I like the top best ⛰ (We’ve paired back our hiking this year and have taken a recent mini break from mountains altogether as Cabot heals from minor strained muscles and back pain. He’s closely monitored by a team of vets and we have meds when needed. I never make him do what he doesn’t want to do, but he’s still very wild, active, and happy. He just gets hurt more easily than before. Went for a hike in the mountains today and about 5 minutes in it started pouring! Drove an hour so we pressed on.. rain turned to hail.. hail turned to more rain at the summit, and didn’t let up until we were back at the bottom. Behavior Fellow owners of Swissies age 2yrs and older- does your dog have any behavioral issues that you are working on or chronically managing? Ever since Cabot mentally matured at age ~2 he started barking at people (he’s currently 8yrs). Anybody he doesn’t recognize, and I mean anybody, including women with babies, children, and elderly people. It’s not all the time, and not in every situation, but it’s frequent enough to not be acceptable (he’s 120lbs) and it’s gotten us into trouble a couple times resulting with the person swearing and yelling at me about my “aggressive” dog. And I don’t mean just “bark”, I mean charge and baroo within 2 feet of a person’s face and follow them around baroo-ing until I manage to grab him and pull him away. He’ll do it on leash too, especially if he sees a neighbor when we go outside, but it’s more likely to happen when off leash. “You should always keep him on a leash then” - well that’s not fair and not realistic. We lead a very active lifestyle in urban and rural Vermont- hiking in the woods and on trails multiple times a week. That’s the reason I got a swissy in the first place- to have an off-leash adventure buddy. It’s our form of exercise, as daily leash walks around the neighborhood are not mentally or physically stimulating enough for either of us. His joy in life is running off leash in the woods. I’ve tried all sorts of different training methods- scolding and correction, giving commands for redirection, prong collars, chock chains.. I was recommended to get a shock collar (I didn’t. Though I was stressed and upset by his behavior, I personally didn’t want to create a relationship where I would be physically hurting him to bend him to my will). I’ve worked on strengthening his obedience for years with positive reinforcement. None of that has worked to eliminate the issue and instead I have been managing him in public by anticipating potential situations and using high value treats as a distraction.
