Woo into the double digits with Day 10 of Drewtober! Today it was the Shadow Ranch Cake which was problematic for me because the recipe is already set... so here is my take on it. I made cupcakes and piped the tulips instead (not because I couldn't get marzipan, perish the thought).

New Theory: Charlotte and Clara are Actually Sisters

okay maybe I'm crazy but I had a thought on Clara's father... the incest theory always bugged me bc a) EW I just don't want it to be true lol and b) I don't think that Charlotte's first reaction to finding that out would be immediately going to write her out of the will. You hear about her compassion throughout the game and I would assume she would first try to offer some help to Clara, maybe counseling or something before immediately thinking of herself and her will. SO what if Clara's father is....Charlotte's (and Harper's) father? You hear at multiple points in the game how in love Charlotte's parents were and how they had the perfect relationship. Maybe Clara's mom refused to say who the father was because she knew she would be completely ostracized from the family for sleeping with her sister's beloved husband. I think this also would explain why Charlotte would be so adamant about changing her will - if Clara was actually her sister, she would have a much more legitimate claim to the Thornton fortune, and there would be urgency in changing the beneficiary to Harper. It would also explain why Clara would be so upset about it - in her mind she is the rightful recipient (she may even be older than Charlotte, the family tree lists them both being born in 1968), and Charlotte is undercutting her.

The HeR email giving additional context to the night specifically mentions that Clara was threatened by Charlotte's place in the family and "Charlotte had the family and childhood she wished she had. Her insecurity wasn't just a personal flaw, it was a response to her uneven upbringing." I think the juxtaposition between their childhoods is made even more intense if they actually shared a father. Charlotte got everything Clara wanted, even her own dad, and then tries to write Clara out of her will, alienating her once again.

If this all came out, I think it's a much bigger justification for starting the fire rather than discovering your grandpa is your dad. The latter would leave me absolutely destroyed and disgusted, not at Charlotte, but at Jackson. In this case, Charlotte is the direct beneficiary of the lies and coverups between Clara's parents, and is taking an action to continue that pattern - it makes a lot more sense why Clara would then direct her anger to Charlotte in that moment. I know the incest theory is very popular and has been around since the game came out so I don't think I'll convince everyone, but this makes a lot more sense to me narratively and in the context of what HeR would put in a game meant for younger audiences. What do you think? (also I'm sorry if anyone came to this conclusion before me and this is nothing new lol. If that is the case take this as my two cents in the ongoing conversation!)

My husband works in construction and he said the same thing when we played the game. That if the Penvellyns were smart they would have pushed the uninitiated into stone masonry jobs to maintain the manor if nothing else. Because after, what, 600-700 years? A strong gust of wind at this point could knock that sucker over when Nancy arrives. Everything has been scooped out so much for puzzles that it's an OSHA nightmare everywhere.

Blackmoor Manor can't have escaped renovations to the point of not discovering the secret passages from the "Uninitiated." You're telling me not one person in the lineage of owners wanted to start knocking out walls and combining rooms or building a master suite with a jacuzzi tub and walk-in closet only to delightfully discover more square footage available with those passageways? No one in the past thought the secret ways were servants' corridors and put extra entry points through the kitchen and dining room and did away with the puzzle doors.

Mrs. Petrov says the rooms look like they were decorated by a medieval monkey, and we agree there's no cohesion in the design of the house and its rooms. Yet no one's spouse got it into their head throughout the years to remodel anything. And still the puzzles and passageways all function perfectly after centuries.

Is there some safeguard in the inheritance that only generations of an initiate have legal cause to make structural changes and thus protect the secret? Is there another guild like the Bossinny tutors who are surveyers and builders for wealthy people who like to have panic rooms and secret passages in their houses and are sworn to secrecy?

Picking Themes for 2025!

Trying to stay more on top of things this year! Before I put up a poll for us to pick this year's theme, I wanted to ask y'all if you had suggestions for what to put on the poll besides the ones that were on last year's poll.

Themes that didn't win:

Favorite puzzle (Brendan's chemicals, stenography, vegetable picking).

