ever since the day calvin has left town, maeve swore to herself and to her pet greece's grave to never allow him disrupt her life again. be it in films, memories, him in the flesh—but here she was, rebelling against her rules in one day. it shouldn't feel as exhilarating as it is conversing with him, but she is reminded of how it felt to be with him all those years; and well, who was she up against her high school self who viewed calvin as her entire world? "yeah, you do." she agrees but immediately adds to it as she realizes it might've sounded admitting to it, "must be crazy to have teenage girls fawn over you though. say, how many fanmails do you get in a day?"

once the impulsivity of her actions had dawned on her, maeve realizes that despite the many years spent crucifying and burying him away, she'd bear it all again for him in a bat of an eye. and even if there were truth to her words, she wonders if deborah or any of the excuses she had come up with were really for their peace's sake or for the sake of her longing heart. her mind is in a haywire, choosing to ignore calvin's words until they hasten. but, it was as though the universe truly hated her because as she finally looks at calvin to hum along, the next song that plays broke her spirit.

looking at this scenario from an outward perspective, one could find it hilarious how fate operates. from an upbeat country song to the nostalgic, heartwrenching tune of snow patrol's chasing cars; maeve wanted the ground to swallow her whole the moment she hears the first beat. of course, it had to be their song. she doesn't want the car ride to become awkward however, but how else will she react? "um, remember senior prom? we almost got kicked out of the school gym for always coming up to the dj booth to request this song?" she asks the first thing that pops into her mind. it may have been a poor choice on her end to scavenge through the memory box, but it seems he also has the same thing in mind.

"waller mill park?" she repeats, verifying if she's heard it right the first time. that place holds so much memories that it'd been years since the last time she went there, avoiding it at all costs. "i-i believe so, yeah. kayla was just there with her friends a few days ago." she replies almost immediately, not wanting to seem affected by the mere mention of it. however, as they rounded the corner of the street that is too familiar, she panics. "are you sure you want to go there? i could be wrong." well, she isn't wrong as they reached the park's entryway still in fact intact.

it took no time at all for calvin to fall back into the routine of teasing maeve. “oh?” calvin gleams with renewed confidence. “my apologies. i do have that effect on people.” he shrugs in an exaggerated manner, aware of the absurdity in his statement. although it might not be entirely far-fetched, considering calvin has to be a heartthrob of sorts to appeal to the greater mass. 

calvin’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise, not really expecting maeve to acquiesce in spending more time with him. well, thank you deborah. the nosey woman has unknowingly become calvin’s wingwoman. “oh, sweet deborah,” he chuckles. he would’ve made a remark on how nice it was that the woman hasn’t changed, but he recalls maeve’s earlier words—his words said back at him—about change in small towns, so he decides not to. “i suppose i have her to thank,” he says ambiguously. 

with the morning sun beaming down on them, calvin has not felt this cheery in what seemed like a long time. country music softly fills the space as he turns on the sound system. humming along to our song by taylor swift, he appears to be in an upbeat mood. just a few hours ago he had dreaded being back in town, but being with maeve has changed his entire perspective. and he wonders, foolishly, about what else maeve could change about him. he banishes the thoughts away almost immediately. those dangerous, hopeful thoughts.

the clicking of the turn signal pulsates as calvin prepares to turn a corner. “is waller mill park still around?” he asks innocently enough, even though maeve has likely already seen through him. situated in the forested outskirts of williamsburg, waller mill park had a restricted area they’d both often sneak into just to feel like they were alone in the world. within that restricted area, they had discovered an abandoned treehouse they’ve designated to be their own little place. contrary to popular belief, small town life can get a bit suffocating with everyone being up in their neighbors’ businesses. calvin and maeve were teenagers once too, and had both often wanted to find escape from the rest of williamsburg.

maybe the purpose of life is to fill it with as many positive things as you can. regardless of how bad life gets, don’t let it steal your personality, your hobbies, your style. after coming home from a bad day at work maybe you need to sit down and read a nice book. after studying non-stop for so long, maybe you should finish that crochet project you’ve been putting off because you’re so busy. maybe we should prioritize the things we love, the things that make us happy, and not just the things we’re forced to do to survive. in this society, a little peace from the outside world is important. don’t give up on the things that make you happy. don’t forget about yourself.

as she settles back to calvin's car, maeve dreads where their conversation could lead to. there are hundreds of possibilities, and the roulette could eventually land on something tear-jerking, heart racing, and forcing her to admit her lies. maeve hates confrontations, she'd move away from town and completely change her identity if she has to just to avoid it, yet here she was, walking straight into it.

"in my defense," maeve starts with a scoff before looking down at her watch which displays a few minutes after 8. she doesn't have to be at work until 8:30, so she feels her shoulders relax. "i was completely preoccupied with the fact that you're back in town that it totally slipped my mind." it is true, but maeve's tone registers her words in a lighthearted manner. it's not everyday an old friend visits you after many years, and calvin can't take that against her even jokingly.

there's nothing more terrifying than the idea of her co-workers bombarding them at work. most of them lived in georgia for years, and it's safe to say that surely they've known about her and calvin. imagining them running and asking about their romance was enough to send shivers down her spine. maeve immediately shakes her head at the suggestion, "absolutely not. do you remember deborah? yeah, the one who's all up everyone's business in this town? she works with me and if she sees us arrive together, chaos ensues." she grabs her phone to text a co-worker to cover her shift for her, not really having much of a choice. "well, i guess i'm all yours for today." the one thing she swore she would do was leave this situation fast, but perhaps, life does work in mysterious ways.

the soft chortle of kayla getting amused at his and maeve's back and forth lightens his heart. "just you wait and see kayla. your mom and i will soon be needing diapers." he quips, eliciting a playful eye roll from the child. "your dad is probably already wearing one," he adds, simply out of spite and with his eyes on the road, doesn't catch the confusion that crossed kayla's face. calvin could be an asshole at times, but in his defense, it's always for the sake of someone else. he sure hopes that james is holding up his end of the deal in raising kayla or else there'll be hell to pay.

"no kidding." he responds, hiding the disappointment seeping out of him with a side grin. he has forgotten what it was like in a small town, where most everything was within walking distance. without meaning to, he begins to fear that the same short drive will happen with maeve, meaning less time spent with her. calvin absent-mindedly watches as maeve took kayla to school, taking in a long & deep breath and letting it out with a soft huff.

he knows he should just leave maeve be, but he never realized how much he has missed her until she was literally right there in front of him. so he starts to think of a way to stay in contact with her and it doesn't take long for him to come up with an idea. it is simple—he should befriend her. they could at least be friends now, right? now that they've reconnected.

he deflects the question with one of his own. "what time did you say you're supposed to get to work? oh right, you didn't," he remarks, none too innocently. "i guess i'm abducting you for the day then." he only half-jokes. "what are you doing for work today anyway?" he asks as he starts up the engine and drives with no clear idea of where they were supposed to go. "tour guiding? maybe i can crash whatever it is." he isn't aware that he's overstepping his boundaries or that he might be pushing it too far now with maeve.
