here's a short interview w/ me from HRDCVR.

We welcome Kristen Yoonsoo Kim to HRDCVR as Content Fellow!
site: kristenyoonsoo.tumblr.com | tweets: @kristenyoonsoo | born: Daejeon, South Korea | live: Brooklyn, NY | school: New York University
Why HRDCVR?
HRDCVR walked into my life at the perfect time. When I joined in mid-October, I was on the editorial team at Myspace and going through a lot of changes at work (I had just lost my boss, who is now fellow HRDCVR team member, Benjamin Meadows-Ingram—hi Ben!). I missed having Ben as an editor and mentor, but more than that, I felt like I wasn’t being challenged enough at my job. Don’t get me wrong: Myspace has been one of the best experiences of my life, and I’ve probably learned more there than anywhere else. But I just came to a point where I was like, ‘What next?’ HRDCVR was that what next for me. This stuff is really challenging at times—mostly because we’re all figuring out new things on our own—but I love working with such a supportive staff of people who are all so smart and passionate.
How would you define HRDCVR?
Quite literally it’s a hardcover magazine, but it means so much more: It’s a time capsule, a yearbook, a conversation, and a diverse collection of different voices and stories.
You’ve worked at Myspace, Vice, Sad Girls Guide, which are almost all exclusively on the Internet. Why make the jump to print with something like HRDCVR?
I’ve always been in love with print. I like reading physical books and magazines (sorry, no Kindle switchover for me in the near future). As cheesy as it sounds, print is sexy. But I think more than ‘I want to work in print’ (which I do!), it was more about the actual content. I come from a music writer background, so I was interested in doing different forms of storytelling that I’ve never done before.
What is that print can offer audiences better than Internet and vice versa?
Print offers tangibility, intimacy, and a certain essence, or presence, that doesn’t hold with the Internet. The Internet, on the other hand, gives a platform for more voices and makes sharing a lot easier.
If you had one goal at HRDCVR, what would it be?
To make something that I’m proud of and would want to keep forever.
Describe your creative style.
Getting stuff done between sporadic dance breaks!
Big lesson you’ve learned working in journalism/writing?
The importance of ledes.
Book or podcast you’re reading or listening to right now?
Just read Something Wicked This Way Comes (by Ray Bradbury) while slowly but surely getting through Moby Dick.
Any advice for young journalists/writers starting out?
I still consider myself a young writer starting out, actually. So from young writer to young writer, I’d say that it helped me a lot to just email or ask out other journalists for coffee, hear their story, and heed any advice. Some things I’ve learned: Carve yourself a beat, but show others you’re capable of doing a lot of things. The other thing is to never waste a good opportunity—if you’re interning at a publication, get your byline out! Do extra work outside of your hours. Get noticed.

Potent minimalist art sends a strong message about police and vigilante brutality in America
Journalist and artist Shirin Barghi has created a gripping, thought-provoking series of graphics that not only examines racial prejudice in today’s America, but also captures the sense of humanity that often gets lost in news coverage. Titled “Last Words,” the graphics illustrate the last recorded words by Brown and other young black people — Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and others — who have been killed by police and vigilantes in recent years.
Let us not forget their voices
