10 Skills Every Homesteader Should Know

In this post we’re going to cover the top 10 essential skills that every homesteader should master in order to live a more self-sufficient lifestyle in 2024 and beyond. Homesteading isn’t an easy way of life. Doing everything yourself, and practicing traditional life skills may not have been something you were taught about growing up and it could be a daunting challenge to learn, but it is still very rewarding. Plus, it can help you become less dependent on an increasingly unhealthy and unreliable supply chain in a broken society. So, here they are, in no particular order of importance, the top 10 essential skills for you to learn as a homesteader:

Gardening

Number one is gardening; knowing how to grow your own food is a crucial skill for any homesteader to learn. This includes understanding how to choose the right plants for your climate, how to prepare the soil, and how to care for and protect your plants against pests and environmental factors. If you can learn to garden well, you will be light years ahead of everyone else in terms of self-reliance.

Animal Care

Next is animal care. Many homesteaders keep animals for food, milk, and other derivative products like fertilizer or leather. It’s important to learn how to care for these animals well, including how to feed them, groom them, and provide for their basic needs. Add successful breeding and raising those animals from birth and later processing them humanely, and you’ll have a practically endless supply of healthy animals and animal products for your family to enjoy for years to come!

Building With Natural Materials

Natural-building with natural materials like earth, stone, and wood can be more sustainable and cost-effective than using modern, industrialized materials from the big construction stores. It’s worth learning how to build with natural materials, whether it’s a cobb oven, a simple wood shed, a massive hand hewn log home, or a post and beam barn made from local materials right from your homestead.

Water Management

Water is a precious resource and it’s important to know exactly how to collect, store, and purify it for use. This can include installing a rainwater harvesting system, drilling a well, building a cistern, or installing a water tank, using a water filter surface flow management of streams and creeks, or even developing a complex pond ecosystem. It can add dividends to any well-managed homestead. Remember, water is life and without it, you simply won’t succeed.

Energy Management

Next is energy management. Homesteaders often rely on renewable energy sources, like solar panels, or wind and hydroelectric turbines. It’s well worth learning how to install and maintain these systems, as well as how to use the energy they generate most efficiently. It’s also important to learn how to manage and use traditional fuel sources, like firewood or even coal, if you’re fortunate enough to have affordable access to those materials on your homestead.

First Aid and Medical Treatment

First aid and medical treatment is also very important. Accidents happen, and it’s important to be prepared. Knowing basic first aid skills can mean the difference between a minor injury and a life-threatening emergency. But under today’s strained medical system, it can also be vital to go beyond those basic skills and learn the advanced medical treatments so often

employed by First Responders and Nurse Practitioners. It could literally save you or your family members’ lives when the healthcare system fails you, or when it tries to force objectionable procedures or medicines on you.

Natural Medicine

Going along with the above one on the list is natural medicine. There are many natural remedies that can be used to treat common ailments and medical conditions. Learning about useful herbs, essential oils, and other natural remedies can help you take care of your family’s health in a more holistic way, that avoids the toxic chemicals so often forced on us by a commercialized medical system out to make a quick buck, without considering the consequences for us.

Food Preservation

Next is food preservation. There are many ways to preserve food, including canning, drying, and freezing, among others. Learning these skills and obtaining the tools you need to do that can help you make the most of your harvest and ensure that you have a steady supply of food throughout the year, not just in the summer. After all, what good is being able to grow your own food if you can’t preserve it to eat later when you actually need it?

It can also ensure you have something to trade with others if the need ever arises.

Sewing, Mending, and Making Textiles

Sewing and mending is another essential skill. Knowing how to sew and mend your clothing can save you money on purchasing and repairs. Plus, it can allow you to customize your clothing and home goods. We’ve gotten really spoiled by cheap clothing from overseas for many years now.

But what if you could make customized clothing and accessories that didn’t wear out so easily and could serve you well for many years to come? You can even learn traditional methods of textile making, like spinning wool or weaving, knitting, crocheting, and many more related skills.

Basic Carpentry and Construction

Basic carpentry is an essential homesteading skill. Something like building a bookshelf or fixing a leaking roof can save you money on repairs and allow you to customize your living environment to your particular needs. It can also unlock your creative potential on building projects for simpler living, whether it’s a custom coat rack for your mudroom or a hardwood canning shelf for your pantry.

Without some sort of business sense and bargaining skills, homesteading will never become more than just an expensive hobby that you quickly burn out on. Don’t Waste Money on College. Do This Instead.

