Ok so it seems like the bulk of minecraft technical skills can be sorted into five Big Categories, which can then be applied for worldbuilding purposes:

Survivalism: this is stuff like knowing how to find and get resources, how to craft items, what all the mobs are and how to fight them, etc. Just a good working knowledge of the core mechanics of survival minecraft, including basic resource farms. The extreme of this is hardcore players like Philza.

Building: if you can design and build a beautiful base without following a step-by-step tutorial, this one is for you. This is also where most major endurance projects go, like draining a monument, terraforming a mountain, etc. This is Grian, along with many other hermits.

Redstone: basically binary coding, scaled up to however high your expertise can take you. Minecraft is turing complete, which makes redstoning a complete skill in itself. IMO most automated farms go here as well even if they use minimal redstone, along with structures like world eaters and lag machines because they rely so heavily on technical mechanics. Think MumboJumbo.

PvP: the ability to fight and win against other players, rather than just against mobs. Includes physical skills like good aim and high click speed. Also includes understanding the fine details of specialized battle mechanics like armor, shields, potions, healing items, and end crystals. Technoblade is a good example of this.

Movement: the ability to get from one place to another quickly, using whatever means possible. Includes parkour, elytra use, water bucket clutches, speedbridging, etc. I would also argue it includes speedrunning techniques like making nether portals with a bucket and triangulating end fortresses. Dream is this.

Anyway, if we're layering the usual minecraft low fantasy/cold war military/dystopian aesthetic over this, these categories could translate to professions and lifestyles such as:

Survivalism -> terrain guides/explorers, artisans, farmers, naturalists, homesteaders. People who contribute to their community's ability to be self sufficient, likely drawn to small settlements or solitary nomadic lifestyles.

Building -> architects, landscapers, infrastructure designers, construction workers. Probably involved in largescale projects with varying degrees of authority, most likely found working in a major city or for a wealthy patron.

Redstone -> research scientists, engineers of various subspecialties, mechanics, industry specialists. Might work alone but more likely on teams within larger operations. May or may not have scruples about how their work gets used.

PvP -> soldiers, mercenaries, gladiators, bodyguards, strategists. Societal role will depend on career path, ranging from captive in a fighting arena to high-ranking general. Relationships with others will vary accordingly.

Movement -> scouts, messengers/couriers, assassins, spies, bounty hunters. Very likely to operate alone or on small teams because other people tend to slow them down. Has potential to overlap heavily with PvP or survival lifestyles.

Here’s a concept: Natural-born avians don’t exist. 

All avians were born without wings or feathers or annoying birdbrain instincts. They all used to be human, or something similar. And then something happened that caused them to Fledge. 

All avians are connected to death, or chaos, or catastrophe. 

Philza is one of the greatest hardcore players ever. He’s so renowned that he claims the plainspeak name of the universe as his own: Philza Minecraft. (For someone so good at living, dying must have felt like the end of the world.)   He’s successfully courted Lady Death herself. His wings are the color of the dragons he’s fought over and over again, and the endless expanse of the void. His wings are the same shifting shades of inky darkness as the shimmering folds of Death’s dress. 

Grian is… a bit of an enigma. He vanished from his old server (he was kidnapped, or so the rumors say) and when he resurfaced it was with brightly-colored wings sprouting from his back. He doesn’t fear death (look at the games he plays) and he’s an agent of chaos. His feathers make sense, even if no one can pin down exactly when and why he Fledged. 

TommyInnit doesn’t have wings, not yet, but’s close. There’s feathers in his hair (white, for the innocence of youth long since stolen) and his dreams are filled with clouds and starlight. He has died and come back. He is at a tipping point. He might Fledge. He might not. Only time will tell. 

Scott Smajor is luckier than most, or else he’s something entirely new. How many people win a game of death and take snowy white owl’s wings as their prize? (Owls aren’t known for their loyalty. Perhaps they should be.) But that is another world, another time, and although Smajor has always been different, perhaps this is too different. 

Jimmy’s Fledging has been imminent for a long time now. He’s always at the forefront of disaster, an unwitting herald of swiftly approaching doom. One more world-ending disaster is all it takes, and the next time he awakes there’s golden feathers in his bed and wings the color of sunlight swelling beneath his skin. (Sing, poor canary, and don’t you dare stop.)

Okay i NEEEED to rant about Pogtopia because I know it was a ravine and shit but I need people to consider: lava caves

(all photos taken by me cause I explored one the other day and that’s where I got this idea)

Lava caves or lava tubes are HUGE super long caves that were carved out by literal lava flows and now just sit there and they’re cool as fuck

they’re cold as shit and the roof can vary from being dozens of feet above your head to being so low you have to crouch

there’s piles of rocks and ice formations and sand gardens and they are PITCH BLACK if you don’t have any lights and they paths can be crazy wide or super narrow and the ground is full of drop offs

ones that are made for people to explore have railings and stairs in certain places too and some even have built in lights or like the one I explored let you rent a flashlight

also a fun sidenote the ground is super hard packed sand full of holes from water dripping and it’s so hard packed that you don’t leave footprints (this would not help with Wilbur’s derealization)

anyways I think this would all work SUPER well for pogtopia cause cold/dark/shifting atmosphere/adding railings and pathways is already a thing in pogtopia

last year, i ran a survey to gauge tumblr's headcanons of the dream smp characters' species, and have decided to turn it into an annual thing! as always, here is the full powerpoint + the full data spread, for anyone who wants to look through them! thank you all for your continued participation, and i hope to see you again next year for round three!

if I didn’t know for a Fact that wilbur’s arc is closing up and none of the loose threads dangling, new and old, are getting closed after whatever we get next I’d genuinely be on copium about the niki and wilbur stream not mentioning a single thing about niki’s villain arc (about doomsday, about trying to kill tommy, about helping free dream from jail).

this would’ve been a problem with their reconciliation no matter when it happened, but having it Now genuinely feels like set up (for a swing that’ll likely never come).

it’s been months since c!wilbur’s last stream of course, but the last time we saw him it was wilbur learning about dream’s abuse of tommy in exile (being the First Person to learn the details of what happened in exile, holding nothing back. putting the physical abuse into words, putting tommy’s mental anguish into words), and absolutely Despising dream.

throughout the breakout stream niki made it clear that she didn’t think it was a good idea to let dream out, but she participated anyways because she felt like she was Supposed to. jack even confronted her about it, confronted her about how she’d dropped Their relationship in favor of her relationship with the syndicate even.

and Now you have niki and wilbur making up, without mentioning any of it. it feels like the set up for Real character drama, where niki finally processes that being in the syndicate was Hurting the people she cared about and she’s able to move forwards.

hell, we could’ve had Tommy there, had jack there, had Dream there. it could’ve been a whole thing. it could’ve been an Event that genuinely digs into niki’s psychology and gives this arc in her narrative a proper conclusion and send off after it’s been building since Season 2.

but, obviously, that wouldn’t work for the last Wilbur stream. so I’m not holding out hope.

The vast majority of Scar's deaths on Hermitcraft (and his death on 100 hours) are caused by Scar struggling to land safely with an elytra.

If the traffic life series gave everyone elytras, Scar would be out long before Jimmy.
