Malevolent is really interesting, because Arthur was already partway through his redemption arc when he opened the book and released John. We know he was - at best - self-absorbed and petty throughout his childhood (e.g. burning his friend's toy) and up to Bella and Faroe's deaths he was outright negligent of their needs. After that, Yang helped pull him up and start working on becoming a changed man, helping people through PI work, and then all of a sudden, that was ended in Yang's violent death.

And though that leads to so much pain and suffering, it also forces the close bond Arthur was incapable of forging with anyone else because of his damaged childhood. It's like therapy through ultra-extreme trauma bonding with someone who's done worse things than he has.

John's redemption arc is slower in beginning - it only really starts with Arthur's coma - but I'd love to see a line graph of their paths to redemption throughout the story, where both characters sync up, and all the places they diverge and come back together. Faust and Uncle would probably be Arthur's lowest morality points, and John's I assume would be the stint he spent without Arthur in the Dark World, before New York.

It's very clear throughout the podcast that redemption, like recovery from grief or addiction, isn't a linear process, and both of them stumble at points, either pulling each other up or dragging each other down depending on their own strengths and weaknesses at the time. I want them both to make it. 😭

while i do think arthur being naked is funny, to me his nakedness was immediately the vibe of the dark world.

arthur is naked in the same way a baby is naked. arthur has been "reborn" in death. he is exposed and unprotected. the dark world has stripped him of everything and made his body and soul bare to its elements.

when you are naked you are vulnerable. when you are naked you have no lies.