Well folks, it’s time to talk about the elephant in the room; college degrees, and specifically how Google Professional Certificates are making most of them irrelevant. That’s right, the diploma that you work tirelessly for, that symbol of education that you wear proudly on your wall, it’s great, it’s fantastic! Unless of course, you end up drowning in student loan debt, and you can’t find a job in your field. But don’t worry, because I have a solution for you– enter Google Certificates! Let’s dive into 7 of the best Google Certificates for 2024:

Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Professional Certificate

This certificate is a beginner-level course. It has a 4.8 out of five star rating. They say that you can get done with it in around 6 months or so, with about 10 hours of studying per week, but self-reporting shows you can get done with it much faster than that. Keep in mind, the phrase “digital marketing” actually comprises a bunch of different sub-fields, such as SEO, which is search engine optimization, pay-per-click or PPC, search engine marketing, email marketing, etc. If you type in “digital marketing” on LinkedIn at the entry level, you are going to see 68,000 results, and on Glassdoor they make about $68,000 a year. Keep in mind, this is the Google Professional Certificate that’s hosted on Coursera.

Google IT Automation Certificate

This certificate says you’re going to learn in-demand skills like Python, git, and IT automation, in order to advance your career. So you are going to learn a little bit of coding. It’s not too advanced on the coding, because I know that scares a lot of people, but it’s specifically going to be applied to IT or information technology.

It has a score of 4.8 out of 5 with over 30,000 ratings. Again, it says it can be completed in about 6 months, but all the self-reporting shows that it can be done much quicker than that, usually somewhere between 2 to 3 months, on average. According to Google, there’s over 530,000 US job postings that have something to do with Python proficiency, and over 75,000 of those are entry-level jobs. There’s a ton of different jobs you can go into with this skill set. One of them would be a Junior System Administrator. There’s about 12,000 results at the entry-level, but like I said, there’s a ton of other jobs out there, and you’d make about $63,000 a year.

Google Associate Android Developer Certificate

This certificate isn’t technically a Google Professional Certificate. They essentially did this in association with Android, but I decided to include this on the list because I do think there’s a ton of demand for people who have this skill set. For instance, 95% of the top 1,000 Android apps contain Kotlin code and Kotlin is exactly what you’re going to be learning. There’s a bunch of different career paths you could go into. I’ll just discuss one of them– Mobile Application Development shows 3,800 results on LinkedIn at the entry-level and if you type that into Glassdoor, you’re going to see $80,000 a year.

Google UX Design Professional Certificate

UX stands for user experience and this certificate claims that in less than 6 months you can be prepared for an entry-level job in UX Design. This one scores 4.8 out of five stars with over 56,000 ratings. Again, this is one of those where it says 6 months, but realistically speaking, you can do it faster than that.

However, this is one of the more intense Google Professional Certificates. I’d say this is a little harder than a lot of the other ones on the list, but it is going to help you to get your portfolio together. There are 999,000 in-demand job openings in UX Design. This is one thing I forgot to mention, but with all these certificates, when you complete them, you get access to a private job board that over 150 large and well-respected companies agreed to hire people from.

Another thing that’s really great about these certificates, this is actually probably the best perk and almost nobody talks about it, is that you actually get to list these on your LinkedIn. A secret that a lot of people don’t know is you don’t actually have to finish them. You don’t actually have to be done with them in order to list them on LinkedIn and recruiters and hiring managers can find you through these certificates, so you can just say that you’re in the process of taking it and when they search the certificate they may find you.

There’s a ton of different jobs out there that you could potentially go into. One of them is Interaction Designer on LinkedIn at the entry level. There’s about 2,900 results and if you type that in on Glassdoor you’re going to see $110,000 a year. So if you’re somebody who is really interested in art, and you don’t want to keep it as a hobby, you want to do it as a profession– you actually want to get a job doing artistic-related things, this can be a really good choice for you.

Google Project Management Professional Certificate

This certificate is a really good one, as well, that’s another super valuable skill set. It is beginner level, it says that it takes about 6 months, but again, you can do it much quicker than that. It has a score of 4.8 out of five with over 71,000 ratings. They say there’s 479,000 in-demand job openings in Project Management. This is a super valuable skill set that is never going to go away. In fact, I would say Project Management is just going to keep growing as the years go on. If you type in Project Manager on LinkedIn at the entry level you are going to see over 70,000 results and on Glassdoor they say Project Managers make about $84,000 a year.

Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate

This certificate claims you’re going to be job ready for a Data Analytics role in about 6 months. It has a score of 4.8 out of 5 with over

98,000 ratings. One of the great things about these Google Professional Certificates is you can do it all on your own time, you don’t have to quit your job, or move across the country to go to college. According to them, there’s over 380,000 in-demand job openings for Data Analytics and by the way, this is another one that I didn’t mention, but over 75 percent of graduates in the US claim an improvement in their career path.

