Kirigirisu is 10!

Firstly, sorry there is no Japanese on this. We’re in the middle of a very busy period at the moment and this is a bit too long to carefully translate. Hopefully an auto translation will do the job if you need it.

I was a little shocked to realise recently that Kirigirisu has been around for 10 years. I don’t have an exact date for when we decided to start the label but the first order we received was on May 19th 2014. It’s been up and down since then and it’s definitely become more difficult to sell physical items. But at the same time, I think that now a lot more people know about the label and we’re almost approaching some kind of happy balance.

Postal prices are getting worse and worse and the cost of the materials we use to make the releases are going up. But I’ve always wanted our releases to be affordable so I’m doing my best to keep the prices as they have always been. Sadly for some people this means that they are going to pay more for postage than they pay for the actual item. Of course there’s nothing we can do about this, so hopefully the eternally low prices of our stuff will make up for it in some way. And my tip is to buy in batches. Then you can save some money.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the label we have a few things arranged. Sadly the concert at the Budokan for which we were going to fly over all the artists who have ever released on the label has turned out to be not very cost-effective. Instead we have a compilation to offer you. I asked everyone who we’ve released if they would like to provide something for a digital compilation with all the profits going to charity. I was really delighted how many people said yes. Some of the names might seem unfamiliar as they are the new projects of people whose music we have released under a different name. I’m going to leave that as a puzzle for you to solve for yourself if you want to. The compilation is going to be massive and will be on Bandcamp as a pay what you want release, but I would strongly encourage you to donate something as the money will go to Doctors Without Borders. With this in mind, if you could buy on a Bandcamp Friday or do so directly by sending us an email, (we’ll send you a download code), we can make sure that as much of your money as possible goes to the good cause. Thank you so much to the artists who have provided their music. Currently, the compilation is slightly delayed as we are moving flat in the next few weeks. Not great timing for the Kirigirisu anniversary, but a good thing for us. I will publicise in all the usual places when it is up and available and will send a very short mailout too.

Along with the compilation, there is something else exciting happening now, around the proper anniversary. In order to use up some of the remaining parts we had from previous releases, we’ve made some ‘rogue’ versions of previously sold out releases. To distinguish them from the previous limited edition ones, they will all come in different colours, not only different from the original, but also from each other. So some of them look a little wild. Sometimes there is a little defect with the artwork, but only the smallest of things. You probably won’t even notice. In order to avoid masses of Bandcamp batch making, we are offering them outside of the site, but you will get a Bandcamp download code with the release. There are a few more that we could make, but I’m waiting for the approval from the artists. Will let you know if they say yes. All of these orders will be shipped after we’ve moved so around the start of June. And I’m sorry in advance if any of my responses are a bit delayed. The next few weeks are going to be very busy!


In addition to this, we had a lot of stickers and inserts left over from the Lorenzo Gomez Oviedo - Bardo Todol cassette which sold out a while ago. To use these up we’ve made some CD copies of the release. As you can see, they look a little bit different from our previous CDs and feature the tape’s sticker on the front and the original cassette’s insert inside a folded paper sleeve in our usual style. If these sell we can hopefully send some money to the artists. The initial run ended up selling out without covering the costs somehow. Guess I’m not the sharp businessman I thought. They are available on the Bandcamp now, but if you want to combine buying one of them with some of the rogues, let me know and we can do it together in one go to save on postage.

Kirigirisu : Please introduce yourself

Geeker Natsumi : Hello. My name is Geeker Natsumi. I’m from Hokkaido. People say I’m the ‘Dosanko Grimes’ . I am now based in Tokyo and in a band called Tokumeikibou and do solo music as Geeker Natsumi using Casiotone and a looper. I’m a singer/songwriter. Thank you!

K: Last year you released an album on Kirigirsu, I can never pronounce it properly, Heloctoro. Heloctoro is your second album isn’t it? The recording process was slightly different this time, wasn’t it?

GN: I also used GarageBand to record the last album. I used the mic on the computer to record this one but apart from that it’s not really different. But this time I used GarageBand on the iPhone.

K: Oh, the last song was Mexico Salamander from Heloctoro. Please go to the Kirigirisu Bandcamp page and please buy it. You do solo music and play in a band. What are the good and bad points of each of them?

GN: With my solo project I can do things whenever and wherever I want to. But I only have me ideas to use to make the music. The good thing about being in a band is being able to listen to the other members’ opinions and ideas.

K: Who are your influences for your music as Geeker Natsumi?

GN: There are various people. With regards to solo casiotone stuff, Hakamada Taku made me want to play casiotone. They play keyboards in Tomovsky’s backing band. When I saw the concert I thought it looked a lot of fun and thought I should do it. Also Cibo Matto, and Mouse On Mars. Recently pop acts like Superorganism and Kero Kero Bonito. And Denki Groove.

K: Nice link the next song is Geeeker Natsumi’s selection. what is it?

GN: Kero Kero Bonito’s ‘Only Acting.’

K: Are they British?

GN: I think they are American. The vocalist is mixed-race American and Japanese I think.

K: I thought I heard English pronunciation, but maybe I’m wrong.

GN: Oh, they are an internet band so maybe come from various countries.

K: Recently you haven’t been able to really play concerts, so you have started performing on Twitch. On your Twitch programs, are the visuals important?

GN: The visuals are important for me. People can enjoy watching the visuals as well as the music. Recently I bought a green screen and am using it on Twitch.

K: I saw it, with the nodding cat! Is the visual element also important for your concerts?

GN: Yes, I have light-up earrings and an LED hair-band, and I am also using visual backgrounds.

K: Next month you’re doing a concert. please tell us about it.

GN: I have organized an event at Otsuka Meets as part of their 13th anniversary celebration month. The event is called Universal Seimei Tai 2’ and I am playing along with Haruko Tajima and Tinkerbell Hatsuno. It’s a great line-up so please come!

K: Are you making a new album or any new music at the moment?

GN: Yes, at the moment I’m making an album based on animal noises. I’ve made quite a few songs already with samples of cats, dogs, horses, birds, elephants and guinea pigs. When I have a few more songs I want to release it.
