Anti-Asian Racism: The FAQ

In light of some of the recent mostly unwanted attention some of my posts on the topic have gotten, here’s a comprehensive FAQ based on what I’ve observed.

I’m not Asian, does my opinion matter?

No. It literally doesn’t.

But I’m [non-asian poc]!

Not even a little.

But I live in Japan!

Don’t care.

But I took a class on Japanese!

Don’t care.

Is using ‘Asian culture’ [read: melon bread, assorted asian foods, Korean and Japanese fashion, nonsensical Japanese/Korean words on a pastel background, etc] as my aesthetic racist?

Yes.

Why?

It’s fetishistic and often assumes 'Asian culture’ is some monolithic thing and ignores the fact that Japan and Korea aren’t the only countries that exist.

But my Token Asian Friend said I could!

Probably because you’re weird and annoying. Still racist.

But people in Japan/Korea think it’s ok!

Mainlanders have little to no perspective of anti-asian racism and appropriation because they live in a homogenous country with few white people and therefore do not experience it in the way that diaspora asians do. Therefore, mainland opinions should be taken with a grain of salt and NOT used as an argument against diaspora complaints.

Why is asking an asian’s ethnicity racist?

Because it’s none of your business and often implies you don’t think we’re 'from’ here (here being whatever western country you’re in).

Can I use [insert asian slur here]?

Not if you aren’t asian.

Can I use [slur directed towards other race in asian language]?

Tricky topic. Unless you live in that country and are that race, I would say no, and ask yourself why you want to use a foreign slur so badly.

Is x still racist if I’m [non-asian poc]?

Yes.

But poc can’t be racist!

Reblogging posts about anti-asian racism and not ignoring it when people around you are being racist or fetishistic would be nice. Being self-critical when called out instead of arguing semantics would also be gr8.
