Even if you eat organic food, would never even think of spraying chemicals in your house, and religiously use canvas totes rather than plastic bags. Research shows that a frightening amount of health problems are related to, or caused by, stored toxins. In fact, a recent study at Columbia University School of Public Health estimates that 95% of cancer is caused by diet and exposure to toxins, and 90% of chronic diseases are caused by the environment. Translation: Chemicals you may have ingested or breathed or were inadvertently exposed to even decades ago are still being hoarded in your organs, fat cells and brain tissue. Even if you frequently fast. Or drink gallons of detox tea. Or sweat in the sauna after a good workout at your gym. Number One Yellow Split Pea and Spinach Body Healing Soup
Fall has started and many of us will start feeling the symptoms of a cold or flu and become a victim of the cold weather. Here is a delicious soup recipe for you! ¼ chopped green cabbage 1 bunch fresh spinach 1 medium carrot diced 1 medium onion sliced ½ cup of tomato sauce 1 teaspoon oregano leaves l½ teaspoon thyme leaves ½ teaspoon black pepper ½ teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon turmeric 8 cups water ½ cup yellow split peas 1 teaspoon ginger paste 1 tablespoon ghee/oil 1 teaspoon garlic paste Salt for taste Wash the spinach thoroughly, chop it into small pieces and set aside. Wash and rinse yellow split lentils and put aside. Heat the ghee/oil in a large pot on medium / high heat. Stir in curry powder and turmeric. When the ghee is hot, add garlic paste, ginger paste, and tomato sauce. Stir and cook for about 30 seconds. Add all the vegetables, salt, and water. Bring to a boil and lower the heat to a medium/low setting. Let it simmer for 15 minutes. Add black pepper. Mix and enjoy a big bowl of hot lentil and spinach soup! If you like a thin soup, then you may add one more cup of water. If cooking in a pressure cooker, follow the above instructions until you add water. Turn on the pressure cooker and close the lid. Once you hear the whistle, wait for two minutes then turn off the stove. Let the pressure cooker sit for 10 minutes to cool down. Open the lid very carefully, add a little more black pepper, stir, and your soup is ready to serve. Pour a big bowl for yourself and enjoy to your appetite. This hot soup helps clear your throat, cough, and cold. You may add any vegetable of your choice (chopped to preference) during the boiling process. If cooking in a pressure cooker, add all the ingredients before you close the lid. Also, do not get into a panic if any of the above-mentioned vegetables is not in your refrigerator. Substitutions are great – this is your soup! If you want you can make a large pot. The soup will stay good to eat for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Note: This soup reminds me of a memorable moment with my mom, which I still enjoy and appreciate. She used to make Yellow Split Pea & Spinach Soup very often and she called it ‘daal soup’. Whenever someone was sick in the family, my mother would always cook and blend the vegetables. She would serve one cup 4 times a day. She said, “When you eat this green soup, you become strong and healthy and you will never be afraid of any monster”. She would also say, “This hot soup gives you enormous energy and makes you intelligent”. Now when I cook, serve and consume this soup, I realize, she was right.

Herbal Remedies for Sore Throat, Congestion and Cough
There are many causes of sore throats, chest congestion or coughs. Such as a cold, flu, laryngitis, mouth breathing while sleeping, smoking, pollen or a number of other irritants. Sage kills bacteria, and is very soothing to mucus membranes, as well it breaks up your congestion. It can help eliminate that annoying cough that often accompanies a cold. The next time you develop a sore throat, chest congestion or a cough try using the sage remedies below. In a few days your throat or cough will be feeling better without the use of over the counter drugs. Sage Gargle (for sore throats) 1. Boil 1 cup of water. 2. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of rubbed sage, 1/8 – ¼ tsp. of salt, and empty 2 capsules of Echinacea into the mix. Echinacea is an anti-viral that also has a numbing effect. (Don’t buy Echinacea that’s combined with other herbs.) 3. Stir and let stand about 15 minutes. 4. Stir again, and pour through a strainer (keep this) into another cup. 5. Reheat as hot as you can tolerate. You can test it on your lips. 6. Gargle deeply into your throat, 2 or 3 times. It’s best not to eat or drink for a little while, so you don’t dilute the effect. Put the strained material back in the liquid, cover and store in the refrigerator. You can reheat it for about 2 days. Reheat in the microwave for 2 minutes on medium heat) Remember to strain it before gargling! Don’t stop completely until at least a day after your symptoms subside. Sage Steam (for chest congestion or cough) 1. Take a big pot with 2″ of water in it, add 2 Heaping Tablespoons of Rubbed Sage (right out of your spice rack, if it’s not too old!) 2. If you’re sick (cold or flu), add 4 capsules of Echinacea for an extra anti-viral boost. (Don’t buy Echinacea that’s combined with other herbs) 3. Bring to a boil, stir, then simmer (med-low) for 15 minutes. (Stir occasionally) 4. Bring the temp back up (almost) to a boil again. Now it’s ready. 1. Put a towel over your head (to trap the steam), and your head over the pot. Steam can burn, so be careful. 2. Inhale the steam deeply into your lungs (even if it makes you cough terribly) through your mouth, then your nose. 3. Do this as long as you can stand it (5 min.). Set aside to use later. I make a fresh pot each day that it’s needed. Have the tissues close! For best results, steam 3-6 times a day while you’re ill. Obviously, you can back off as you begin to feel better. Don’t stop completely until at least a day after your symptoms subside.

