one thing i don't think ASOIAF predictions take into account enough is the return of magic to the world and straight up magical shit starting to happen more

happy black history month. here are some black history facts you may not know:

• the practice of gynecology is where it is now at the expense of black women, who were tortured and even killed in the name of medical advancement, forced to undergo surgical procedures without anesthesia. the man who tortured them later became president of the american medical association (source)

• the first black woman, ruby bridges, to attend a school with white children is still alive, and on instagram. she’s young enough to witness and participate in the age of social media. similarly, people born the year interracial marriage was legalized are not even 60.

• an estimated 25% of cowboys were actually black, despite the gate keeping of the culture by a certain demographic of white people (iykyk…). being a cowboy was one of the very few options for employment available to black men after slavery was abolished. (source)

• the black panther party ran a number of invaluable programs, including free breakfast for school children, free groceries, free clothing, services for disabled people, ged classes, legal aid, recreational programs, wic and over 50 others. these programs were subjected to police raids, fbi harassment, and to the end of it because of their goal to dismantle the bpp no matter what. the then fbi director stated: "the program represents the best and most influential activity going for the bpp and, as such, is potentially the greatest threat to efforts by authorities to neutralize the bpp and destroy what it stands for." (1, 2)

• the crips (then community resources for independent people) are a direct result of the dismantlement of the black panther movement and began as a social movement demonstrating resistance against the unjust treatment of black americans. (source)

• the stoplight, laser eye surgery, refrigerated trucks, mailboxes, the microphone, the air conditioner, folding chairs (IYKYK!), and the clothes dryer are all inventions (or advancements to inventions) by black people

• clara belle williams, the first black graduate of the new mexico college, was not allowed into lecture halls. she stood outside and took notes instead, and got her BA in education at 51.

• harriet tubman served in the military on the side of the union, spying on confederate troops, working as a nurse, and even leading a military ambush. the state of maryland posthumously awarded her the title of one star general. (1, 2)

• many genres of music take heavy influences from or find their roots in black culture, including jazz, country, edm, rock, kpop, rock n roll and blues.

• madam cj walker was the first female self made millionaire in the united states!

learn black history and educate yourself. the goal isn’t to be colorblind. you SHOULD see color. you should recognize the struggles, the disparities, the injustices that are associated with that
