Faculty Union Trip to March for Science
Rutgers has a very active faculty union, the AAUP-AFT, which helped sponsored and organized a bus trip to the March for Science. The Union has been very active in opposing the Trump administration. By organizing this bus trip, they helped create a communal space where the Rutgers community can discuss and come up with a plan to resist the Trump administration's cuts to education and science. Rutgers Climate March
Several Rutgers student groups joined forces and participated in the 4th Rutgers Climate March. This year’s march was very popular and shows some members of the Rutgers community are in favor of environmental protects. The Trump administration has been open about plans to cut the EPA and many corresponding laws. Science Matters at Rutgers Video
The central administration created a video titled “Science Matters at Rutgers” as a part of their #Rutgers4Science campaign. The video features important central administrators from all three campuses speaking about the importance of scientific research at the University. This video and campaign were a part of a large effort by the central administration to prove scientific research and facts matter, when the Trump administration is threatening to cut science and education funding. The Rutgers administration launched a social media campaign during mid-April titled #Rutgers4Science. The campaign was a part of a week long celebration of the scientific and research communities at Rutgers. This campaign was a direct push back against the Trump administration threatening to cut funding for science and higher education grants in general. March 8th was International Women’s Day and some members of the Rutgers Community held events to celebrate. Most notably there was a walk out to teach in on College Ave. While midterms limited who could participate, there were still a good number of attendees. There were a diverse array of topics covered during the teach ins, all of which focusing on ways to better resist the current political administration.  Photo Credit: Chelsea Crane

Posters like this one appeared all over campus this semester after an anti-Muslim flyer was tacked to the Paul Robeson Cultural Center. The poster says “We Have a Right To Exist” which shows solidarity with the Muslim community. I saw this one at a bus stop but I have seen many copied placed all around the University. The Rutgers community has largely been very supportive of the Muslim community.  Photo Credit: Chelsea Crane

Graffiti is a popular form of political expression alive in the Hub City. The above sign shows support for the Muslim community, and was spray painted onto the Train Station bus stop on the College Ave campus. This spot is very visible for both the Rutgers community, and city community since it is also a popular city bus stop. It is a symbol that is meant to be seen.

Rutgers Conservative Union
One of the most vocal groups on the Rutgers campus since the election has been the Rutgers Conservative Union, formerly named Rutgers for Trump. This group has sometimes come under fire for saying things that border on hate speech but they are still an important force in the Rutgers community right now. The Yard is the newest and most expensive on campus housing building, located at the busy Scott Hall bus stop on College Ave. The green lawn with chairs and table is meant to be a communal space for students. If you look closely at the photo you can see an anti-Trump sign in one of the windows that says “Love Trumps Hate”. This is another highly visible form of resistance.

Anti-Muslim Flyer Posted at RU Cultural Center
The PRCC is known for being a place of community and inclusion, but at one point this semester someone put an anti-Muslim poster on the walls of the Center. The story gained major news media attention, and shows that not everyone at Rutgers has been supportive of the Muslim community. Members of the New Brunswick community also demonstrated to make New Brunswick a sanctuary city. New Brunswick is known to have a high population of documented people. Members of the community are fighting for their rights and the rights of their friends and neighbors. This march happened only a few days after the Muslim Ban Protest, but was not as popular. However it was still an impactful event and showed members of the New Brunswick are also mobilizing just like students are. Rutgers New Brunswick students held a gathering to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community at Rutgers on January 31st. This event occurred days after the first travel ban was announced. Students mobilized on both sides very quickly and put the event together in just a few days. There was also a counter protest to support the travel ban that occurred just a few yards over.

The Rutgers University administration has openly opposed the Trump administration on many fronts including their immigration plans. On January 31st Rutgers President Robert Barchi sent out a mass email to all students and staff condemning Trump’s immigration ban. He pledged the university will stand in solidarity with Muslim student population. He delivered these remarks verbally that evening at a student protest against the Muslim ban. The University has received push back on social media for their anti-Trump position.
