ksxryosuke:
“Anytime, Shimo-chan,” Ryosuke said back. He didn’t understand why he had to be thanked for that, considering Kyoso was doing great on his own. The younger male probably achieved more than he did, but he’s willing to encourage him more if needed. “But I’m not kidding, you know? Only to move now is forward.”
Maybe he was getting ahead of himself, and he knew things could still go different ways—but he was so excited. The prospect of going home and watching one of his friends do what he wants had him eager for it. And with there being a chance of it happening in Osaka, Ryosuke had already thought of the first few places he was going to. Maybe he could even take Joon with him to Japan. “I know you’ll do great, Shimo-chan. Hey, I could bring those uchiwas with your face on it!” He laughed heartily, forgetting that he was still on ice, before falling flat on his ass once again. “Ow!”
“it sounds like some kind of slogan for a company,” he considered after a moment with a small laugh. it probably was a slogan, he vaguely recognized the words, though he wasn’t sure what company it might be. ‘the only way to move now is forward’,” he spoke in some dramatic tone, moving his hand across the air like the words were written in the air.
at least he had the confidence that he was going to do well, more confidence than ky actually had in himself to do well. he had taken a long break, and was in the middle of the field back when he had first jumped up to the senior stage. while he was no longer one of the youngest senior men, he was still pretty inexperienced compared to some of them. “oh please don’t,” he stated with a groan, “just buy some flowers or something you can chuck at me afterwards.” he was laughing again as ryosuke went down again, bending a little to offer out his hand, “careful. you alright?”

ksxryosuke:
Taken aback, Ryosuke could only nod hastily at Kyoso’s request. The crash was probably worse than he thought and it obviously didn’t make him feel comfortable. “Okay…Okay, I won’t look into it,” Ryosuke reassured the younger male softly. “Hey, it’s all in the past now, right? Nowhere to go but forward now, Shimo-chan.” Ryosuke gives Kyoso a wide smile, if only to give the younger jock some sort of encouragement.
He couldn’t help but giggle at Kyoso’s enthusiasm. His excitement was infectious in itself and Ryosuke himself was growing more excited for him. “So there’s a chance of it happening in Osaka then?”, he asked a bit too excitedly himself. He’d wanted to go home to Osaka and if Kyoso’s competition was going to held in his hometown, he’s taking his younger sisters to watch with him as well. “If it’s in Sapporo…” he trailed off as he thought of the ice once more. Then again, the thought of having ramen from Hokkaido and even Hokkaido melon was enough to fight off whatever hesitancy he had left. “It’s going to go great, Shimo-chan! If I was in Japan, I’d go offer a prayer at a shrine for luck.” Still, he’d probably ask his sisters to do it for him then.
“might be in the past, but i bet it will be brought up all the time,” he had sort of resigned himself to that fate when it had happened, especially because he had been gone for so long. there would probably be excuses made on his behalf if he didn’t do as well as he thought, stuff he really didn’t want to be dealing with. but ryosuke was right, the only way was forward and he just had to work through it. “thanks,” he offered with a smile, “for trying to make me feel better.”
he was still grinning thinking about it, he was sure he would go back home before then, even if it was just for a little while to see his family again, but he did miss home dearly. especially speaking his own language, he rarely got to do that these days, but when he was with ryosuke it was different. “it could, or it could be held somewhere completely different,” there had only been a couple of places it had been repeated since the competition was invented in 1995. “don’t get too excited about it right now,” he added with a laugh of his own, “it’s ages off yet and i still don’t know how my season is going to go and if i’ll be invited.” he didn’t want his friend getting all excited about it, only to be disappointed in the end.

