If your expectations don’t lower after reading something like this I can’t help you. Things have gone horribly wrong on this show. The bts drama that got CVD off showrunner and JB replacing him obviously hasn’t been the best choice. They should have been finished shooting two months ago. I’m not saying things were perfect under CVD, (we don’t know exactly what started the power struggle,) but the first season and what we fell in love with is gone. The story last year suffered for it and it looks like something really awful has gone wrong this year as well. To delay a season and completely pull an entire plot means a huge loss of money on the season. This does not bode well. My expectations before this was in the gutter, but at this point I’m going lower.

I’m sorry you’re getting rude anons! I like your takes and am so impressed you predicted s3 would be Polin’s. I haven’t read Polin’s book yet so I have a question about what you said regarding Polin’s story:
“It will probably stick pretty close to the book with him then compromising her and then marrying her himself in an effort to protect her using the Bridgerton name.”
Which made me think that they totally rewrote s2 not because they thought it would be too similar to s1 (which the enemies to lovers idea would have prevented) but that they wanted to keep Polin’s story the same and they thought three marriages to save face in a row would be a problem. I mean, this would mean they don’t have an issue repeating the trope, they just had to choose which couple to keep it for?
And that seems so weird to me when, as you pointed out, this friends to lovers has the potential to feel very similar to Saphne because theirs was a friends to lovers too, and here they’re likely to force them into a wedding just like s1. So why the wild changes to the book for s2 if they don’t mind the redundancy?
Thanks Anon for being kind! I have a feeling it was the same person coming at me and their last message which I didn't respond to basically got me thinking my points hit a little too close to home and the uncomfortable truth for them. But in the meantime I did learn a lesson where I went wrong, if I don't tag in a certain way, the crazies won't come for me.
I wish I could answer for you why the writers/producers made the choices they made. If I understood that level of crazy I might be a very rich woman. If they were truly worried about redundancy then they made the wrong choice of series, or genre for that matter, to adapt. Romance novels, for the most part, pretty much follow a similar formula no matter what the trope is. As a reader you know what you're getting yourself into. Its comfort reading the same way mac and cheese is a comfort meal. Perhaps it was never the brightest idea to commit to a tv series that would last years when every member of the family ends up in some kind of scandal with their marriage.
I think for this reason we haven't seen any copycat series pop up when it was assumed after season one this was the moment for romance to make a comeback. In the end, its going to be difficult to find something that isn't so similar. I would also suspect that most authors out there who write romance novels are not going to be as accommodating as JQ and hand over all the rights to the show. I doubt a lot of authors are going to be so generous to any production company if they read TVWLM and saw how it was so messed up when adapted.
If I got into specifics with this book..... I don't want to give away spoilers for you since you haven't read the book, but Colin's reasons for marriage aren't just the compromise. It wasn't witnessed so they could have gotten away with it, but he has another reason why he feels the only option to protect Penelope is marriage. It's enough to differentiate from Simon and Daphne at least.
As far as why the writers (or Shonda the puppet master) are cool with giving such a similar story, I'd guess its just playing favorites. Penelope is the favorite in that room and they simply don't care it (the book) isn't the favorite outside of there.

you are so dramatic. if your gonna complain about bridgerton, don’t watch it. i can promise you nobody cares. your account is literally just you acting childish.
Lol and yet you took the time to write something to me.
Criticism is a fact of life. Thousands of people around the world get paid to do it. The idea that people have these days that you should only blow smoke up everyone ass or shut up is laughable. Debate and differences of opinion so long as it’s not violent are how progress actually happens.
Just because my criticism is on point, but aimed at your faves doesn’t make it invalid. I get way more agreements than disagreements with what I write.

Not you sitting on a high horse only calling out RMB for its red flags when EVERY book in this series has abusive elements and toxic masculinity in it. Don’t be selective.
Uhhhh did I ever say the other books didn't have serious call outs??? I'm bringing up RMB right now because that's the book on deck being adapted. I was also addressing the ask about the story for this book and season, not the whole damn series.
Yeah, Anthony (in the book) refused to stop when Kate asked him to as it was his "husbandly right". Benedict still slept with Sophie when she refused to be his mistress more than once. Colin dragged Penelope and didn't give her a choice about their marriage. And Greg fucking kidnapped and tied up Lucy. Find me a Regency Romance that doesn't have toxic masculinity. Books written about a time 200 years ago when women had no rights are likely going to be like that. No it doesn't fly today hence the reason people call it out and when it's being adapted things have to be changed.
And those are just the male Bridgerton books. These books were written 20 years ago or more. They are flawed. The characters in them are flawed. Just because someone feels a draw to a specific book or couple doesn't mean someone else can't RIGHTLY criticize it.
If anyone is sitting on a high horse its this ask assuming they know how I feel about everything. Congratulations on living up to the expectations of anons on the internet.

