Millennials + Your Marketing Strategy.
Millennials are people who are born after 1981... extremely important population to target in TH but also worldwide.
https://retail.emarketer.com/article/five-things-keep-mind-about-millennial-shoppers-2018/5a3c5282ebd40008a852a260?ecid=NL1014
Coupons
"If there’s a coupon out there, millennials will find it. And discounts definitely impact the way they shop. November 2017 data from CouponFollow found that more than eight in 10 millennials surveyed said they used coupon codes when shopping online"
Shopping Online
"A study from food industry firm Food Marketing Institute (FMI) reveals that out of all age groups, millennials are most willing to use online-only stores for their grocery needs. More than four in 10 millennials said they shopped this way at least occasionally—that’s a rate almost 80% higher than in 2015."

Samsung Supports Beacons For Android Devices
News from the Beacon World!
Samsung is about to launch the Samsung Placedge Platform featuring new Beacon solutions for Android.
‘The Samsung Proximity Partnership Program provides an opportunity for partners to configure and deploy an effective location-based marketing campaign. Samsung would like to support you to make a successful story All you need to do is to register to our proximity service partnership program, and then we will provide the full end-to-end solution.  In order to get started, join the Proximity Service’s Web Console with Samsung account. We will verify your account and give you a company code, and you will be ready to go!”
What is interesting is that you do not need any app for this… “Samsung has decided to supplement the app layer by building its own. Sitting on the level of the phone, it provides retailers and brands direct access to consumers and provides a suite of campaign, push message and coupon delivery tools.”
Let's see how this Samsung Beacon solution will be implemented in the near future (we sincerely hope it will work better than the Samsung Wallet).
With Apple Passbook + iBeacon, to design a solution based on iBeacon is very simple and works very well.

Apple protects user from geolocation marketing...
... but not from its own geolocation marketing tools (iBeacons, etc)
Tumblr media
Systems which used to collected unique mac address of the users smartphones using free Wifi network will  not be able to do so anymore.
Some shopping centres in UK are proposing free wi-fi and are collecting smartphones unique MAC addresses to track users and shoppers habits.
They know if the users previously came in the area, list the shops that the users prefer and offer targeted advertising.
As we learned in WWDC, Apple will generate temporary MAC address for the devices using iOS 8 and therefore this will prevent companies from spying on you.
Of course this does not apply to Apple geolocation marketing tools iBeacon, Passbook, etc
You may find more details about this in a recent article from Quartz
“In shopping malls, for instance, a firm called Euclid Analytics collects, in its own words, “the presence of the device, its signal strength, its manufacturer (Apple, Samsung, etc.), and a unique identifier known as its Media Access Control (MAC) address.” In London last year, one start-up installed a dozen recycling bins that sniffed MAC addresses from passers-by, effectively tracking people through the area via their phones. Such companies go to great lengths to explain that such information in not personally identifiable—except that repeated studies have shown that this data can indeed be used to infer a great deal about your life.”

Go Deeper With iBeacons & Smartphone indoor Positioning
Tumblr media
Just found this very interesting article from 2013. See below the abstract.
“Modern smartphones are a great platform for Location Based Services (LBS). While outdoor LBS for smartphones has proven to be very successful, indoor LBS for smartphones has not yet fully developed due to the lack of an accurate positioning technology. In this paper we present an accurate indoor positioning approach for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphones that uses the innate ability of mobile phones to produce ultrasound, combined with Time-Difference-of-Arrival (TDOA) asynchronous trilateration. We evaluate our indoor positioning approach by describing its strengths and weaknesses, and determine its absolute accuracy. This is accomplished through a range of experiments that involve variables such as position of control point microphones, position of phone within the room, direction speaker is facing and presence of user in the signal path. Test results show that our Lok8 (locate) mobile positioning system can achieve accuracies better than 10 cm in a real-world environment.”

iBeacon + WWDC 2014 = Secret Function?
Tumblr media
Interesting article from Apple Insider where they discovered a curious behaviour at proximity of some Apple or Starbucks Beacons...
“The screenshots above were taken in a New York Apple Store from an iPhone with iOS location services turned on. When we neared the store, a small transparent Apple Store app icon appeared in the bottom left corner of the lock screen, directly opposite the Camera access slider. Swiping up on the icon caused our device to freeze, though the fact that the asset is there shows Apple is working on something quite novel. “
and
“From the looks of it, Apple is leveraging iBeacon technology to send out generic pings to iPhones that invoke a target app to be displayed when in relatively close proximity to a beacon device. The system was less flexible in iOS 7 as users had the option to receive notifications via alert screens, or nothing at all.”

Apple's Latest Offering Explores the Great Indoors
Tumblr media
Interesting Story from WSJ about WWDC 2014...
"Apple is expected to reveal more iBeacon plans at its World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco starting Monday, where it also intends to preview new versions of its iOS mobile-operating system and Mac OSX software. To promote iBeacon, Apple will place beacons throughout Moscone Center and offer sessions for developers on how to implement the technology."

This is a working iBeacon
I just received a working iBeacon... it is transmitting a simple UUID linked to a Pass that will show an alert on user phones if they are near the iBeacon.
The range is up to 50m and this little piece of hardware has a huge potential.
We will use these iBeacons on a big scale very soon. Stay tuned :)

iBeacon for Everyone
Tumblr media
As I am waiting for some shipments of beacons, I was looking for apps able to transmit beacon signals and found two for Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9).
If you are not familiar with iBeacons yet, I invite you to read what is iBeacon or an excellent article from Pocket-Lint: Apple's iBeacons explained: What it is and why it matters.
Below is my selection of useful apps regarding iBeacons.
How to turn Mac into iBeacon (FREE)
"A tiny app to turn a Bluetooth LE-equipped Mac into an iBeacon."
MacBeacon for OSX
"With the MacBeacon app you can turn any Macintosh computer that is running OS X® 10.9 or higher and is equipped with built-in or third party Bluetooth 4.0 into your own, fully-configurable iBeacon."
Alternatively, I found 2 apps acting as beacons but of course you would need 2 phones.
Tumblr media
Estimote Virtual Beacon This app can show demo from Estimote beacon products and act as beacon but unfortunately you cannot customise your beacon.
Tumblr media
Locate IB You can setup your beacon UUID Major ID and Minor ID with this one.
Tumblr media
Finally I found some interesting article iBeacons: Can My iOS App Find Beacons That Aren’t Mine?
Do you have some advices regarding good iBeacon apps?
Let me know! [email protected]

Apple Stores are using iBeacon to boost sales
Tumblr media
Another interesting article from 9to5Mac regarding iBeacon...
"Apple is said to have begun stocking up on iBeacon transmitters, and the company, in the next few days, will begin installing these sensors in many Apple Stores across the United States.
These transmitters will be placed on the tables that house Apple products in addition to store shelves holding accessories. The technology will serve as a way to both improve the Apple shopping experience, and in-turn, boost product sales.
The sources say that the technology will be used in tandem with an upcoming update to the Apple Store iPhone app. The service will allow a customer to walk up to a product and then receive a notification on their iPhone with additional information such as pricing and features."
