“Aren’t you?”

a/n; first lil short story like wtf? anyways i love pete x gary ship, the manipulator & the manipulated.

| very very gay, angst, if you don’t like gay stuff then leave, established relationship, again.. this is boyxboy.

The library was empty except for the rain hammering the windows and the soft thud of Pete’s heart in his ears.

Gary was pacing. Fast. Dangerous. Like a predator in a too-small cage.

“You don’t get it, do you?” Gary spat, arms slicing through the air like he could cut reality into something that made sense. “This whole place—these sheep—they need someone like me.”

Pete stayed seated, fingers clenched tight around the edge of the desk. “You’re not saving them, Gary. You’re just… hurting people.”

That made Gary laugh. Cold, echoing, ugly. “God, Petey. Don’t pretend you care about them. You didn’t even like them until Jimmy showed up.”

Pete flinched at that.

There it was again: Jimmy. The fracture line in everything.

Gary had grown sharper since the new kid arrived. Paranoid. Crueler. Like power had teeth and he was learning how to use them.

Pete stood, slowly, trying to meet Gary’s eyes. “You used to talk to me. You used to trust me.”

“I still trust you,” Gary said, but it sounded wrong — too fast, too defensive. “You’re the only one who doesn’t lie to me. The only one who stays.”

“Then why does it feel like I’m just another one of your moves?”

Silence.

Gary’s face flickered — just for a second — something raw underneath. Something real. Then he stepped back, building walls with every inch.

“You think I’m using you?” he whispered. “You?”

Pete’s voice cracked. “Aren’t you?”

Another beat of silence. Rain like static against the world outside. The kind of quiet where things end.

Gary didn’t answer. He just turned, walked to the door — then stopped, hand resting on the frame like he needed it to stay standing.

“When this is over,” he muttered, not turning back, “you’ll thank me. You’ll see I was right. You always do.”

“Gary—” Pete’s voice broke. He couldn’t say I love you. Not now. Not when it would sound like a leash or a trap or a plea.

Gary left.

And Pete stood alone in the ruins of what they never really had the chance to be.
