Mast Cell Tumors (MCT)

What are Mast Cells?

Mast Cells are found within the Connective tissue all around the body, however are usually in higher numbers in areas that are close to the external parts of the body i.e the skin, mouth and nose. Their main functions include defending the body against parasite invasions, angiogenesis and repairing damaged tissue. They also play a part in the allergic responses as they contain heparin and histamine.

How common are MCT’s?

MCT’s are one of the most common skin tumours to affect dogs, however they can also affect in inside of the body namely; the spleen, liver and GI tract. The Brachycephalic breeds such as the Boxer, Boston Terrier, Pug and Bulldog have been shown to be the most likely to develop these tumours however any breed is at risk. 

What do MCT’s look like?

When MCT’s develop within the skin layers their appearance can be different, some develop as just lumps under the skin, which increase and decrease in size spontaneously as the granules within them de-granulise. Trauma to the lump can also make them shrink in size. While some lumps can become ulcerated, red and swollen making them painful for the patient. 

How do you diagnose a lump as a MCT? 

Most vets will take one of two approaches to confirming a MCT diagnosis. The first involves removing the lump with wide margins and sending it to a eternal lab for histopathology. The second is via a fine needle aspirate, this involves taking a sample of cells from the lump with a needle and syringe and then looking at it under the microscope. When a MCT is suspected most vets will opt  for the first options as not to aggravate the lump and cause the release and spread of substances that could cause systemic illness. 

Grading scale 

Once sent for histopathology, the MCT can be graded to determine how malignant it is. 

Grade 1 - Often found in the skin and while often big and difficult to remove they are normally benign.

Grade 2 - Found with the skin and often attached to the subcutaneous layer. At a microscopic level the cells show some signs of malignancy.

Grade 3 -  Very aggressive and attached deep into the body layers. This grade MCT will need intensive treatment.

Staging

In addition to grading, MCT’s can also be staged to determine how much they have metastasised. The staging is based on how many tumours were present, if there was surround lymph node involvement and if all the tumour was removed.

Stage 0 - one MCT is the skin which has been incompletely removed.

Stage 1 - one MCT in the skin with no lymph node involvement.

Stage 2 - one MCT in the skin with lymph node involvement

Stage 3 - multiple, large skin deep tumours with or with lymph node involvement

Stage 4 -  one/multiple MCT with metastases in the skin with lymph node involvement

Treatment

Surgical Removal - If the MCT is an area where it can be removed with wide margins to ensure all cancerous tissue is removed, this is the best and most effective option.

Radiotherapy - This treatment is recommended if surgical removal is not possible. It has been shown to reduce insistences of reoccurrence and increase survival rates.

Chemotherapy - In severe cases, chemotherapy can be used alongside surgical removal and radiations.  However MCT’s do not respond that well to chemotherapy drugs as other types of cancers do.

Prognosis 

This depends on the grade and stage of the MCT’s. The lower the grade and stage the better the prognosis. The location of the tumours can also influence prognosis, for example MCT’s on the legs have a better prognosis than MCT’s found on the internal organs, muzzle and mouth.

2⃣  Pangea: The Vegan Store - Same type of shop as Vegan Essentials with a slightly different product line.

3⃣ MooShoes - MooShoes’ storefront is in NYC, but they also have an online store with a great selection of vegan shoes, bags, and wallets for men and women.

4⃣ Compassion Couture- Ladies visit them for a slightly more upscale product line than MooShoes.

5⃣ Vegan Chic - Higher end vegan shoes and accessories. They carry men’s products as well.

6⃣ Alternative Outfitters - For cheaper vegan clothes, shoes, and accessories. Much more affordable. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. I’ve never found anything I liked on their shop. Slim pickings.

Köpeklerimiz için Hindistan Cevizi Yağı!

Çok uzun zaman oldu yazmayalı, iş güç koşuşturmaca derken arayı epey uzattım.

Başlıktan da anlayacağınız gibi konumuz Hindistan cevizi yağı. Fakat bu yağ bildiğiniz aktarlardan alınan, küçük şişe içinde satılan yağlardan değil, şimdiden söylemekte fayda görüyorum.

Hindistan cevizi yağı adı üstünde Hindistan cevizinden bir takım işlemler sonucunda elde edilen bitkisel bir yağdır. Hindistan cevizi yağı aslında doymuş yağ oranı yüksek bir yağdır, yaklaşık %92 gibi. Ancak orta zincirli yağ grubuna girer, yani depolanmadan kolaylıkla enerjiye dönüşür. Hayvansal yağlar da doymuş yağlar grubundadır fakat uzun zincirli  yağlar oldukları için enerjiye dönüştürmek için de uzun bir süreç gerektirir. Ayrıca Hindistan cevizi yağı, doymuş yağ oranının yüksek olmasından dolayı trans yağa dönüşmekte en dayanıklı yağdır ki bu da pişirme işlemlerine en yatkın yağ olmasını sağlar. İçeriğindeki lauric asit (lorik asit) antibakteriyel, antiviral ve antifungal özelliklere sahiptir.

Hindistan cevizi yağını çok kullanan ülkelerde kalp hastalıkları oranı oldukça düşüktür ve yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda Alzheimer hastalığına bağlı beyin hasarını yavaşlattığı görülmüştür.

Köpeklerde besin desteği olarak kullanıldığında; tiroidi dengeler, kilolu köpeklerin kilo vermesinde yardımcı olur, yaşlı köpeklerin daha enerjik olmasını sağlar, hastalıklardan korur, iyileşmeyi hızlandırır, alerjik reaksiyonların azalmasına yardımcı olur, sindirimi kolaylaştırır, deri ve tüy bakımı için de oldukça faydalıdır.

Deri ve tüy bakımı için ise krem gibi sürerek kullanabilirsiniz bu yağı. Düşesin deri ile ilgili bir problemi olmadığı için hiç bu şekilde kullanmadık fakat forumlarda okuduklarım kadarı ile kullananlar çok fayda gördüklerini yazıyorlar. Eğer alerjik bir köpeğiniz varsa ve çok kaşınıyorsa deneyebilirsiniz.

Günlük olarak verilmesi gereken doz ise; 4,5 kg için ¼ çaykaşığı kadardır. Kokusu ve tadı sebebi ile Düşes bayılıyor. Kavanoz kapağı sesini duyar duymaz mutfakta bitiyor. Hazır köpek bisküvilerini vermeyi bıraktığımdan beri bizim için verilen bir ödül yerini de almış oldu Hindistan cevizi yağı. Yürüyüş sonrası içinde ne olduğunu bilmediğim hazır bisküvileri vermektense yarım çay kaşığı Hindistan cevizi yağı veriyorum kızıma.
