Brett: The amount of money we wasted, really, let's face it, fiddling with stuff
Mat: We were much much better ping pong players by the end of that album
Simon: (giggling) yeah
Neil: Pool hustlers
Mat: Exactly, yeah, we could have hustled pool for a living

Interviewer: What is Neil doing now?
Brett: Now? Maybe he’s sleeping.
Interviewer: Not in this moment, in present day.
Brett: Now? Do you want me to call him? Let him awake!
Interviewer: I just heard Neil composed music for a movie.
Brett: He has the studio in his house, and it’s close to my house. He seems to write music still. He writes music by using loads of computers & samplers and following manuals. Whenever I go to his house, many manuals are scattered in his house.
Mat: Neil’s house is kind of strange. I’ve never seen any house like his that has loads of books except libraries.
Brett: There’re ten thousand of books or records in his house and there’re many music materials, but there’s no chair! I have to stand when I read those!
Mat: He’s eccentric. He’s really a little bit strange.

there is an interview of Neil on p3;
Interviewer:Welcome to Japan!
Neil:Thank you. I’m in the fog of a jet-lagged mind, though. Before came to Japan, I went to Denmark’s festival and Germany. I appeared on TV, too. We just try to introduce new Suede. We just finished our new album.
Interviewer:Didn’t you get nervous when you suddenly did a gig at festival in front of many audiences?
Neil: Of course. There were loads of people so I got nervous(laughs). But I get excited now. It’s really strange… Once I get used to it, I don’t feel any afflictions anymore and I begin to feel it’s lovely. Now I’m OK if there’re many audiences.
Interviewer:You’re a cousin of Simon and as compared to Richard who replaces a big member Bernard, I think you didn’t feel so much pressure to join Suede but how was it in reality?
Neil:Yeah, there was not so much pressure. Richard started to play right after his join, but in my case, I took part from the recording of the album, so I spun out of making music that we wanted to make, and I didn’t have any spare time for thinking other things. If there were any pressure, that was the pressure for whether I could make music as I had expected, not the pressure from others around me.
By the way, I met our Japanese fan already. We just arrived here yesterday but there were many fans in the hotel we’re staying. They already knew me!(looks delighted) Although this is my first time to come to Japan. I hope new album will be out soon… I want everyone to hear our album.
Interviewer:I heard you already wrote ‘GBH’ and ‘Tiswas’ for Suede.
Neil:Yes. Those songs are ‘Starcrazy’ and ‘Chemistry Between Us’. This band is democratic so there is no different between them and me. So I expressed opinions without constraint.
Interviewer:When I think about Suede, I always have an impression that Suede is the band for Brett Anderson.
Neil:There is no change on the band itself. Well, the atmosphere of the band has  changed as compared to the past. Suede’s atmosphere is kind of very happy now. When we make the album, each member has the thought to write good songs so in that way this band might change. This change isn’t anything intended but it’s very natural. Now Suede only has music, and we enjoy that situation. I’m not sure if that situation has appeared, but this album is very pop, right? Anyway relations between us are good and I think it’s really good thing. Now I itch with the desire to finish tours and make recording for new album.
Interviewer:I heard you studied drama at the university before. Do you want to be an actor even now?
Neil:No, now the music is the only thing of importance for me. The reason why I learned the drama is to communicate with people. Both acting and doing music’s purposes are to tell something to the audience. In the sense that  to communicate with people I don’t give up acting, but the thought that I want to tell something through the music is bigger now.
Interviewer: When did you start playing the piano? What was the cue?
Neil:I love to make sounds since I was a child, and I dabble at many instruments. The thing what is important for me is music itself and as I say too far, I don’t care what instrument I would use. Among them the reason why i choose the piano especially is the piano can try loads of things.
Interviewer:Brett says about you that you’re ‘Suede Person’, and what do you think of the meaning of ‘Suede Person’? I got the impression that ‘Suede Person’ loves music, and they’re stylish and little bit snob.
