~ Silver, Artic Wolf, and Mint Chocolate Chip.

~ Pink/Yellow, Putu Bird, and Cotton Candy.

~ Light Brown, Tree Kangaroo, and Rum Raisin.

~ Green, Pig, and Cookie Dough.

This universe is very, very dark. It is very, very dead. Sometimes I think about that.

I think of every planet, every moon, every sun, abandoned or rendered silent by ancient wars. Every environment too toxic to wander, every building wherein I can hear as phantoms walk beside me; a constant echo of my own footsteps, just a moment behind. Every child left behind by conflict and strife, haunting every individual to step foot here. Because what is left to do?

I think of the machines and constructs and creatures made so clearly to protect, once. Why would a Nutcracker still march—why would it guard empty halls? Why would anything made for warfare know how to sing?

I think about these things. I think about, too, how I have found you. Life, peeking through the cracks. Eternally stubborn. Healing in the face of desolation. I didn’t think something like you could ever exist—not again.

And yet. There you were. Beautifully, unrelentingly alive. I held you in my hands for the first time and understood, years later, why Aureus had died for me. There was nothing else to do.

There was nothing else to do.

(You are able to fit into the palms of my hands at this age. You grow out of it very quickly, yet still I recall this. You are very, very young. You croak and whistle and rattle as I walk back ‘home’. I begin to think that this is what makes life worth living.)
