Tom: I saw Lance and I started talking to him and I just did not care what anyone else thought. I think that was for me was like, “oh…”

Matt: Had you been trying to suppress it then, before?

Tom: I don’t think I was ever trying to suppress it, if you ask any of my friends… It was like one of those things if I had met a girl… People knew I was kind of flirty with everyone. I’m not flirty with everyone now, just flirty with Lance now.

Lance: He’s a flirt.

*everyone laughs*

Lance: I am too!

Tom: You’re really guilty of being a flirt because he’s southern to eastern Texan. The one thing Lance does, if he sees someone, he’ll grab their shoulder, or rub their knee…

Lance: That’s a big difference between where I’m from in the US and here. Where I’m from, the behavior that you demonstrate even with a stranger, someone you barely know, if you do it here, it’s considered flirtatious, it’s considered really forward. So you’re taught to touch people, and ask a lot of personal questions, and eye contact, and hugs…

Matt: So what was it like the first time you did touch his knee, and put your arm on his shoulder? Did he flinch?

Lance: There wasn’t a whole lot of contact. It’s one of those things… Sure, he was really cute, I’m not gonna lie. Did I want to give him a kiss? Oh my gosh, yeah. Did I dare? No, I wasn’t going to initiate that. We just talked and talked and talked for hours and hours. That’s when I knew… I remember calling my mom the next day. I remember just telling her, “Mom, I’m in trouble.”

Matt: I love the way that you describe it as trouble rather than “Mom, I’ve got something really exciting to say!”

Lance: Well, it’s no secret that I’m a little bit older and I’ve been in relationships, and so, you know, it’s not just about the sparkles and the giggles and the butterfly weddings, I know there’s a responsibility and that there will be ups and downs and a relationship is work. I saw it coming, it was coming at me like a freight train.

Matt: But also, Tom you were at a different stage of your journey to kind of explore and express your sexuality, than you presumably thought you had to be careful with that. Its quite a sensitive time for somebody to go out there isn’t it? And if you just get in there like a freight train—look at you, why are you smiling?

Tom: It was, yeah—I was definitely, I was definitely the freight train.

*everyone laughs*

Lance: I was gonna say, I was gonna say! No comment!

Lance: I was not… I was not,..

Tom: Believe it or not, Lance was quite a shy person. I wasn’t, I wasn’t.

Lance: I didn’t have to do any work. Let’s just say…

Tom: Alright!