Neil:The most important thing is, of course music. It’s distinct from wearing particular clothes to be called ‘Suede Person’. Maybe outer thing is an impression of  a glance. I choose the music for the way of expressing myself,  but it may be the reason. …I think if you decide ‘I’m a Suede Person from today’, you cannot be ‘Suede Person’.
Interviewer:I want to know about you more, and are there any things we must know about Neil Codling?
Neil:Something you must know about me!? Well…it’s a difficult question…I don’t know…anyway, keep your eyes peeled on me.(laughs) And you’ll understand me more. Well, please listen to our music more and more. As I said, I do the music to communicate with people so if you listen to our music, you can understand us more. There may be the language barrier but pop music is the amazing media that transcends all. Only to listen to a 3 minutes song that is playing from a stereo make big effect on us. If you don’t know the language, you can love music. I myself have big effect from music so I know that the music is really great.
(if there’s any grammar mistakes, please forgive me)

Suede : My Record collection (interview with Neil, Richard and Brett)
By Signe Elin Gram/WiMP Denmark
As one of the main acts of the mid-90’s britpop movement in the UK, Suede conquered the charts with emotional, glam rock-inspired hits such as «Trash», «Beautiful Ones» and «Animal Nitrate». Now, after an 11-year-album break they have reunited and are back with a brand new album called Bloodsports. An album that radiates with confidence and that decadent, melodramatic charm that has always defined the London five-piece.
We had the pleasure of meeting lead singer Brett Anderson, keyboard player and guitarist Neil Codling and guitarist Richard Oakes on a snowy, wintery day in Copenhagen to a conversation about the songs that changed that changed their lives.
Despite the cold weather and very early television performances, our early afternoon talk with the re-emerged band gave rise to several anecdotes about the band’s musical memories and preferences. Did you know that Brett Anderson prefers to drive to classical music and that punk music supposedly heals a broken heart?
The soundtrack of Suede takes you all the way from the three band members childhood memories to their current musical favourites.
- The first song you fell in love with?
The Beatles – Hey Bulldog
Richard: «It was the song ‘Hey Bulldog’. My parents had this Beatles compilation. As soon as I was old enough to put the record on I would play that on and on, I probably scratched it to death but yeah… there was something really good about that. It was really snidey. Very John Lennon. I think it was when I was about five, I thought it was so cool.»
What’s the best song to listen to in the car or when you’re on the road?
AC/DC – Highway to Hell Neu! – Hallogallo Händel – Hallelujah
Neil: «Highway to Hell’ by AC/DC». Richard: «There’s a Neu! track called ‘Hallogallo’, which is the best driving music I’ve ever heard. It’s got one of those motoric drumbeats that all krautrock has. Just ding-ding-cha-cha-ding-ding-cha-cha.» Neil: «For about two hours». Richard: «Yeah. It’s brilliant. Really gets me into that rhythm. Especially driving at night.» Neil: «We (Brett and I, red.) don’t actually drive. He’s (Richard, red.) the only driver. It’s a bit ironic at times.» Richard: «What do you like driving to, Brett?» Brett: «Oh God. I quite like driving to classical music, actually. Yeah, something quite mechanical. Almost like Vivaldi or something like that. That’s quite nice.» Neil: «Baroque. Baroque’n’roll.» Brett: «Yeah, nothing that’s too dynamic. Nothing like Tchaikovsky or something like that. More something like Händel.» Neil: «Baroque. Not late romantic.» Brett: «Yeah… I’m not like a huge classical music fan, but sometimes driving is like… when I first learned to drive, I couldn’t drive with anything with words or drum beat in it. I found out I could only drive to classical music.»
- What’s the best live song you’ve ever experienced?