But it isnt the same story as s1. Colin isnt going to be fake dating/courting Pen like Simon, he is just her wingman.
Fake dating and "romance" lessons are two different tropes. Think more My Fair Lady than s1.
It's not the exact same thing, you're right, but it's being purposely written to sound pretty close to that. They knew they needed to change the story and they could have chosen any manner of story, but they decided to go back to square one pretty much.
It's insulting if you think about it from the point of view that they kept saying they changed the second season so it wouldn't be the same story when practically nothing about the original book was similar to the first other than the idea of a compromise. I mean let's face it, every book in the series is someone from the Bridgerton family marrying someone else because of a scandal. What harm would it have really done if they kept it closer in line to the book? It probably would have gotten better reviews honestly.
Season one was friends pretending to date to mutual benefit. Daphne kept other girls away from Simon and he drew the attention from suitors to her.
In this instance no it won't serve as a mutual symbiotic situation, but it will still be the basic idea where the male is trying to help the female find a husband the way it was in season one.
My prediction is Colin will attempt to help Penelope find a husband as a way to get back into her good graces. He'll be mildly confused about his feelings for a bit and then he'll find out about her being LW. It will probably stick pretty close to the book with him then compromising her and then marrying her himself in an effort to protect her using the Bridgerton name. The same could be said about Simon having to marry Daphne using his title to protect her from Cressida knowing there was a compromise. He's going to believe he's doing this all for his friend and then he's going to figure out he loves his wife.
It straddles both the story of season one and of the book that way.

Are you surprised by their storyline? I’m not sure how they’ll convince us Colin is worldly or that Pen would go to him for help after she heard what he said, it seems like she should go to like…anyone else?
Also you’re right. Nicola is gorgeous as always but Luke looked…odd. But I don’t find him charismatic at all and never thought he’d be a convincing lead for a historical romance so I’m biased against him I think.
Sigh......
So am I surprised they changed the storyline? No. Definitely not.
Colin's book to put it mildly is Red Flag City. Colin in every other book he appears, Dr. Jekyll. Nice guy, eats a lot, makes jokes, delights in teasing his family, enjoys travel. In his own book, Psycho Mr. Hyde comes out. He's forceful and frankly abusive with Penelope and she goes along with it because at the end of the day she had never given up on her crush of him, even after what he said about her in book three/season two.
In 2023 (assuming that's when this will debut) that is NOT going to fly with an audience. An offhand comment that's genuinely apologized for might be forgivable. Dragging a woman into a carriage painfully from the description, compromising her (which wasn't witnessed,) and then not actually giving a choice her a choice to get married to said person is not.
That said, when I read:
Meanwhile, Colin is back from his summer travels with a new look and major swagger. He is disheartened to learn that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin helps Penelope boost her confidence so as to attract the perfect husband. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin is faced with figuring out what his true feelings for his friend really are.
My jaw hit the damn floor!
I'm sorry, the writers room twisted themselves into damn pretzels trying to change TVWLM so it didn't come off too similar to TDAI story, (There was a compromise in both, so what! Literally NOTHING else was the same!) And then subsequently twisted themselves tighter to justify those changes when they so obviously backfired making them look terrible. Now they're basically going back to the same damn story for Shonda's sainted self-insert? I highly doubt anyone in that writer's room has a dictionary to look up the word hypocrite, but maybe the fandom should all send them the definition. (Also, way to rip off about 50% of the fanfics out there professional writers, pretty sure I've read better on AO3 than what will actually be produced.)
I'm not so sure Penelope actively seeks out Colin's help to attract someone, I feel like he thinks very highly of himself and that he knows more than the poor little wallflower because he's seen more of the world. I figure he's going to insert himself into her search for a husband with unsolicited advice and suffer foot in mouth disease when he realizes that as other people take an interest, he's not immune. He's going to see it as helping to get back on her good side and she's going to just humor him because she's tired of fighting him off or ignoring him.
All I know is they better work up one HELL of a redemption arc and end the LW plot with Penelope this season. It says she wants the independence to continue, but there's no way the Bridgerton Family is going to be cool with her joining the family and going on with it when they know the damage she did. I doubt Eloise would let that slide for longer, especially with her brother marrying Penelope. And lord knows I'm bored with the Queen trying to chase down the author. To continue it on past season three is tedious.
My final thing is "Colin's new look"..... You ever see someone who looks like they lost too much weight? After seeing the video a few more times I think that's what I'm noticing. And possibly using too much self tanner.

I'm just gonna come right out and say it, season three sounds exactly like season one's story, and a stupid idea that is going to get called out worse than the damn Featherington side (shit) plot of season two by critics.
And LN looks terrible in the promo. What the hell? I mean I don't find him attractive myself, but his face looks kinda off? Nicola looks lovely though.