Getting Healthy: If at First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again
The problem-solving techniques we may use for other areas of life including work, school, parenting, and business can often fall short when it comes to feeling better in health. For example, you may hear that gluten elimination definitely helps solve fatigue, but when you try it, you’re still tired. Or maybe you hear that a specific treatment helps resolve acne, but that doesn’t happen in your particular case. At a certain point, it can become tempting to give up. It’s helpful to recognize that when it comes to health, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Keeping an open mind about your body’s unique process of healing can be more helpful in the long-run than seeking an instant and magical cure, whether it be a lifestyle modification, natural supplement, or pharmaceutical drug. Health is inherently a journey, involving ups, downs, and plateaus along the way. When any treatment is prioritized ahead of who you are as a living breathing individual, and what you’re going through, it has less chance to take hold no matter what it is. Next time you feel like throwing in the towel when your health efforts don’t work, keep in mind these points: 1) Symptoms sometimes get worse before they get better. The body has its own equilibrium no matter what state of health you’re in, and it’s called “homeostasis.” Once you begin a new treatment, it takes time for the treatment to exert effects on the state of equilibrium your body has been maintaining. As these changes take place and you pay more attention to how you’re feeling, the body gets a chance to fully express symptoms that you may have been suppressing or too busy to notice before. Allowing the healing process to unfold naturally can help in the long-run. 2) A treatment that doesn’t work right now may work later. Sometimes when we try a new method for self-care or treatment, we may not be ready to feel better just yet. The readiness for action has to catch up to our desire to feel better. Going through the motions of “doing the right thing for health” is different from really taking care of yourself. Taking care of yourself takes patience. Sometimes you have to face difficult thoughts or emotions along the way in order to remove obstacles toward better health. Are you ready to feel better? 3) It takes practice to strike a rhythm with your health. Trying something only once, in terms of treatments or healthy living measures, may not be fair to your health. Achieving anything in life, including health, involves practice, patience, and learning. When you give yourself a chance to practice better health rather than forcing results on yourself, you increase your likelihood of feeling better. 4) Try to stay creative in your health routines. Not all “healthy stuff” has to be cumbersome. Try and tailor health care to your preferences, keeping in mind what you enjoy and what might lead to consistency. If a technique hasn’t been working, maybe a new and creative spin on it can make a difference. For example, if you’re stuck in your same exercise routine, try a new setting or different music. The less it feels like a chore, the higher the chances of you keeping up with it. It’s not always about the perfect treatment or technique. Give yourself a fair shake to make a real connection with your health and your body. That connection will open up doors to health, make your health efforts more effective, and create long-lasting healing.