The Cult – She Sells Sanctuary The Decemberists – The Rake Song The Arcade Fire – Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)
Brett: «I went to see The Cult, actually. I think they’re just amazing. They used to be amazing live. They’re the best live band I’ve ever seen. ’She Sells Sanctuary’ by The Cult in their heyday. I thought Ian Astbury was just an amazing front man. It’s kind of weird, because I’m not the world’s biggest The Cult fan. I do really love them, but live they just had a real presence.» Richard: «The best gig I’ve been to in years was when I went to see The Decemberists performing. They played the whole album, actually, their latest album. It’s called ‘The Hazards of Love’ and it’s like a concept album. But it’s almost like a continuous piece of music where all of these musicians come on and go of. That was just an amazing show, brilliant. I loved every bit of it.» Brett: «I don’t think I’ve ever heard The Decemberists. What do they sound like?» Richard: «I don’t know. They’re quite sort of folky in places. But yeah, that was one of my favorite gigs, it was just well put together. And the first time I saw The Arcade Fire was really good too. It was like mindblowingly good.»
- Is there a song that you wish you wrote? Interpol – NYC Pink Floyd – Great Gig in the Sky
Brett: «Oh God, there’s so many, isn’t there? ‘NYC’ by Interpol. It’s pretty great. It’s not really a song-song, is it? It’s just such a moving kind of thing. I love that.» Neil: «Great Gig in the Sky, I wish I’d written that.» Richard: «That’s not a song, that’s somebody waving.» Neil: «Somebody waving, yeah. It’s a beautiful piece of music. I wish I’d written that. I’ll always try to rip that off.» Brett: «You will, you will.»
- Is there a song that reminds you of your childhood? Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights Caravan – In the Land Of Pink & Grey
Brett: «Kate Bush. The stuff from ‘The Kick Inside’. My sister used to play that when it first came out. It was one of the first records she bought. When was that, 1978 or something? It reminds me of being 11.» Richard: «Stuff that my parents used to listen to. Caravan. Things like that. Bands from the 70’s. That was the soundtrack of my youth. Kind of parsh, English prog from the 70’s.»
- What’s the best song to accompany a broken heart? Crass – Do They Owe Us a Living
Brett: «I think something angry is quite good for that sort of thing. I’d go for Crass – ‘Do They Owe Us a Living’.» Neil: (laughs) «Yeah, brilliant.» Brett: «It’ll get your anger out.» Brett: «It’s just.. it’s healing, isn’t it? It sort of sets the mode.» Neil: «Redirects your energy.» Brett: «It’s a pillow and you can pretend it’s someone’s face.»
- What’s the best song to listen to if you’re happily in love? The Pop Group – We Are All Prostitutes The Brotherhood of Man – Save All Your Kisses for Me
Neil: «’We Are All Prostitutes’ by The Pop Group.» Richard: «’Save All Your Kisses for Me’ by The Brotherhood of Man.» Brett: «I don’t know, whatever you’re listening to at the moment. I guess that different records are kind of romantic for different kinds of people, aren’t they? I don’t know. I can’t think of one, really.»
- What’s a good song for going out? Grace Jones – La Vie En Rose Neil: «Richard, mention something not crap.» Richard: «A going out song that’s not crap?» Neil: «Yeah, no ‘Dancing Queen’.» Richard: «Yeah, or Chic or something like that.» Brett: «Grace Jones is quite good, uplifting music. Something like ‘La Vie En Rose’ or something like that. I don’t know, it’s just quite beautiful.»
- What’s the song that means the most to you? Suede – Picnic by the Motorway
Richard: «If it’s on of ours I’d probably say something like ‘Picnic by the Motorway’. That was basically the first piece of music I wrote for Suede. And it turned out really good. And I was just like, yes, I can do this. That song made me think of that. Thank God, I can do it.»
- Is there a song that can bring a tear to your eye? Tindersticks – Jism
Neil: «Actually a tear, like physically a tear?» Richard: «The last time that happened, I think I was listening to the Tindersticks. There’s a song on each of their albums that’s just really beautiful music, very moving. What’s a good Tindersticks song? ‘Jism’. Yeah, sorry about the title.»