Favorite character (Dave, Henry, Beatrice, etc)

• Emeline Wright has Lee at 17 and Jackson at 19 and and dies at 27. Why? Beauregard was remembered as mean. Did he cause his wife's early death? Was their wedding a shotgun wedding and he didn't want to be married to her?

• Cornelia Thornton, sister-in-law to Emeline, also has her first kids at 19, but lives to be 73. She marries out of the family instead of into it, and all of her kids take her husband's name instead of the Thornton name. She would have heard about the factory incident gtim the horse's mouth. Was she trying to escape ties to the family? Wade has no information to share about members from her side.

• Whitney had her kids at 20, 22, and 24. Dies at 31. Married into the family. Her husband would have been raised by a man remembered as mean and who's wife had kids very young and died young. Is there a correlation?

• Rosalie has Clara at 25, dies at 30, never marries. Death seemingly isn't cancer, they would have known about cancer by the 70s and likely would have told Clara. Game says she died when Clara was 10 but she would have died when Clara was 5 according to the timeline. If this follows the incest theory, did Rosalie look the most like Whitney? Did Jackson arrange her death eventually because he feared she might tell her sisters about Clara's origins? If using the incest theory, Rosalie dies young much like other women who have children with Thornton men.

• Mariana has Charlotte at 23 and Harper at 26. Dies at 39. Presumably was married by 23 if not a bit earlier. Married out of the family to a man who seemingly didn't have a temper and she was not well regarded by the Thorton's herself. Was her father one of them? How much of her death was an accident?

• Virginia has Wade at 32, well past the ages her sisters had kids. She marries out of the family to a hot tempered man who slams doors so much it's his trademark. Did the couple live till their 70s unlike the rest because Virginia married a suitably mean man in her father's eyes? Or was it because the company was going to Charlotte, who's parents were dead and whom Jackson could control, and he didn't care what became of her?

• Joseph Thornton dies at 1 and his sister Harriet at 10, leaving only Hiriam, who lives to be 50. His wife Levenia lives to be 55.

• Levenia has her kids at 26, 27, and 29. She dies when Beauregard 28 and Cornelia is 26. Both kids are seemingly married before their parents have passed with Beauregard having his kids when his wife is 17 and 19, a bizarre turnaround when his own mom had her kids in her 20s. Why the rush for kids? And why with him did the trend of women dying exceptionally young begin? He would have heard about the factory incident and met Jeb, but not Sarah, who locked herself in her room out of grief. Did Jeb possibly speak poorly of his wife and her mindset over the accident? Presumably he was the part of the family that started the "accidents happen, get over it" mentality when it comes to human lives.

Wait but also can we talk about how CUR is all about the ladies? Like you can call Hugh, but other than that it’s all ladies except for Nigel. And everyone’s stance on Nigel is basically “lol Nigel. what an irrelevant nerd.” I find this really cool and significant when you think about the fact that it’s got the lycanthropy thing, and the moon is traditionally thought of as this very feminine symbol, to the point where it’s also been tied in with madness (I know, I know) in things like palmistry and history. And then there’s the implied witch thing. And it’s a few generations of women featured. And even though Hugh can be considered the head of the family, he can’t be bothered to learn about his family’s history and secrets while it’s made clear that it’s super important for Jane to learn all about it. Is this just me having feelings or do other people also see where I’m coming from here?

When Jane was in the states I assume Ethel wasn’t yet her tutor, but Ethel must have been learning about Penvellyn history her whole life in order to teach Jane about it (as well as other subjects like geometry and Latin and crap, or enough to give auxiliary help with homeschooling materials). If Mrs. Drake hadn’t convinced Hugh to get Ethel as Jane’s tutor, does that just mean she would have spent her whole life bidding to the calling of being a Bosinny and learning the Penvellyn secrets and wouldn’t have actually put all that boring history to use??

Would Mrs. Drake have put a hit out to end the Bosinny line for knowing too much about the Penvellyns and not actually teaching Jane!? Or lured Ethel to the manor and into her carnivorous plants……..