ksxryosuke:
Maybe Ryosuke really did live inside his football bubble because he himself didn’t know about it. “I…didn’t know. But I promise to look into it.” There was probably a lot more to the story and Ryosuke himself wanted to know, but the younger male had already told him so much so he decided to check the other details on his own. “Still, I’m sorry for bringing it up.” He did feel bad that Kyoso had to go through that, but he was an athlete just like him. It’s not surprising because he knew it happened, but it still didn’t make him feel any better.
“November? Yeah okay, I think I can fly home for that!” Ryosuke had exclaimed a bit too enthusiastically. He’d at least have an excuse if he didn’t want to go home over the Christmas break because he’d already gone back home to watch the competition. “Is it going to be in Osaka, Tokyo or Hokkaido? Because if it’s Hokkaido then I have to get ready for that. I already can’t take this,” he said as he makes a show of waving his arm at the ice rink, “so I might not be able to tolerate Hokkaido even more if I’m not ready.” He listened intently to Kyoso’s explanation despite not understanding some of the figureskating jargon. Worlds? Figure skating had a grand prix? What? “They’re going to invite you, Shimo-chan. I can already feel it,” he tells him optimistically. Ryosuke knew that if Kyoso did well enough, then Japan was bound to invite him once again.
“you don’t have to look into it!” he practically squeaked out, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. “it’s... uh... pretty nasty.” two skaters crashing into each other at full speed was not very nice to look at, and he didn’t want his friend to see that kind of stuff. it had been brutal, just laying there on the ice, arm all wonky with a cut open chin. even a year on he couldn’t bring himself to find the footage of it and watch it again, that was one part of his skating career he was quite willing to just push to the back of his mind and forget. but no doubt when he returned to the ice it was all that anyone would be talking about when his name popped up.
the grin on his face was still there, nodding his head just a little as he shuffled his feet a little, still keeping perfect balance to stop himself from slipping over. “i don’t know where it’s going to be held yet, but it’s been all over the place. tokyo, osaka, sapporo, hiroshima, nagoya, just to name a few,” he responded with a small shrug, “it’s been held in about fifteen different places over the years.” so he really couldn’t say where it will be held this year. “no hokkaido, yet,” he added with a slight laugh, but that could change for all he knew, but part of him was hoping for osaka to make it easier for his parents to come and watch. “it depends how my competitions go,” he needed to get to work and really buckle down.

ksxryosuke:
He shrugged at Kyoso, almost embarrassed that he didn’t know about the crash that he mentioned. “I wasn’t interested about figure skating before all this, remember?” Ryosuke did feel guilty that he made the younger male tell him about the crash because it wasn’t a pretty story itself and Kyoso must still feel bad about it. “That’s a nasty crash…I’m sorry I asked, Shimo-chan,” he apologised softly. The older male had to curse himself for being reckless at the question. Think things through next time, Matsumoto, he thought.
Ryosuke couldn’t wait to tell his sisters that he just saw a figure skater do a jump live. At that thought, maybe seeing Kyoso compete would be much better and all the more amazing to look at. Besides, he could support the younger jock in the competition too. “Well yeah, but you feel great in ice anyway right? Of course I don’t mind coming home! I get to watch you too so that’d be a nice thought. And I didn’t know NHK held figure skating competitions too,” he told him, actually surprised by the information. Clearly, Ryosuke’s spent far too much in Korea already and surprisingly, he didn’t mind all that much.
“i was in the news and everything,” more the american news, really, seeing as he had crashed with their top skater at the time, but ky had come off worse than that guy had. “it’s fine, you were curious about it,” and he wasn’t about to keep a secret from his friend, if he was that curious he could just go and look it up on his wikipedia page. yes, he did have one of those, he was actually quite surprised himself when he came across it. he only found it because he liked looking himself up sometimes and watching youtube videos of his old performances.
he grinned just a little, quite pleased that he would actually want to come back to japan with him, even if it was just to watch him skate. “it’s normally held late november, so it’s some time off yet,” plenty of time to perfect his two routines. “the competition is part of the grand prix series, but i’n not qualifying for them because it’s based on your ranking and how you performed in worlds, i haven’t skated competitive in ages and didn’t take part in worlds because i was injured and not even taking part this season. but the host nation is allowed to invite up to three skaters, so here’s actually hoping they invite me.”

ksxryosuke:
He harrumphed at the younger male, aware that he had also done such things in soccer. Ryosuke had gotten himself injured numerous times to save a game, with a hamstring injury being his most serious one. That was a month of no training and it had made him restless. “Well yeah I did. But Shimo-chan,” Ryosuke whined, sounding very much like a child. “What do you mean crashed into someone else? And then what happened?”
Ryosuked had to laugh at Kyoso’s pout, reminding him once more that he was still older than the figure skater. Crossing his arms, watches as the younger male take off again, eyes widening in amazement as Kyoso did another jump. As he landed perfectly, Ryosuke clapped enthusiastically. “That was amazing!” He beckons him to him, wanting to ask so many things about figure skating, starting with, “Can I watch your next competition?”
“you don’t know about the crash?” just thinking about it caused him to shudder a little, absently tracing the long scar on his chin with a finger. “me and another skater collided on the ice during a practice and i ended up breaking my arm in two different places, not to mention i got this.” he pulled his finger away from the scar for a moment, “fifteen stitches. it was about a year and a bit ago now. it’s what took me off the ice in the first place during my rather long hiatus.” he was still seventeen at the time, had missed out on the rest of the season and was currently missing out on the current one as well.
grinning just a little at the praise, ky glided back over to where his friend with, ruffling a hand back through his hair. at least he had landed it pretty clean, even if he was pretty sure that the first jump had been a little under rotated, but ryosuke didn’t know enough to actually notice that. “watch?” he paused for a moment, chewing on the inside of his cheek. “my next competition won’t be for months, and it’ll mostly be a practice for my new routines, so won’t be great. i plan to peak late in the season, i’ll probably be invited to take part in the NHK trophy late in the year, if you don’t mind coming to Japan.”

