Colab Project Eng 320
MaNee Lee, Brett K., Andrew H.
Collaborative Assignment pg 444
Metaphor we chose:
“War with Inflation”
About Inflation: The current inflation rate published a couple days ago (April 11th) in the U.S. is 2.4% as of March 2018, a 12 month period. Overall, we think the inflation rate is neutral and should balance so it is hard to distinguish where this metaphor would be used or misused (war with inflation). It really depends on the situation and who it is applying to as we will mention later in our project.
Obtained info from and more specifics: http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/
Websites/Articles/Examples that fit the situation:
● Inflation is here - and may get worse (article) by Anthony M.

● Inflation being bad for the country

● How inflation is bad and how to protect your money
○ https://www.gobankingrates.com/making-money/causes-inflation-effects-inflation-matter/
Websites/Articles/Examples where metaphor is misused:
● Fed’s Williams sees US inflation at or above goal for years
○ https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/17/feds-williams-sees-u-s-inflation-at-or-above-goal-for-years.html
● Why is it good? (its not misused, but could be misleading, hence our metaphor title)
● Why Feds aim for higher inflation rate (atleast 2%)
● Why should we hate low inflation
○ http://time.com/money/3749245/low-inflation-bad/
If we accept this metaphor:
● Who is the enemy:
○ Depends
■ Consumers Vs Producers
■ Producers Vs Consumers
● What weapons do we use: Money, products, services, and the economy in general.
● What level of force is necessary to win this war: Balancing out the inflation rate with prices, services, demand, and supply.
● Where might we violate civil rights if we follow this metaphor to its logical end: Feds making changing up policies, tax policies, producers illegally selling products, and the list goes on.
Changing our metaphor to consider situation from a different perspective: As mentioned, depending on how we shift our focus being a consumer or producer working with supply or demand, thats how we can shift the metaphor to gain a different perspective. Specific example would be oil companies favoring the prices going up for profit while consumers/customers disfavor it because they are paying more for less amount. The perspective can be taken into account going vice versa.

Letter of Application
Date: March 3, 2018
To: Dr. Glenda Jones
From: Brett Knoebel
Subject: Letter of Application
I believe that I would be a very strong candidate for this position because of my very strong grasp on 3D modeling in solid works which is a lot of what this job entails. I also believe I have very good problem-solving skills which is crucial in any engineering position. Lastly, I have worked in teams my while life, so I know how to cooperate with others well.
The first thing I think of when it comes to more education would be more in geometric dimensioning just because when I did learn about it was short and not in much depth, so it didn’t stick ion my brain like I would’ve hoped it would. I would also like a little more field experience.

Mr. Jason Dowel, Human Resources Director
HUSCO International
2239 Pewaukee Rd.
Waukesha, WI 53188
Dear Mr. Dowel
Last year I met with a representative of HUSCO International at the UW Stout career fair. They had mentioned to me that at that time HUSCO was looking for candidates with more education and told me to contact you in a year after I had completed more engineering courses and apply for an entry level position. If there is a position at this time or in the future, I would like to apply for it. With my knowledge and hands on experience in Mechanical Engineering, I would make a valuable addition to your company.
My work experience includes one summer as a co-op at Seagrave Fire Apparatus. My responsibilities included, designing racks for their trucks and being fluent in Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances. I also practiced my skills in team work and compromise. I also have experience at Rhodes Towing and Repair. My responsibilities there was general car maintenance, servicing Semi-Trucks, and AAA roadside assistance.
My education in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin Stout has allowed me to become fluent in 3D modeling on solid works, get a strong grasp on GD&T and Machine Design. Not only did I was I taught these skills in the class room, but UW Stout allowed me to get hands on experience in their labs.
I have enclosed my resume, which includes all my other qualifications not mentioned in this letter. I have a great deal of interest in this company and would appreciate the opportunity to come and talk to you about any open positions you may have available for me. If you would like to contact me, please give me a call at 555-555-5555 or email me at [email protected]
Sincerely

Proposal
Lighting Behind Jarvis at the University of Wisconsin Stout
A Proposal to the Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Stout
Feb. 28, 2018
I am writing this proposal regarding the lack of lighting behind the Jarvis building. The purpose of this proposal is to stress the importance of more and different lighting options behind the Jarvis building at the University of Wisconsin Stout. I want to stress the safety risks that the lack of light behind this building causes.
In the past I’ve heard stories of students climbing on top of the building at night in the spots where passer byers can’t see them. The actions of these students are irresponsible no doubt, but will it be them at fault if something were to happen to them? No, the university will be to blame.
Current Lighting Situation
Currently, the back side of the building where the parking lot buts up to has a serious lack of lighting at night. There area by the dumpsters is my main concern. In that area would be nearly impossible to see anyone sneaking around there. The dumpsters and the walls nearby cast heavy shadows making it easy to stay out of site. Not only can we have kids sneaking on the roof putting themselves in harms way, but this also create the possibility of students getting mugged or robbed in these dark areas as well.
My Proposed Actions
1. More lights. Put more lights in the areas with the shadows to eliminate them. The less shadows there are means less places to hide.
2. Motion censored lights. I would really like you to consider putting motion censored lights up in these areas. Not only do they create more light for visibility, but they would also be startling any approaching intruders and deter them from going any further.
If you ask me this is a very small price to pay for the safety of our students. I hope the points I have made here push you in the direction of more lights.

Midwest Sparkleen

Milwaukee, WI 53207
Dear Mr. Allred
We have enjoyed Midwest Sparkleen’s services over these past five years. They have done have exemplary work. However, after the change in ownership this last year the service has plummeted.
We have had to call the company at least six time to remind them of tasks that are supposed to be addressed routinely, offices are not being cleaned thoroughly and there have been toxic cleaning chemicals left in public hallways. I have spoken with the owner several times about these issues but have yet to see any improvements. After our lobby door was left unlocked last Thursday evening leaving our facility vulnerable to theft we decided it’s time to make a change.
We are sorry to inform you that PolicyPlan will not be renewing its annual cleaning contract with Midwest Sparkleen when the current contract expires at the end of the month. We wish Midwest Sparkleen the best and hope you manage to find another contract.
I you would like to contact us with any questions or concerns call me at 555-555-5555