And this is all within 6 months of certificate completion. That is phenomenal, considering these certificates, last time I checked, only cost around $39 per month. So you compare that to basically any other way of getting educated or you know, trying to get into a job. For instance, colleges which cost about $100,000 for a college degree or going to a boot camp, which is probably going to cost you at least $10,000, this is a ridiculous value, this is basically a cheat code at this point.

I don’t know how long this is going to last, maybe after it gets saturated or whatever, it’s not going to be as valuable, but right now, people have been reporting to me left and right that this is getting phenomenal results. According to LinkedIn, there are 50,000 results at the entry-level for a Data Analyst position, which is great, and according to Glassdoor, Data Analysts make about $71,000 a year.

Google IT Support Professional Certificate

This is probably the most well-known Google certificate out there. It has a score of 4.8 out of five stars with 151,000 ratings. That is a ton of people who have taken the certificate and rated it extremely well! It also says it takes around 6 months to take it, but again realistically speaking, it’s much quicker than that. In fact, for this particular one, a lot of people have told me they’ve been able to knock it out sometimes in a few weeks, a month, a month and a half, or 2 months.

On the listing, it says there’s about 400,000 in-demand job openings in it. A Help Desk position is probably the easiest job to land. Type it into LinkedIn and see how much demand there is. For instance, Database Administrator got 128,000 results at the entry level and you make about $84,000 a year. System Analyst got 146,000 results at the entry level and you make $87,000 a year.

Get Hired At One Of These Remote Jobs Always Hiring!

I’ve got 15 remote job companies that you have never seen before that are always hiring! These are work-from-home or remote positions. These companies specifically are going to be hiring for entry-level positions.

So you’re going to be able to go into this whether you have a ton of experience or you have no experience at all. If you appreciate me doing these types of articles, sign up here to catch every story when I publish.

Sarnova

Sarnova is a US healthcare company, and they’re a distributor of healthcare products for EMS, fire departments, police forces, nurses, and hospital staff.

The reason I included this one on the list is because I only find the best stuff for you guys and this company won an award for the 2023 Great Place To Work certification and they won it for the third year in a row.

Some of the highlights here are the work that you do makes a difference in saving lives.

Also, there are going to be great benefits, like flex PTO, hybrid work-from-home schedule, full suite of health and wellness benefits, 401K, matching tuition reimbursement, adoption assistance, and let’s not forget about pet insurance.

One of the remote jobs that they often hire for is going to be a Customer Care Representative. This position makes between $36,000 and $46,000 a year.

There are a lot of other options at this company that are not entry-level, such as a Sales Account Manager that makes between $83,000 and $136,000 a year, or an E-commerce Merchandiser who makes about $56,000 to $85,000 a year.

They have some great ratings online, so it’s a good one to look into, especially if you want to work in the healthcare industry and especially if you want to get a remote job; here are some jobs that are available right now.

Reminder Media

Reminder Media works with business owners and sales professionals to streamline their client contact process. They focus on eliminating concerns about reaching out to clients and following up with leads.

The company’s goal is to create tools and services that automate your marketing process. This company has a Better Business Bureau A+ rating and it’s one of the top 5,000 incorporated companies.

This is an up-and-coming company and they have some great benefits. They have health insurance, they offer an HSA account, which is awesome, they offer college loan refinancing, which, as we all know, a lot of Americans need, and they offer a good amount of paid time off.

Some of the jobs that they often hire for are going to be Remote Call Center which make around $65,000 to $120,000 a year, Inside Sales where you can make about $65,000 to $120,000 a year, and Phone Sales which will make about $65,000 to $120,000 a year. They also have some great ratings online.

Triplepoint PR

Triplepoint PR is a communications agency that offers extensive PR or public relations services including Media Relations Influencer, Marketing Event Management, etc. They have an extensive list of well-known clients. They work with Blizzard, Meta, Pokemon, Mario Brothers, and Sega.

They offer a good amount of bonuses, for one, a lot of their workers are remote, there’s profit sharing and bonuses, you get insurance, vacation, 401K matching, and you also receive a corporate Mastercard for any business-related expenses that you have.

Depending on your position, you may get to travel to different industry-related events.

They hire for several different positions, such as Account Coordinators who make about $42,000 to $56,000 a year, Account Executives who make about $61,000 to $100,000 a year and other associates who make about $46,000 to $78,000 a year.

They also have really good ratings online and that’s why I included them on this list.

R1 RCM

R1 RCM is a leading provider of technology-driven solutions that enhance the financial performance and patient experience of healthcare organizations and this is an up-and-coming company that has over 28,000 employees.

They have pretty good benefits. Some of the remote jobs they hire for are going to be Follow-up Associates who make about $32,000 to $42,000 a year, Junior Recruiters who make around $48,000 to $72,000 a year and Patient Access Associates who make about $36,000 to $52,000 a year.

