Chapter 13 FieldWork
These are some of the Questions I asked my close friends :
Where did you live before migrating ? I lived in Germany. I would like to go back to Germany to build a family.
Where did you migrate to and why did you choose to migrate there ? I migrated to Maryland in the United States and I chose to migrate there because my mother wanted us to grow up in a better environment and situation.
How old were you when you migrated to the US ? I moved here when I was nine which was in 2012.
What did you hope to achieve when you moved ? I wanted to make new friends, find a better school and better home for my family.
How did you feel when you left your family and friends ? I was very sad, even though I was very young I still remember crying and having to leave.
I would consider my friend a Labor Immigrant because her mother moved to the United States for a better job and life opportunities. I went on to ask how was it when migrating across the country and as she began to tell me you could see it was a very hard story for her to tell. She proceeded to tell me about everything she went through when migrating. She said during the process she wanted to give up because even though she was leaving for a good reason, she was still leaving behind a lot. she didnā€™t know how makes new friends was gonna go or how would in her in the United States. I asked her did she regret migrating now that she is settled into life and she said no. sheā€™s happy her mother made that big step to help them but she would definitely go back and live there. Iā€™m glad she shared her story with me because it was very hard when she was detailing some of the traumatizing things that happen that I didnā€™t include. Iā€™m glad I got to learn more about her background.

Chapter 10 FieldWork
Karl Marx social theory was Bourgeois and Proletariat. In this article it gives a good example of this theory in modern day. Proletariat is the working class people or even be considered the ā€œlower class ā€œ because of the minimum sources to jobs and low wage jobs in the area. Making minimum or less causes people to lose their homes, not have enough money for food or to provide for their family. In this article it states that about 44% of Americans between the ages of 18 to 46 are qualified as low wage workers because they hourly pay is only 10 dollars which is not enough for day to day life. About 16 million people are are earning 150% poverty line.
Pierre Bourdieu social theory was based of the education and materials you had access too. He believed that the role of education in society was a contribution it makes to the social reproduction. Bourdieu defined this social reproduction as the reproduction of social inequalities through generations meaning he believed thatā€™s how it should work. In this article it examples how basically Caucasian ļæ¼ļæ¼ people get the upper had because they have more resources than African Americans would. Once the pandemic started, it caused children to have school online which makes is harder for African Americans because Caucasianā€™s are given more resources and materials for online learning them African Americans are.
Max Weber social theory was based on a persons market position, which is basically how much money or wealth they have and their bargaining power to get this. He also introduced the ideas on power and status as making up a full picture of a persons position in society. Status is referring to were someone stands in life. In this article, it explains how women and men in healthcare are getting pay gaps because of their gender. ā€œMore women are choosing to become pediatricians than are choosing to become neurosurgeons, thatā€™s true. But the gap persists within specialty, too.ā€ Women are trying to go in fields that men are getting paid higher in. This relates to his theory because itā€™s shows how wealth can be played in gender roles.

As far as I know and talking to my grandfather, my family goes back at least 5 generations. Most of them came from Portuguese which are like a southwestern European area. Yes, I feel like my family has embraced the American Nationalism because it now have started a new culture when coming to American. When talking to my grandfather, he told me his parents, parents did migrate from Portugal to American and they expressed it through their food, their language and other things they did over there while they were there. I donā€™t have any pictures of my ancestors at the moment, but now that I have figured out more about my pass ancestors, itā€™s makes me wanna learn more about what could be possible have in my and learn more about those cultures.

Microaggressions: Common, everyday verbal or behavioral indignities and slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, and negative messages about someoneā€™s race, gender, sexual orientation or religion. ( Copied from the book )
Tumblr media
Microaggressions arenā€™t always in a bad well, they are just worded wrong. For example, the picture above is a representation of people asking this young black girl if they can touch her hair. Why? Maybe because they donā€™t believe this could possibly be her real hair. Also one of the signs say ā€œ where are you REALLY from ā€œ putting emphasis on really because they think sheā€™s not from where she is saying and be,Iā€™ve she from somewhere else because itā€™s not normalized that people donā€™t have to be a certain race or ethnicity to be from there.
Institutional Racism :Patterns by which racial inequality is structured through key cultural institutions, policies, and systems.
Tumblr media
I used the example of police brutality because this relates to the system being broken because of the hatred they have against an African American. We are an automatic threat to people that should protect us but instead soon as they pull us over they have their hand on their gun. They are racial African Americans. For example,as the picture shown above, we go into a hair store and the workers are following you around in the store because they think just because we are black that we are ā€œ stealing ā€œ.
Miscegenation: A demeaning historical term for interracial marriage.
Tumblr media
Around the 1950s, an interracial couple was illegal and if the babies were mixed they would most likely call them a lot of different slurs because their parents are in two different races. An African American being with a non African American was illegal back then because they didnā€™t feel as though it was right since an African American was put on such a low petal stool. In other words, if this did happen, it would be criminalized.
White Supremacy: The belief that whites are biologically different from and superior to people of other races.
Tumblr media
This is a photo from last year when Trump had the Trump supporters storm the capitol. Whites feel very entitled to everything and feel like African Americans deserve nothing. They make meaningless comments, they do unordinary things for no reason. In today's world we call white people ā€œKarensā€ when they act as such which means when they try to fault an African American for something and make a scene to make the black person look bad. The older I get the more I see the way they feel entitled when they shouldn't at all.
Jim Crow: Laws implemented after the U.S. Civil War to enforce segregation legally, particularly in the South, after the end of slavery.
Tumblr media
Following this law right after the 13th amendment passed, I think this photo represents freedom. We deserved that freedom. Our freedom shouldnā€™t have ever been a token. This changed a lot in the world that we all still celebrate today. We celebrate days such as Juneteenth which is the date related to ending slavery, we celebrate this every year on June 19th. This is a very important day for African Americans to celebrate which I love that we have this day to celebrate. This holiday has been celebrated since the 1800s by African Americans.
Racialization: The process of categorizing, differentiating, and attributing a particular racial character to a person or group of people.
Tumblr media
In this video and picture it represents the different types of stereotypes that black women encounter. These are three different women that show those examples. The first one is mammy, where she is supposed to clean up around the house after everyone. The second one is sapphire which is seen as the stuck up girl and aggressive girl but itā€™s really not like that. Lastly is Jezebel which is seen as easy access for men and their body is only used for men. These are stereotypes that are put on to people but it really doesn't be that.

