â she was still surprised heâd followed through the way he had. placing her foot down on the stone away from the metal grating she winced though the real pain came when she tried to take a step toward the door putting pressure on the foot along with being scraped up slightly ( no gushing blood thank god ), the skin was an agitated red and visibly swelling.Â
once she was free of the metal, edward couldnât help but to let out a sigh of relief. his hand snaking itâs way around vittoriaâs waist, in an attempt to keep her upright. âno need to thank me,â giving her a warm smile as he glanced down at what could only be a swelled ankle. âthere is no way youâre getting back to you wing like that,â he broke the news to her, arm still snaked around the girlâs waist, sure sheâd likely lose balance or succumb to the pain if he hadnât. letting out a unsatisfied groan as he pulled his phone from his pocket, making a call to one of his guards to meet himself and vittoria in a specific corridor, one much less suspicious if they were found than the current narrow one they stood in, like sitting ducks. hanging up he glanced at the girl beside him, âyou have two choices; walk through the pain and iâll help hold you up or i carry you,â a slight shrug breaking his almost perfect posture for a brief moment as he dusted off the knees of his trousers.Â

âis your cousin notâ?â he stopped himself from asking the question. gabriel was a terrible judge of sexual interest, often not knowing if someone is interested in him until well past when he should. âregardless, iâm sure youâll find someone with advantageous lands and titles. someone befitting a king.â
edwards brows perched upward as he cut himself off, if he wouldnât finish his question, edward would waste no time finishing it for him and certainly not answering it. instead he just gave the other a humored smirk. âif i were only concerned about that, iâd be a decade into marriage,â he commented plainly with a brief shake of his head. âaccording to most no one is truly befitting a king. perhaps aside from a crown princess - that leaves the pool rather dry.â he explained, in his own way trying to say that perhaps someone âgood enoughâ for a king wasnât necessarily what a king should only be seeking.

too focused on the predicament at hand to farther protest her reasoning she curled her toes and tiled her foot upward in her efforts to keep the shoe on. she glanced down at the room packed full of some of the most important individuals in genovia. and it dawned on her then that sheâd roped in someone who would face a lot more scrutiny than she would if discovered. in all her worries she hadnât heard or rather focused on a single word being uttered in the meeting below, but that would hardly matter. thus she couldnât find the will to laugh at his attempt at humor. âedwardâŚi mean your majesty maybe you should send for someone else to help me.â she offered to ease her conscious. she let out another sharp gasp her hand gripping onto his shoulder without much thought as he pushed her foot up and she made every effort to hoist herself up a bit so she could pull her foot through as well, ignoring the added pain at this point realizing the greater urgency of the situation.Â
âyour majesty,â he chuckled to himself. there was nothing all too royal about what was transpiring in this secret passage. edward bent down onto his knees in a narrow corridor with a duchesses foot in hand. âif i let go of your foot, your heel makes a rather loud and unwarranted entrance into that room,â he reminded her, his voice still barely audible. the last thing he needed was for the individuals below them to hear them or worse, hear him. although, even if the shoe hadnât been a factor he being him likely would still stick it out. edward had never been one for save his own ass; he simply wasnât set up that way, perhaps it was a quality that made him such a trusted king. âiâm going to get you out of this,â he promised, glancing down at her foot that he had surprisingly made quite some progress with despite her still being very much so stuck. putting a bit more pressure, he hoped he wasnât hurting her too much. like that, his eyes widened slightly, âjust pull a bit more, love, youâre nearly out,â he confirmed, a satisfied and encouraging smile gracing his features.Â
