Nanashima and Shinomiya (7x4/4x7): The Real BL Couple of Kiss Him, Not Me

Since the manga ended a couple of months ago and there has yet to be a 2nd season, I was exhilarated by the news of Junko penning another special chapter dedicated to Nanashima and Shinomiya’s reunion mid-timeskip. Now that the chapter is out and they have officially become canon, I’ve taken the liberty of re-reading the manga to take note of the goodies Junko provided for us.

NOTE: This is not meant to invalidate the other relationships in the series! We all have our preferences when it comes to pairings, and it’s fun to pick apart and identify what we love about them! So if this ship is not your thing and you are more inclined toward other ships, feel free to ignore and scroll past, simple as that! <3 But in case you’re interested, hell yeah :) 

Keep in mind though that this is only my personal opinion and in no way am I stating that what I say is canon or completely accurate so if you disagree, that’s totally fine! Everyone has different interpretations of a series and its characters. But any aggressive comments against my POV will be promptly blocked.

WARNING: Contains manga spoilers past Chapter 29! And blatant signs that I am just reading too much into shit. Also use of TV Tropes logic.

Nanashino may not be the deepest relationship in the series as most of their scenes together are for comedic effect but they have some cute behind-the-scenes interactions worth looking into a second time.

Keep in mind that this will not be 100% objective as it is Nanashino-centric for the most part but I do hope the points as to why Nana and Shino work for me as a couple come across.

The Anime!

One of the things that I loved about the anime was how faithful it was to the original manga! While there are many great stories that come from going in a different direction than the source material, I am really glad that they decided to follow the manga!

I’ve seen a post going around singing the praises of the manga series “Kiss Him Not Me” (aka:  Watashi ga Motete Dousunda), and while I adore this manga and I think it’s hilarious and even has a great ouji lesbian character (my fave kind of manga character lbr), I want to warn anyone who is thinking about reading it that it has some harsh views on body image, losing weight to be beautiful, and other similar content that has the potential to really fuck you up if you have issues with body image and/or disordered eating.

The manga does joke about how the main character gains and loses impossible amounts of weight in a handful of days, so it is certainly done for comedic effect. And a few chapters into the story, the love interest boys decide that they love the female protag no matter what weight she is. (The ouji lesbian character doesn’t even care at all; like, she doesn’t struggle coming to terms with the female protag’s weight fluctuations and instead fully supports her and loves her, it’s beautiful and I’m cry.) But yeah, I just wanted to let y’all know. If these are things you struggle with, enter this manga with caution.

I, personally, have suffered from disordered eating and was able to read this manga no problem, and if you think you can get through it, please do! It’s really funny and sweet and I love the art style. (And if you do start reading it, please let me know and we can chat bc I love this manga.)

This makes me so happy because so many people think only Mutsumi started liking her for her personality and not her looks which is definitely not the case. I have more explanation and examples of why this is false in the link below

I’m actually so glad that Serinuma gained weight again, she’s so cute when she got just a tad chubbier cheeks! But it makes everyone, except Mutsumiya and Nishina, act like such assholes! Unbelieveable!

A thought

It bothers me so much when people say that Mutsumi is the only one who doesn’t care about Kae’s appearance. As seen in Chapter 24, NISHINA first liked Kae when she did the “flying body attack” and sent her really nice fan mail (aka before she lost weight). She even had trouble finding her later when she HAD lost weight, because the crush had developed before that had happened. People seem to latch onto when she tells Igarashi that she likes cute and beautiful things as “proof” that she only likes appearances, but guys, she called Kae cute when she did the flying body attack which means that she has always found her cute. She was also the only one to outwardly say that she liked that Kae gained weight because she could make her nice food and that it was cute that “she looked like a pinecone (Mutsumi didn’t bash Kae for gaining weight like Nana and Shinomiya, but he didn’t outright support it either). No one else said that Kae shouldn’t push herself while exercising because she had gotten hurt. Nana and Shinomiya just wanted her to lose weight for her appearance and while Mutsumi and Igarashi didn’t really care about Kae’s weight at that time, they also didn’t step in to defend her either. Basically what I’m trying to say is I respect people who ship Mutsumi and Kae, but I don’t like it when people act like he’s the only one who started liking Kae for her personality and not her looks, because that is SO NOT TRUE
