Hanako’s seal
So recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the seal on Hanako’s cheek. It’s such an important detail of Hanako’s character design, yet it’s only been referenced twice in the 128 chapters currently available.
We know Kou’s grandmother sealed Hanako…

And Kou is absolutely convinced Hanako-san is an evil spirit, he’s not making assumptions, he’s literally been told about how evil Hanako is.
And it makes me wonder: where did these stories come from?
The Hanako we know is not evil. A bit shady for sure, but he’s definitely not evil.
I started to think about Yako as I thought about this. When she describes how it was like to go berserk, she says this:

“It was definitely still me.”
And as Hanako listens to her explaination, he silently touches his seal, the first and only time he aknowledges its presence.

Do you want to know who else is still themselves, even if they possessed and warped?

Cursed Amane is still Amane, even when Nene tries so hard to deny it, she can’t.

Cursed Amane is in a pitiful state, he is himself, but he’s unaware he’s most likely dead and is possessed by an evil god. He doesn’t know he’s used to kill so many people.
It reminds me of how Teru describes Hanako.

“Goes unstable at the drop of a hat.”
The imagery of the black circle in Hanako’s body also looks very familiar…

All this makes me wonder: is the curse sealed within Hanako?
Did he used to be another puppet for the pit? And when he became “unstable” it was because he was being controlled?
I don’t know the answer for sure, but omg would this explain a lot. It explains why Hanako was sealed, why it took so much of Kou’s grandmother’s strength to do it and why Hanako never asked Nene to remove his seal.
#def need to reread the manga bc theres so many details that may have been foreshadowed like this one#and we just thought it was aesthetic#it makes sense bc unlike other supernaturals only hanako was sealed?#so whatever possessed hanako back then was that BAD and its only the pit god that makes sense to be the cause#grrr so many thoughts on this one#tbhk#jshk

Well this just took a dark turn. I was rereading chapter 119 and came across this gem:
On Amane's 4th birthday, someone told him the future changed...
Are we about to witness this event in the next chapter??? Is this somehow what ultimately leads little Amane to growing up, becoming a teacher and becoming part of the curse??
#ABBEY WELCOME BACK#their 4th birthday really is a turning point in history huh...#good eye on catching this one!!#tbhk#jshk

When I talk about how contemporary American neurodeterminist cultural attitudes are new, how they came about within my adult lifetime, how for the overwhelming bulk of human societies around the globe and throughout history they would have been considered ridiculous...
My point is literally never. Ever. Ever. "Retvrn to a better time."
I am not saying that other times/places/cultural norms about young people and neurodivergent people were ever BETTER.
I am saying that contemporary American attitudes are presented as objective, biological neurological reality, and they simply are not.
When I say "In 1950, a 25-year-old mother sending her 6-year-old child on an errand by himself would have been the most unremarkable thing in the world," I am not saying "Child-rearing and family life were better overall in 1950 than in 2025" because that is transparently false. That kid probably went to a segregated school and got polio. Everything was terrible.
What I am saying is "The fact that the abilities of a 6-year-old errand-runner or a 19-year-old new parent were assumed sufficient in a different cultural context is irrefutable proof that those presumed inabilities in our current culture are not in fact Biological Truths."

nene yashiro will always be my favorite manga/anime protagonist because literally no one is doing it like her. she's such a wonderful character. i always love the ones that take a really common stereotype for women or girls and flip it to make it much better and more interesting and nene is one of my favorite examples.. i love that she's so focused on romance but it feels more like a character trait than sexism because she's just so earnest about it. those kinds of emotions are completely congruent with the rest of her character and so it adds to her instead of detracting from her.
but also, she just loves herself so sincerely. she's so well adjusted that the story's conflict comes from her being too normal rather than too weird. she's insecure especially near the beginning but she never seems to be ashamed of the person that she is -- she feels remorse when her actions lead to something bad but she's not riddled with guilt over it; she dislikes her legs and her bust size but she focuses less on it as the series progresses. she develops as a character but her personality barely changes because 1) she's resilient and 2) she loves herself, in every sense of the word. she values who she is now rather than wanting badly to change.
maybe she's not super popular with boys but she has friends and people she's familiar with, she's kind, and friendly: she's just some girl, and the story works so well because she's so normal. she's scared of bugs, she's not very good at school (at least enough that she had to worry about remedial classes), she does foolish things, she's reckless and impulsive. she's only fifteen, and she's not used to this world, so what more would you expect from her? but she manages to survive through everything, she continues trying knowing she's going to die, she believes that everything will be okay as it is because she is stronger than she ever thought she could be. it's less that she changes as a person and more that she recognizes parts of her that she couldn't see before. i love you nene yashiro
#nene is special to me bc she has every reason to despair but she remains hopeful#she'll always choose to believe in herself and whats right#yashiro nene#tbhk#jshk