Pain for Peace
What are you suffering from? Is it emotional pain? Emotional pain can be the hardest to manage because we do it silently. It is the “invisible” pain. And it’s not for wimps! Or maybe you have the easy to spot, completely not invisible physical pain. A pain that causes you to walk with a limp, or hold your low back, sit or stand with a grimace on your face. Physical pain is something everyone can see you have and it is not for wimps either! If only we could trade our pain for peace. Oh, wouldn’t that be nice? To suddenly live with less pain and more peace would be such a relief. We would live differently, smile more, think more and just overall, be more to ourselves and to those who love us. We would remember the pain we had with respect and embrace our new found peace with joy and comfort we find in an old friend. Well, maybe we can trade pain for peace and have our body and mind back! How can we accomplish this you say? First, think positive. Think positive, happy thoughts as if your life depended on it. This means smile – a lot! This is the invisible part of pain we have all mastered. That happy face you put on every morning, or afternoon because you were in too much pain to roll out of bed with the rest of the family and that’s OK. The smile I’m suggesting isn’t for everyone else, it is for YOU! Look in the mirror and smile because today if the first day of peace. That sounds nice, doesn’t it? Second, look in that mirror again and tell the person looking back at you “I am letting go of pain today because I want peace in my body instead”. That’s right, you are going to tell the pain to leave and the peace to come on in! Welcome peace! Third, walk away from the mirror and wait for it to happen. Remember pain of any kind isn’t for wimps, so when you feel pain coming on, tell it to go away because you want peace instead. You have been dealing with this pain for a long time and it is time to take control! Positive talk therapy has been proven to reduce negative thoughts and pressures by re-training the brain to think in a positive way about a negative situation. James Clear writes in Behavioral Psychology, “… It requires a minimum of about 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to gel”. So keep checking that mirror and keep smiling. Your new image will appear and the old painful image of yourself will disappear. According to Phillipia Lally, a researcher at the University of Chicago London, some changes may take up to 66 days on average to become habit (“How Long Does it Actually Take to Form a New Habit? Backed by Science,” n.d.). Once the negative image dissolves, the habit will begin to form. So stay with it, keep telling the pain to leave and the peace to come and in time, you will notice you think about the pain less often and have more room in your life for peace.

Autoimmune Disorders – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment
Autoimmune disorders are diseases in which the immune system of the body attacks normal healthy tissue and produces different symptoms of diseases. Nearly 160 diseases are listed as autoimmune disorders; common ones include rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, alopecia areata, SLE, thyroiditis, Addison’s disease, pernicious anaemia, celiac disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Guillain Barre Syndrome. A genetic predisposition is usually required for the commencement of autoimmune disorders, along with environmental triggers such as infections (bacteria, virus), food allergies, toxins (drugs, smoking, hair dyes, and chemicals) and physical trauma. Common symptoms include joint and muscle pain, general muscle weakness, rashes, low-grade fever, lack of concentration, weight loss, numbness and tingling, dry eyes, hair loss, breathlessness, and palpitations. The hallmark of autoimmune disorders is inflammation, which can affect the heart, brain, lungs, nerves, muscles, skin, eyes, joints, kidneys, glands (thyroid, pancreas etc.) and produce symptoms according to the organ and tissue affected. The modern system of treatment of autoimmune diseases is by suppressing the immunity with the use of steroids or non steroid medicines such as cyclophosphamide, and vaccines where possible. This treatment can give good results on a short-term basis but it does not cure the autoimmune disease and can result in serious side effects later on. Ayurvedic treatment scores positively in this aspects because it brings about immunomodulation so that the body defence system can gradually take over and help cure the disease completely. This may possibly take more time; immuno-suppressants can bring about improvement of symptoms within a few weeks to a few months, while Ayurvedic treatment may be required from a few months to a few years, depending upon the severity and complexity of the disease. As mentioned earlier, inflammation is the hallmark of all autoimmune diseases. Steroids can treat inflammation very well; however, the long-term side effects of steroids can be as serious – or probably more serious – than the disease itself. Ayurvedic herbal medicines can significantly reduce pain and inflammation in chronic rheumatoid arthritis. Itching and recurrence of psoriasis can be treated very well with Ayurvedic treatment. Herbs can effectively treat inflammation of glands such as that occurs in thyroiditis, or inflammation and destruction of arteries, nerves, mucosa, muscles, connective tissue and skin such as that occurring in SLE, celiac disease, scleroderma, multiple sclerosis, Guillain Barre Syndrome etc. While steroids and immunosuppressants are common therapy for all autoimmune disorders, the Ayurvedic treatment for each autoimmune disease varies considerably according to the body organs or systems affected. Medical protocol for treatment will also vary considerably according to the severity of symptoms, as well as the treatment response of affected individuals. Most medicines which act on the ‘Rakta’, ‘Mansa’, ‘Med’, and ‘Majja’ tissues are effective in the treatment of autoimmune disorders. These include herbs like Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), and Patol (Tricosanthe dioica). Immunomodulating herbs are also quite important for treating autoimmune diseases and include Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis). Most affected individuals on immuno-suppressants experience a relapse or flare-up after about 5 to 6 months of therapy. Ayurvedic treatment may bring about improvement within 4 to 6 months; however the slow improvement is worth it since the patient start going into a full remission and the disease can be completely controlled with regular therapy of 12 to 24 months. After this, medicines can be gradually tapered and stopped completely. Further treatment can be given as short courses as and when – or if – required. Ayurvedic treatment can thus be utilized successfully to provide a comprehensive treatment for most of the common autoimmune disorders.
