FLORIDA DEATH METAL BAND DEATH; often acknowledged as the grandfather of DEATH METAL(along with other bands such as Possessed, Deicide, Obituary,etc) focus on a versatile splay of topics. Their 1987 Scream Bloody Gore track sets up the preliminary tenets for death metal in its body horror, gore-y bloody schtick. 1988's Leprosy goes more into the direction of plague, suffering and death to 100. Their Leprosy track is in the perspective of those who suffered with leprosy. Even shown on the album cover, there's this despairing pinkish swirl, the spacial depth between the man in the foreground and the others in the background. DEATH speaks to the isolation and agony endured.

NYDM band MALIGNANCY formed in 1992 in Yonkers performing songs centered around the grotesque nature of the human body and mutilation. Their 2007 Inhuman Grotesqueries has more of a focus on sickness and mutilation. INDIGENOUS PATHOGEN (third track) breaks down the birth and rapid multiplication of disease.

Multi-discipline artist; DIAMANDA GALAS, explores the many themes of sickness and mortality specifically with the AIDS/HIV epidemic of the 80s. Through despairing, technical and experimental sounds and lyrics, GALAS conveys the hopelessness, loss of hope and dignity and alienation that was so prevalent around the time.
