Textual inspiration
For the final project, we wanted to focus on the idea of nowness through meditation and nature, sourcing poems and mentionable quotes from many influential people. We made sure to keep the idea of nature and time when looking for our text. For example finding inspiration form Douglas Stewart, Nigel Bangret, the Dalai Lama, Rabindranath Tagore and Søren Kierkegaard.
For example the words of the Dalai Lama perfectly encapsulate our idea of now
“Time passes unhindered. When we make mistakes, we cannot turn the clock back and try again. All we can do is use the present well.”
Another honourable mention the poem Endless Time by Rabindranath Tagore
“Time is endless in thy hands, my lord. There is none to count thy minutes. Days and nights pass and ages bloom and fade like flowers. Thou knowest how to wait.”
This perfectly combines our idea of now in nature.

Reading an article on animal totems and the spiritual meaning of coming across wildlife. We've placed a ladybird at the beginning of the book to symbolise the fulfilment of wishes and a new beginning.

This is one of Sophie Rhode's amazing drawings inspired by the meditative experience in the gardens. Reflective of the disregarded nature of insects, being so small one has to consciously be aware of its prescience. This has revealed the importance to pause, self reflect and be present of our surroundings. The most trivial aspects of life, may play the most important role.

We've decided to depict our photographs in black and white. Typically black is associated with heavy feelings, symbolised with power and strength. Where as white is considered safe and open, linking to righteousness and good. The juxtaposition between these two elements, are reflective of the environment of the gardens against the city landscape. Further research on the psychology of black and white colour itself and the colour theory was explained in the following segment. "In terms of light frequencies (additive color theory), white is the presence of all colors and is therefore a color. Black is not; without light everything is black. However, when thinking about color in terms of physical pigments (subtractive color theory), like paint, the tables turn; white is not considered a color while black is the presence of all colors." A few shots from the Chinese Gardens. Documenting this assessment has been one of the most self reflective processes as an artist. It's pushed me into the direction of the type of practice I want to explore- one that is meditative and elevates people towards self reflection and growth. Walking around the Chinese Gardens the chaos of the city was almost muted, I recorded an audio of my experience walking around the Gardens. You can hear the contrast between music, cars and people talking, to the waterfall, birds and wind. It was interesting to note that although you're in a calming environment, I still felt like I couldn't escape the city. Everywhere I looked there is a struggle between the urban and natural factors. Such as the buildings in the background and noise pollution. The experience encourages us to sit down and reflect on ourselves from the catalyst of nature. I believe that immersing yourself in the environment has healing properties that are crucial for the "now"- to be present, and for a better 'you' in the future.

Found this succulent greenery that my mum was about to plant. I thought the different tangled positioning reflected Wilson's work in my previous post. This might be interested to incorporate as a drawing.

- I thought this is quite similar to the style of Sophie’s intricate ink drawings. We could perhaps, create prints.

Shona Wilson

Shona WIlson is a contemporary Australian sculptor, who engages with natural found objects creating abstract assemblages. She states the repetitive nature of nature’s debris enables her to understand the world we share. The materials represent knowledge and information to explore our very existence.
I was drawn to her work with her Mandela like designs. I felt a sense of ease, like there is a continuous cycle that is concerned with the past, present and the future.  I felt it would be interesting to integrate natural found objects, like the work of Andy Goldsworthy. A meditative practice that reflects the “now”, and we can draw the new object in the book that presents a transition between the present and the future.

Stemming from the theme of ephemerality. My group and I are reflecting on the temporality in nature. We want to create a scroll like "book", that captures a series of three environments such as the beach, forest and a waterfall. Within these environments is a meditative presence and self reflection concerning the now. The scroll is going to be minimalistic, with small drawings similar to zoological diagrams, that include figure 1 etc. As well as film pictures and poems (inspired by the book milk and honey), that we will make when present in the environment. As the scroll transitions there is a sense of decay, we want to finish with a series of steps that aim for preservation in the future or how to pass on to someone else to have a sense of meditative practices.
