Ever Since I Was Born: Eren and his Id

Ironically, after writing a very long critique of the ending, I believe I have found a way to redeem it. Isayama’s comments on the manga ‘Himeanole’, as well as the analyses put forward by @twilight-paradise88 and @cosmicjoke​, led me down a very interesting path of interpretation that makes the ending - thematically, at least - justified.

In the 2017 Bessatsu Shonen interview, Isayama says this about ‘Himeanole’:

Ultimately, I don’t think the series [SNK] passes judgment on what is “right” or “wrong.” For example, when I read Furuya Minoru’s “Himeanole,” I knew society would consider the serial killer in the story unforgivable under social norms. But when I took into account his life and background I still wondered, “If this was his nature, then who is to blame…?” I even thought, “Is it merely coincidence that I wasn’t born as a murderer?”

Does this sound familiar?

Eren, like the protagonist of that manga, is presented as being a certain way since birth. From the Attack Titan’s power to see the future, we know that Eren bringing about the Rumbling was an inevitability.

The kernel of this idea is preserved in the ending. Although Eren’s motivations become more complex, the core of his being still compels him towards that act of destruction. He cannot understand it, because it is not a logical demand. It is simply the nature of who he is.

Hi! You know when it comes to Eren and Armin and their relationship it always involves with them reaching out for one another, holding hands or looking at each others eyes and it's really nice. I feel like I may be the only one seeing that but yeah.

Would you still call aot a masterpiece? What is the message of this story really? Armin thanks eren for becoming the villain ( thanking for genocide) ?

I don't know if this was sent before the official scan came out, but I have never called AoT a masterpiece. I love the story, but I hate this kind of discourse.

In fact, I hate this kind of internet culture.

It's inane and reductive and encourages zero substantial discussion.

I also suspected this horrid reading would happen and wish people would learn to read.

He didn't thank him for the genocide.

He literally says it was an error.

It was wrong.

What it IS saying is that Armin wants to make the best out of the circumstances Eren pushed on them.

What it IS saying is that Armin and everyone else want to make sure these sacrifices end up having meaning and lead to something better, something the Survey Corps always have been fighting for. It says peace should be the ultimate solution and is worth fighting for.

It's like the stupid take that Erwin's charge was about telling everyone how cruel the world is despite him literally saying he was fighting *against* this cruel world.

People just take half a line and see nothing else after it and it frustrates me to no end.

i don't understand eren, ok I admit it. it's so hard to really understand his character. he has soft and gentle side but in the other hand he's just like some edgy creepy kid? idk. so can you describe eren or even write an analysis about his character? thank you.

Well, I’m not gonna sit here and say I know Eren 100% either cuz I’m not Isayama. And nothing is set in stone till we reach the final panel of this manga, in other words, I know full well that 9 out of 10 times I could be wrong about my presumptions of him. 

Anyway, I’m no meta writer, so I’m just gonna say what I think I understand as of now and keep it short.

Eren hasn’t changed drastically like so many people think, if you pay close enough attention to his true character. Naturally, he matured (within a couple of months pre-time skip technically) and he grew, and his attitude and methods changed, but not his core beliefs, as I’ve said before. What did change was his focus, before it was the titans and now it’s the world, and Eren is doing what he’s always done, seek freedom and destroy whatever was in his way from attaining it. And that aspect of Eren is what makes him scary. He already said so himself. 

And so did Levi.

Honestly, his actions shouldn’t be that much of a shocker. We should’ve seen this coming, but it’s easy for the audience to be surprised because we’re too used to seeing Eren kill titans and not innocent people. 

I don’t think he should be painted as an overall evil character either though, everyone is morally grey in this story. Eren does have humanity, and people often forget that during the 4-year time skip, he desperately tried to look for another way and have some faith in the sc in hopes of hearing better news.

You can clearly see the frustration, disappointment and sadness in his face whenever he’s realizing more and more that the future he saw is inevitable and that he’s gonna be given no choice but to resort to the rumbling. Which is why his anger during the scene in chapter 107 makes all the sense now, even then, when he was dead set on his goals, he was still open to an alternative. He even stopped and considered the euthanization plan because of his immense guilt, he recognizes how ghastly the rumbling is, but most people want to look at this as him crying crocodile tears lol so I don’t know what to say. 

Eren is literally cornered right now, and he’s the only one who can really take action. And sorry but, Marley went from constant pushing for decades, to shove, and Eren can only take so much bs, so he snapped (not to mention, Marley and the rest of the world were more interested in Eldia’s resources that’ll make them rich than anything else). It’s either the world or his people/freedom, and knowing Eren, he truly is a monster who won’t submit. Now, you’re probably wondering if this’ll make me flip a bitch and cancel Eren just bc half the fandom is, no. Not any time soon. He’s a geniusly written character and I love him too much (I say for the umpteenth time). I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s going to be hated as a whole no matter what, pre or post time skip, he’s definitely won an award of being one of the most loathed characters in the series lol. 

So yeah, of course, in the long run, this is simply my opinion and you don’t have to agree with me but there’s my answer. However, I’m not jumping to conclusions either, there’s no telling what Eren will do (if he wakes up) and what’s to come with these remaining chapters. Just keep reading.