ksxryosuke:
Ryosuke at least grateful that they had the rink to themselves. It meant movement was a lot easier and the older male didn’t have to worry about embarrassing himself—it also meant getting to Kyoso faster without bumping into people. He had been so worried when the figure skater fell that he never actually thought about anything else but getting to him.
“That’s not in the least bit comforting, you know?”, Ryosuke pointed out. “Be careful, Shimo-chan. Who am I going to take out for okonomiyaki next time?”, he joked, masking the worry he had for the kid. He may not be the leader, but he was still one of the oldest in the clique. Besides, clique leaderships were too much of a chore and a hassle, considering Yongjoon, Jinwoo and Nari once were always entangled in ugly power struggle business whenever he talked to them. Personally, he thought the clique system was ridiculous but whatever, he had no time to deal with that. “It wasn’t? It looked cool though! Or I don’t know how to look at figure skating jumps?”, Ryosuke asked. “I haven’t seen a jump in person. What does a ‘proper’ jump look like, Shimo-chan?”
“that’s sport for you,” he offered with a small laugh and a smile to try and reassure him that he was actually okay, “it’s like you and soccer, i bet you go for hard tackles and stuff. and i bet you’ve gotten hurt doing so before.” not that he had actually watched ryosuke play very much and actually knew if he had gotten himself injured before. “i’ve only ever had one serious accident in my whole career,” he added, even if technically it wasn’t a fall, “and that was when i crashed into someone else during a practice.”
he pouted a little, “a proper jump? that was a proper jump, it just wasn’t executed very well.” but, he supposed demonstrating would be easier than explaining, so he simply grinned. turning he set off again across the ice, doing the exact same thing again, the difference was this time, he perfectly landed it, so decided to add something a little extra and stuck another double toe on the end. sticking the landing, still with only one foot on the ice from the landing, he turned, a wide grin on his face as he stuck his hands up, “it looks like that.”

ksxryosuke:
He had been busy watching Kyoso, admiring the way he glided on ice. Well now he understood why his sisters loved ice skating so much. And like any other sport, seeing a professional up close was both amazing and unbelievable. But then the figure skater fell on the ice and Ryosuke’s heart stopped. “Shimo-chan!” He skated to where Kyoso was, slipping a few times along the way, before stopping where the younger one was.
He crouched down, eyebrows furrowed in worry. “Hey, are you okay?” He offered his hand while the other held on to the side, much like Kyoso had done to him a while ago. “Be careful, Shimohata, you gave me a heart attack,” he berated the younger one softly. “That was a nice jump though! The landing wasn’t perfect but whatever, you’re amazing.” Ryosuke himself wondered when he’d learn how to do that but considering he couldn’t even balance himself properly on the skates, it was close to impossible. Besides, he didn’t have time to learn that when he had soccer to think about.
yeah, maybe going for the triple toe had not been the best move as that falling had actually hurt somewhat. ky doubted very much that his coach would be very impressed if he showed up to find that the session had to be cancelled because his student had hurt himself being an idiot. yeah, it was probably best if that particular incident was just not mentioned. while he coach was a nice enough man, he could sometimes get a little angry with you, and ky was not in the mood for a lecture.
“i’m fine,” he responded with a smile, reaching out to take the offered hand to help pull himself back to his feet. once up, he set to work dusting the ice from his legs, checking over his arms just to make sure he hadn’t grazed them. “i’ve had worse falls, don’t worry,” but it was nice that ryosuke was actually worrying about him. at least someone cared. “it also wasn’t a very nice jump,” he pointed out with a small laugh, “i didn’t get enough height and didn’t get the chance to try and land properly because i was still rotating when my feet hit.” all in all, it had been pretty much a disaster.

