They don’t smoke often. The kids have a vape that they pass around on occasion, which Namjoon steals when particular flavors are available, and Hoseok bums cigarettes from staff during stressful comeback weeks. Sometimes Seokjin will procure a cigar and he and Yoongi will share it over a few glasses of expensive whiskey. Generally speaking, the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to smoking, though. All it would take is one media report and the whole group would be plastered across the airwaves being accused of corrupting the nation’s (every nation’s) youth with nicotine and vape juice. 

So they don’t smoke often. 

Namjoon has only smoked marijuana twice. Once was their first trip to LA. He and Yoongi had walked in on Hoseok coughing up a lung while a couple of their new American staff had been cackling, a still-smoldering blunt in one of their hands. Namjoon had smoked too much, Yoongi not enough, and Hoseok had gagged between hits then thrown up.  It had been awful and definitely not worth the browbeating Seokjin had given all three of them and they’d had to fake food poisoning the next day to recover.

The next time was years later and, with a little more experience under his belt, Namjoon had not made a fool of himself when he’d sat in a circle with some other idol friends, sans any of his own members. It hadn’t been awful. He felt so mellow and about half an hour in he realized that as much as he liked these people, he wanted to be home with his people while he felt this…relaxed.

Yoongi had picked him up so he wouldn’t have to wilt under Seokjin’s disapproving silence and he’d been wrapped up in a blanket with Jungkook in his arms and Jimin laying with his head on his shoulder watching an old cartoon within the hour. 

He knows Yoongi and Hoseok have had their own experiences without him, maybe more, maybe less. Whatever their history, it’s led to this.

GFRIEND towards BTS - the emperor, 5 of Pentacles, The moon - I think GFRIEND finds them as an authority figure, something out of reach, maybe they're feeling insecure around them.
