The origin of cashless card systems in the laundry industry

Eighteen years ago, accepting credit cards at bay was unheard of, and loyalty programs were nothing like they are today. The concept of a loyalty program consisted of discounted tokens, token notes, and coupon books. Seventeen years ago, the concept of card-based cashless acceptance in the car wash was only realized and evangelized by one man in the car wash industry, while the rest of the car wash industry was content to sell tokens and coupons. . You might remember seeing a guy at the ICA trade show in the early 1990s with a fish tank on his booth that had goldfish and a card reader on the bottom to demonstrate the ability of readers to work on " wet conditions. " That man in the fishbowl was Dan Yarusso, and he founded a company in 1990 called WashCard Systems. Based out of his garage in Hugo Minnesota, Dan started his business as a one-man show. In an interview with Yarusso, I was able to learn that the WashCard was not originally invented to be sold to other car wash operators. In fact, it was created out of a need to market your own struggling car wash.

What was going to be a profitable side business was fast becoming a huge stressor for Dan and his family. When he was out of the washroom on weekdays, Dan worked for a company that designed access control technology for security systems. It was with this knowledge of access control technology that gave Dan an idea of ​​how to fix a problem of his. Dan hated carrying pockets full of tokens just so he could wash his self-serve bays. After weeks of tinkering, it had plugged in waterproof access card readers in each of its bays. The readers were hooked up to programmed control panels in his equipment room that were then hooked up to the bay timers. By swiping a valid card through the reader, it would send a signal to the wash bay and start the wash bay and it would not turn off again until you swiped the card a second time.

Eureka! The breakthrough

It was a late weekend when Dan finally got the system up and running. He ran from bay to bay swiping his card that would activate the bay. Then he would run back to his office and check the bay activity on the black and green terminal monitor on his desk. With all the commotion, it wasn't long before a customer approached Dan and asked what all the commotion was about. Dan recalls that maybe he was a little too excited when he gestured for the customer to enter the bay and explained, "Okay, so I take this card and slide it through the reader ... and now the bay lights up! card goes off again.
