Racially Insensitive Social Media
After reflecting on the content of this week’s MCO 435 reading and assignments, it’s abundantly clear on how social media affects more than our lives on the web. Of course, I have always been aware of this, however, my perspective on it has completely changed. Social media is uncovering the prevalent issues in today’s society that may have been buried or neglected prior to this digital era. For example, racism in America ‘seemingly’ ended for most people after the civil rights movement. Or in reality, it never really ended. Maybe over the past couple decades, Americans have been unaware of the still prevalent racism issues because we didn’t have social media connecting the world in ways that it does. Social media gives the average person a voice to connect with people they would have never met. It creates communities of people with similar interests and common goals. Therefore, social media has opened the door for people to shed light on issues that are going on.
I’ve also heard that it is “the media that creates racism.” The media cannot create something out of nothing. Racism is clearly still an issue thanks to the plethora of racially insensitive content on the web and social media platforms.

Prime example of an ignorant, racist and completely inappropriate social media post. Not only is this offensive, but it demonstrates the user’s lack of sensitivity and knowledge. I’d also like to point out that the hashtag, “#yournotamerican” is using the incorrect form of “you are,” therefore creates an even deeper lack of credibility. The poster is also using a stereotype to create his judgement about the singer, yet, he has no idea whether the singer is actually American, he is simply just basing his opinion on the boy’s race.

There's been no study of how early support on social media affects a presidential race, in part because there have only been two presidential races in the era of social media.
Phillip Bump, Washington Post
This is an interesting point. There has ONLY been two presidential elections in the social media era, which leads me to believe that we have no idea of the true potential and power social media can have in the presidential race. With each election we will learn more about social media’s true affect on the race.

In fewer than 140 characters, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) announced his 2016 presidential campaign. It looks like Twitter and other social media platforms will play an essential role in the 2016 presidential election.

I want to be the 7 am forehead kisses, the 9 am cuddles, the 10 am breakfasts. I want to be the 12 pm out to lunch and the 1 pm hugs from behind. I want to be the 3 pm naps together and the 4 pm giggles. I want to be the 6 pm dinners and the 7 pm desserts, in which we have a whipped cream fight. I want to be the 9 pm movies on HBO and the 10 pm yawns. I want the 11 pm snuggles and 12 pm heavy breathing. I want to be the 1 am wake ups to whisper “I love you,” and drift off to sleep. I want to be the 3 am, where you wake me up and we make love. I want to be the 4 am talk about anything and everything. And I want to do it all over again, everyday. I want to be your everything, your forever, your one and only.
