API, Projekt Newspeak, and the K-Town Reality Show
Konnect had a very special guest - actually, guests - for our second general meeting (October 5, 2010). Joining us were Eddie Kim, who is the creator of Projekt Newspeak and one of the producers of the K-Town Reality Show, Mike Le, one of the other producers of the K-Town Reality Show as well as Vice President of HQ Pictures, which is Tyrese Gibson's production company, as well as Violet Kim, one of the stars of the show.
Eddie spoke to Konnect about his life, struggles, Projekt Newspeak, the K-Town Reality Show, and also showed us a small clip from the show that has not been released to the public yet! Now for a little bit of background info.
Projekt Newspeak supports the "APA and independent arts community by impacting the mainstream media through entertaining and innovative projects that speak to the hearts and minds of all people." It ultimately seeks to change the way that the API community is perceived in the world. They've put on some amazing spoken word events - also check out their Youtube videos!

While you may or may not have heard about the K-Town Reality Show, you surely will in the near future. There has been much debate and controversy surrounding the show, with opponents protesting that the show will paint a negative image for the Asian American community. However, supporters make the point that the Asian American stereotype of being shy, quiet, and only studious will be broken. In fact, Guy Aoki of MANAA, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, which follows the portrayal of Asian Americans in media, gave the show a thumbs up. If society perceived the API community as quiet and shy in the past, the K-Town Reality Show serves as a visible contrast and challenge to that stereotype.
As he was speaking to Konnect, Eddie also emphasized that the show is meant to present the complicated and diverse personalities, thoughts, and feelings of these cast members.
In the end, they do not serve as a portrayal of the entire API community, nor are they meant to be. Rather, each cast member has their own background and story to tell that will differ greatly from one another - simply, they aren't caricatures that represent the entire community, just themselves. There is no representation that everybody will be satisfied with, and that's ok. What's important is realizing that every individual is shaped by both their own positive and negative traits and that seeking a 'perfect' portrayal is impossible and even dangerous.
We look forward to seeing the progress of the show and how it shapes dialogue concerning the media representation of APIs. Thank you, Eddie, Mike, and Violet, for coming to speak to Konnect!