The location I chose was a lil plaza up the street from my house. This location grabbed my attention because of all the different necessities it had around it. It had fast food restaurants, grocery stores, home stores, etc.
What I noticed in my observations that I never noticed before is how many people actually use this little plaza daily and how some people donā€™t even have this. Iā€™ve also noticed that itā€™s a very small plaza with a lot of business so thereā€™s a lot of accidents and long lines in the streets such as chick-fil-a, having it backed up and also starbucks.
Something that is absent that you might expect to find there is a gym or even urgent care. I feel as though a gym would be very convenient since so many people already stop there and itā€™s around lots of different neighborhoods.
This space may have been impacted by convos due to people not having people for people to come by things so their business can run smoothly. For example, when vivid first began and people were losing their jobs and stuff some people couldnā€™t afford to eat out at chick-fil-a and also there wasnā€™t that many people going to work so starbucks would probably be really slow because usually thatā€™s when people get starbucks.

What I learned about myself when completing this assignment is I donā€™t always need to get the things I want. Itā€™s okay to get some of the things you want sometimes, but you should always put your needs first. I also realized how so of the items I really donā€™t necessarily need. I might feel as though I need them but I donā€™t. I feel like itā€™s called adulting and know what to spend money on and when. Iā€™ve learned to prioritize my needs and not my wants cause I will make a way to get what I want but Iā€™m growing and need to prioritize differently.

When it came to listing the things I want and need, it made me realize somethings I really don't need and it's more so of a want. The items I have listed and it's a need, I tried to be as realistic as possible and think if I really needed them and most of them are a need for me. For example, my airports are a need for me because music keeps me calm whether I'm going to class or walking around. So most of my items are preferably needed for me, everyone else might not think some of my needs are considered needs to them.
Now when it comes to things I want, I know these definitely are wanted items because I could live without them and I don't need them. But sometimes you get what you want and sometimes you have to put aside what you want for your needs. Everything I put on the list as a want It was and want and of course I want more. This really made me realize my wants and needs and how the things I want I need to take a step back and categorized them before getting things.

The First Electric Fan !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. History: The first electric fan was discovered in 1886 by Dr. Schuyler Skaats Wheeler. He first created a small, two-blade desk fan that could be powered. He had made the fan out of brass. Everyone who worked inside during the summer realized it was very helpful in keeping them cool. Although the fan was helpful to many, it also was dangerous because there was no cage around the sharp blades. During the 1920s, the production of steel blades reduced prices. The designs also started to change when GE overlapping blade design stepped in and made the fan quieter than previous models. Instantly fans became a very common appliance in most households.
2. Manufactured In: Most of the fans are manufactured in America. A lot of the ceiling fans we use are made in China and other places across the world. There are a lot of different brands and types of fans. For example, thereā€™s a brand name Lasko that was manufactured in Franklin, Tennessee. So although ceiling fans are a made in America, the regular stand up ones are manufactured throughout the United States.
3. Impact: The impact a fan has on my life is very significant because this is a way of my sleep every night. I turn the fan on to keep my cool throughout the night because I prefer not sleeping in the heat. During this time of the year, everyone has their heat on so that means itā€™s going to be pretty warm throughout the house which I donā€™t like. Luckily I have a roommate that likes sleeping in the cold as well. A fan has helped me from not having nose bleeds at night and being able to breathe. I feel as though this is an impact a lot of people have.
4. People Involved: Some people who are involved with making fans are mostly Americans. Americans play a big part since most of the different brands of fans are made strictly in the United States. Now ceiling fans have more people like Chinese and other cultures involved when making ceiling fans because they are made in China. For the brand Lasko, the manufacturer works about 13-16hr. This company marks about 100-500 million for the annual revenue of Lasko products.

Increasing Immigration : Immigrates come from all over the world to America to improve their living, higher wages and better job opportunities. Immigrates even move to different parts in the world besides America to have better life in all ways.
Tumblr media
Uneven Development : The picture representation is an example of a food desert. A food desert is a example of Uneven Development. An Uneven Development is basically the rich are getting richer and the poor and becoming more poor. Food deserts have to do with this because thereā€™s plenty of different supermarkets in areas where people are paying more for their rent. Thereā€™s less supermarkets where people are not paying so much for rent.
