How I raised my grades by a whole letter in the finals weeks
First of all, I would just like to mention that I do not encourage leaving your studying on the finals week. It’s terrible for your mental health and academic life. That being said, last semester was hard. I lost a loved one. I was at a very bad state mentally and I ended up not doing well on my midterms. I even failed a few homeworks. I managed to do well on my projects which was a help to my falling grades. And even though I had a near perfect attendance, engineering classes don’t count that toward your grade.
So when the classes ended and the reading period began, I had no choice but to do not just well, but stellar on them.
Without further ado here are my suggestions for such a time.
1. Prepare yourself mentally
You need to get into a good mental state. ingrain in yourself that you will have plenty time to rest and chill in a week but right now you gotta grind. When I was planning my reading period. The only times I scheduled besides studying were for eating and sleeping. I did take short breaks in between but majority of my day was devoted to studying. I had to make up for everything I hadn’t done during the semester.
2. Read chapter summaries
You probably don’t have the time to read the whole textbook. So, the best thing to do in this case is to read the summaries behind chapters and only read those sections that you’re completely clueless about.
3. Redo all homeworks
Doing homeworks saved me. Especially for engineering classes where you need to nail the concept and then all problems are solvable.
4. Make cheat sheets
Even if it’s not allowed on the test, making a cheat sheet is great practice. Do it once you have reviewed a big portion of the coursework. Add all the key points and even important solved problems on it.
5. Go outside your room
For me this meant, going the library at around noon and staying their until midnight. I took some snacks and coffee with me and it really helped.
6. Don’t do study groups
At this point, studying on your own would be most helpful. Since everyone’s familiar with the material at a different level. Any study session longer than two hours would only waste your time.
7. Do sample papers
Besides the one that your professors post, find sample exams from other professors or schools. They’re really helpful. More than anything else, they help you see what part of the material you need to review more.