ksxryosuke:
He was still laughing when he was helped up. Falling on ice still hurt a bit, but he was definitely having more fun this time around. Once he finds himself upright, Ryosuke shoots Kyoso a smile and a pat on the shoulder. “I’ll figure it out!” He tells him to go back to warming up while he practiced how to skate himself. The older jock skates and keeps his balance better, before skating back to the railings.
He stays, watching Kyoso warm himself up. He was almost embarrassed at his level of skating, before shaking his head. He was a soccer player, not a figure skater; besides, Kyoso was on the national team. He was essentially a professional athlete. “Wow.” Ryosuke found himself appreciating the sport more, especially since Kyoso made it look so easy when he’d already fallen down so much himself.
it was good to see him laughing, it did make ky feel a little better about tricking him in the first place. “once you get up on your knees it is pretty easy to stand up again,” especially if you were using the side for support, “at least you are getting a lot of practice.” he continued to tease with a slight grin, quickly moving out of the way just in case a hand came towards him. before he knew it, he was the opposite side of the rink again.
with a shake of head he went back to what he was doing when an idea struck. he probably needed more warming up before attempting any big jumps, but he wanted to show off and provide even more inspiration. so, he started to build up speed, cutting through the middle of the rink as he switched to gliding backwards for a moment on one foot, swinging around as he pushed off from the ice into a toe loop. he tried for the triple, but this was not very smart as he didn’t have enough height for it, unable to stick the landing he went down, sliding across the ice before smacking into the side.
“well, that could have gone better.”

uuuh, i’m pretty sure that i don’t have a favourite thing about this place. i suppose the friends i have here make it manageable. lest favorite... the clique system. it just creates too much drama i’d rather not get mixed up in.

ksxryosuke:
Ryosuke felt a little guilty for complaining so much, but the cold was something his body never agreed with. “I know, I know. I appreciate it Shimo-chan but it’s just really cold.” Maybe he should’ve spent a lot more time at the ice rinks back home. Then again, he spent most of his winters inside the house or just anywhere warm. “You what? Wow, Shimo-chan. I’m impressed,” he exclaimed. Anyone who could easily do something he couldn’t do was impressive in his eyes, whether it be macroeconomics or ice skating.
He flashed the younger jock a reassuring smile and gave him a thumbs up. “I’m sure, Shimo-chan.” Ryosuke stayed stationary from his spot, unusually proud as Kyoso skated on. He may not achieve that kind of prowess over the ice, but Ryosuke was going to at least try again. So he glides once more, slower but surer this time, and smiled as he made it halfway with out falling over. “Shimo-chan, look!”, he called out happily, waving far too enthusiastically—which resulted in him falling over once again. “Shimo-chan, help me up!” Although this time, laughter accompanied the request.
“what i wear to compete is not the warmest thing out there, either,” it was thin and not really very comfortable either half the time, “not to mention the ladies wear dresses.” he always did feel a little jealous of the audience when he got out on the ice as they were all sitting there with their coats on and were probably a lot more comfortable than he was. either way, he had spent his whole life on the ice by this point that the cold didn’t really bother him anymore, he barely even felt it.
after a couple of laps he unzipped his jacket, pulling it off as he skated past where he had left his guards, dumping it on top of them. and then he heard his name called, spinning around to grin a little at ryosuke, but then he fell over again and was now calling for help. laughing a little himself, ky skated over to him, once again offering his hand out. “i think you need practice helping yourself stand up again.”

ksxryosuke:
He dusted off the ice once more, cursing as it melted and made his jeans wet. “Yeah, yeah. I appreciate the pep talk, Shimo-chan.” Now he knew the feeling he taught someone how to play soccer. Although to be fair, soccer didn’t need this much balancing act on ice and metal. “How do you even do this? Jesus, I can feel my joints freezing up.” The cold wasn’t helping and it wasn’t a good idea to start skating without even stretching. Damn it, he was supposed to be an athlete; how could he forget to stretch?
Ryosuke waved Kyoso off once again, telling him he could go by himself. “I’ll keep trying myself. Go warm up, Shimo-chan.” It made the elder feel guilty for even intruding in Kyoso’s training despite being forced into skating. “Go on and skate. I’ll survive.” And although he himself wasn’t sure of what he said, he didn’t want to hinder Kyoso’s training even more. Besides, the younger jock has already done so much so he might as well try harder and get it right.
okay, maybe he did feel slightly bad as jeans were not the best thing to be wearing when it came to ice skating. “i’m just trying to build your confidence,” he pointed out with the smallest of shrugs. you did need to be confident in yourself to do this, it helped lessen the falling over. “oh come on, it’s not that cold,” he did feel like he was being a little bit of a baby about it, but he decided it was not best to mention it, “i normally practice wearing a short sleeve top.” he was wearing it under his jacket and his jacket was going to come off once he did start his proper warm up.
“are you sure?” he asked, tilting his head just a little, “i mean, i did drag you into this so i should stick around and help.” it was not like he minded helping either, but maybe getting on with his warm up would help as well and he could be some kind of inspiration. “alright, i’ll be back in a minute,” it was all he said before he spun around and started off, building up speed as he started to do a couple of laps of the ring, practising his edges a little as he went.
