Let’s get something clear about Pedigree Dogs Exposed, because a lot of people seem to think the wrong idea. The documentary is not against purebred dogs or breeding. The author of the blog and creator of the documentary, Jemima Harrison, is NOT against purebred dogs either. She loves all dogs and grew up with purebred and mixed breed dogs.
The documentary highlights important issues in canine welfare and health, focused on the fact that aesthetic selection has caused conformational extremes that are harmful to dogs, that profound inbreeding in has caused lack of genetic diversity in breeds, and that breed clubs and breeders have not done enough to help fix this huge issue.
I see a lot of people using PDE as an excuse to say all purebred dogs are unhealthy and anyone who wants to get a dog from a responsible breeder is the worst scum. But that’s not the case at all. Breeders who produce dogs with unhealthy deformities that don’t allow them to breathe, run around normally, mate and give birth on their own, and/or cause them to have decreased quality of life are the real problem. They don’t care about the health of their dogs and they should be confronted for their negligence. PDE promotes responsible breeders and dog owners, and supports those that are doing their best efforts to improve dogs’ lives, whether they’re purebred or mixes.

Revive this breed please

The Dalbo dog (or Dalbohund) is an extinct dog breed that was largely used to protect free roaming cows, sheep, horses and goats from wolves, brown bears and cattle thieves. It was also used to herd cattle, and as a protection/guard dog. It became extinct in around 1870. No dogs of this breed was found when an inventory was done in 1913. This dog breed was never common in Sweden, but it did occur in the following Swedish counties: Västergötland, Bohuslän, Dalsland, Värmland and the Norwegian county of Östfold. The extinction of the Dalbo dog is linked to the near whipe-out of wolves and bears in Scandinavia in around 1890. It was then considered to expensive continue to have very large dogs, that did not seem to fill a clear purpose. An ill-fated eruption of rabies in 1854, might have contributed to the downfall of the breed. (source)

First of all, saying that there’s no way is ignorant because there IS a way to fix it, if only people knew about it publicly and breed clubs embraced it.
These are called Retro Mops (website here), and they’re pugs bred specifically to be longer-legged, leaner, with smaller eyes, longer muzzles, and more open nostrils. And while the project is still a work in progress, it’s heading in the right direction.
Tumblr media
This new breed type started in Germany, and developed from the selective breeding of purebred pugs with longer muzzles and a longer legged frame.
From the website:
“We want to prove that a pug does not have to be short of breath and phlegmatic, but a very sporty and docile family and companion dog”
And there’s also a different strain of bulldog, which is a muscular and athletic tpe that can actually clean itself, mate, and give birth on its own (something that mainstream Bulldogs cannot do) (breeder here)
Tumblr media
This should be the goal of EVERY pug breeder and owner, to have a healthy dog that doesn’t struggle to breathe and walk.
I’m sure you’re a pug or bulldog lover, which is why you’re so eager to defend them, but you’re not helping these dogs out by ignoring the problems in the breed. This is not a “little problem”, it’s a HUGE issue that’s killing dogs, and it’s prefectly preventable if pugs were outcrossed to have longer muzzles and wider nostrils.
Just look at the difference and tell me you’re not horrified:
Tumblr media
As long as people stay blind to these issues, nothing will change. Which is why I’m saying this here so at least some people will see that there IS an alternative, and that wheezing pugs and bulldogs are not cute. When the public realizes the difference, the demand for these mutants will stop and more healthy, longer-lived alternatives will replace them.
But it starts with someone talking about them, and not just thinking there’s nothing to be done. Although if there were a time machine at my disposal you bet I’d use to pinch the nostrils of the original Victorian breeders and see how they like it.
