every time I read head in the game it feels like I’m reading it for the first time again. it’s such a refreshing piece of work and something in it just clicks in my brain, I love it 😌

I saw this the first thing in the morning after I woke up, and I think it has really set up my whole mood for today. Thank you so much for telling me this! It's nothing short of amazing to hear that this story clicks, since from the moment I first started writing Head in the Game, I accepted that it was going to be a story that might be difficult for many readers to digest and/or connect with. Not only is the focus so heavily on internal conflict, the dreaded trope of miscommunication, and the issues even a good relationship may have — but there's also the fact that I've kept the central couple physically apart in the 'present' timeline for almost the entire duration of the fic (so far). So yeah, while this is all of course right up there in terms of my own tastes, I am so happy to hear that it works for other people too!

I hope I will be able to continue delivering the kind of story that you will enjoy henceforth as well 🙏🏻

A little 因縁 (innen) bris/isbr detour

I've long believed that the switch in Isagi's age at the start of Blue Lock—from 17, as referenced in Chapter 88 (released in October 2020), to 16 as stated in the Egoist Bible (released in October 2022)—is Kaneshiro's intentional final word on the topic. However, I haven't discussed this here because people generally don't like the idea and aren't willing to change their opinions on the matter.

And I mean I get it, I also thought he was 17 for the longest time too, and even baked that information into my fanfics' timeline.

However, now that I am no longer the only one speaking about the retcon and how it is ultimately logical and valid, I feel comfortable pointing this out:

We know that Isagi started playing football at the age of four. This is an excerpt from his light novel that describes the moment he decided to start playing:

His father received J-League tickets from a friend and the family decided to go watch the game. The venue was the Saitama Stadium. His parents had little interest in soccer, but since it was a home game, the place was packed with enthusiastic local fans. Contrary to his parents' expectation that he would be scared of the crowd and cry, Isagi did not cry. “Whoa… Awesome……” As the game began, Isagi felt a throb in his chest that he had never felt before. The bright green grass and blue sky. Players chasing the ball. The crowd going wild. He doesn't know the rules or anything, but he wants to be there. He wants to chase the ball, too.

In terms of descriptions, the passage states that on the match day they had:

Good weather (blue sky)

Lush grass (bright green)

High attendance (the place was packed with enthusiastic local fans)

Free tickets are often distributed during the summer (mid-season) in the J-League. Given this, combined with the three descriptors of the event, I believe summer is the most likely time the match occurred.

We also know that Barou received a football from his father as a birthday present when he turned six on June 27th.

This makes me believe Isagi and Barou began playing around the exact same time that summer. And while it's not important and likely just a coincidence, I still find it incredibly heartwarming.

...But also, in light of the term "因縁" (innen) having been associated with them recently, this detail makes that concept even more delicious. We can now assume closely synchronised beginnings and parallel paths of growth for both, which perfectly aligns with the ideas of 'cosmic alignment' and 'predestined and unconscious connection' implied by 因縁.

And because I love being self-indulgent, I'm going to be thinking about this for a while.

Not only does Hiori say this to Barou, he also says (almost) the same thing to Isagi too!

特に馬狼くんとはなんか因縁ありげな感じやったし (Toku ni Barou-kun to wa nanka innen arige na kanji yatta shi) "Especially with Barou-kun, it felt like there was some kind of 因縁 (innen)."

And this is what Isagi replies:

それは…色々あったからなぁ… (Sore wa... iroiro atta kara naa...) "That's because.. various things happened..."

An understatement of the year, Isagi. But he's not lying.

More importantly, Hiori, what is your agenda? Especially since he mentioned both Barou and Rin in the conversation earlier and then went on to point this out about Barou specifically (notice the "Especially with Barou-kun...").

Not a bris/isbr Meditation exactly BUT...

Preface: I know that the PWC game interactions are not strictly canon, and as such i don't put too much weight on them as anything other than instances where interesting clues about characteristics and character quirks etc. might get revealed.

I don't even play the game, but I come across screenshots from time to time.

And this time I came across this screenshot that caught my eye, because of the translation attached to it. Here's the picture:

And here is the translation provided in the original tweet by Hoshi:

Hiori: ...it seems that there is a deep animosity between you and Isagikun. Barou: You guys other than Isagi. Like I said, I'm not interested in anything other than devouring Isagi.

Here the term 'animosity' piqued my interest, because it sounded counter-intuitive to me as something Hiori would say. It gave off the vibes of the type of Japanese term that comes off as strange when translated within a sentence into English, because there isn't a straightforward translation that exists for it. So, naturally, I went looking for what does the term "因縁" (innen) mean.

And here are the condensed results of what I found:

In colloquial usage, "因縁" can indeed refer to a dispute or argument. It often implies a situation where parties are in conflict, due to a long-standing grudge or feud.

However, "因縁" also relates to the Buddhist concept of cause and effect and interdependence. In terms of relationships, it suggests a sense of fate or destiny. It implies a significant (especially because it's paired with the term 深い 'fukai'= 'deep') connection or bond that has been established by past actions or circumstances. It also suggests a complex, intertwined relationship without commenting on whether it's good or bad.

So, while the 'animosity' translation is not wrong because it is also an accurate way to describe the relationship between Isagi and Barou, it misses the nuance/double meaning.

In this context, (and in my opinion this is especially likely, considering this line was put into Hiori's mouth) the use of the term may imply that the relationship is not just based on circumstantial and surface-level rivalry. Instead, it may be something deeper, complex, intertwined, and possibly even destined/unavoidable.

Kaneshiro is known to enjoy wordplays, which makes me think using this term was not coincidental (even though he likely didn't write this line — I don't know what kind of a canon-alignment-checking process they have in place over there). There are tons of more specific terms one could use to communicate a more straightforward hostile relationship, but what we got was this multifaceted term with all of its implications and potential readings.

So make of that what you will. (Don't mind if I do...)

Meanwhile, Barou's reply is of course self-explanatory. Not caring to consider the possible nuances of Hiori's words, he simply states his truth: He does not care about anyone else, and is exclusively interested in devouring Isagi.

...As we all already knew.