Onbe

Onbe is a fintech company that specializes in modernizing and managing business-to-business individual disbursements. They focus on fast, convenient, and versatile payment solutions.

This company has won a bunch of different employee-related accolades, such as getting on the list of Built-In Best Places To Work Textio 2022, Growth Mindset Award, The Goldie Awards, Silver Winner for the Golden Bridge Awards, the Globy Awards, Golden Winner for the Women In Business Award, the Stevie Award for 2022, International Businesses and the Stevie award 2023 for sales and customer service.

They have industry-leading benefits, 13 paid holidays, unlimited paid time off, you can work from anywhere, parental leave for up to 15 weeks, they offer a great HSA, and of course, they have wellness benefits.

They have a 4.4-star rating on Glassdoor, which is awesome, and 93% of the employees approve of the CEO. One of the jobs that I saw them hiring for was Associate Java Engineer.

They make about $110,000 a year, plus bonuses, Client Support Specialist who makes about $49,000 to $61,000 a year with eligibility for an annual bonus and Fraud Investigations Associate who makes about $47,000 to $63,000 a year, plus bonuses.

Focus Forward

Focus Forward hires in the US, as well as worldwide, and they provide a wide range of research services, such as recruitment, transcription, translation, and coding.

What they do is pay people who are in your company’s target demographic to do focus groups or to take surveys.

This is going to be one of the easier ones to get hired for and one of the positions that they often hire people for is going to be a Market Research Interviewer, and they get paid around $15 an hour.

They also hire transcribers who get paid around 40 cents per audio minute. This is another really good one to look into, especially if you’re just trying to get into a really quick entry-level position.

Enterprise Mobility

Enterprise Mobility is a transportation-focused, family-owned business and it operates across 100 different companies with a large fleet of trucks. They’ve got a ton of different awards.

This is one of those companies that’s pretty good, and they take their reputation very seriously.

Maximus

Maximus specializes in offering transformative technology services. They essentially focus on digital customer experiences and clinical health services.

They’ve won a ton of different awards, so they’re very well recognized and respected. They have a ton of different company benefits.

Some of the remote jobs they typically hire for are going to be a Trainer who makes around $16 to $36 per hour, a Customer Advocacy Specialist who makes about $42,000 to $50,000 a year, a Software Systems Engineer that makes $42,000 to $100,000 a year, and a Proposal Writer which makes $42,000 to $90,000 a year.

This company also has really good ratings online, of course, I try to only include companies that have good employee satisfaction scores.

Nelnet

Nelnet is a company that services and takes care of student loans. They do other stuff outside of that, like insurance, financing, and other types of financial-related services, but the student loan thing is what they’re well known for.

They have a lot of awesome perks and benefits.

Some of the remote jobs they often hire for are going to be Nelnet Customer Service Advisor who makes about $16.20 per hour, plus an extra dollar per hour if you can speak Spanish, a First Mark Customer Service Advisor who would be making about $14 an hour and a Value Added Services Implementation Specialist which makes between $44,000 to $48,000 a year.

Vanguard

They hire people in the US, Australia, and Great Britain. Vanguard is an extremely well-respected investment company that provides a wide range of different financial services.

They’ve received a bunch of different awards throughout the years They have a ton of different benefits and perks. One of the remote jobs they often hire for is going to be a Client Service Excellence Representative and they get paid about $56,000 to $63,000 a year.

Sinch

Sinch is a company that hires in the US and worldwide. This is a company that specializes in customer communication.

They offer a cloud-based platform that enables businesses to engage in meaningful conversations with their customers across various channels like messaging, voice, and email.

They’ve won a lot of awards and they’ve got some pretty good benefits.

Some of the remote jobs Sinch hires for are going to be Accounts Payable Specialist at about $23 an hour, Application Support Administrator at $17 to $23 an hour, as well as a Customer Support Specialist who makes about $36,000 to $45,000 a year.

Sedgwick

Sedgwick offers risk and benefit solutions helping businesses and their employees with health, productivity, and claims management. The company operates globally, providing tailored support in various sectors like property.

They offer revisions within 24 hours and they have a customer satisfaction guarantee. What they say is these are copy-editing services for those who care about perfection.

They’re kind of positioning themselves as a premium brand. Not only do they let you work from home, but they also let you work flexible hours, so you get to determine your availability.

This one is probably going to be better for people who live outside of first-world, English-speaking countries because the pay rate is going to be a bit low for the US, so this is going to be a better opportunity for people who live outside of the US.

They don’t say exactly how much they pay, but there are some estimates online that they probably pay around $5 to $10 per hour.
