We are choking on crumbs

Why do I think that we don't know anything about S3 of Good Omens and we have no spoilers yet?

Warning⚠️: Mention of content of photos from the "Edinburgh shoot".

It all comes down to "horses, not zebras".

I've so many amazing fan theories, some that I love, others that I don't like as much, but all a blast to read because they spark the most interesting and fun discussions! 🤗

But alas, I can't help but to think about the photos from the perspective of what they show and their context 😅

What we have seen

So far we have seen photos that show:

1- A film shooting involving a Teal Bookshop and its surroundings. (They had a permit!🙃)

2- All photos of shooting and actors on set were from a single day, in which filming apparently occurred during the afternoon and the evening, so possibly day and night scenes or at least different lighting conditions.

3- Three high-profile actors from the show: David Tennant, Michael Sheen and Derek Jacobi.

4- At least two of the actors (DT and MS) were dressed in costumes reminiscent of their respective GO characters but where the costumes were slightly off from what we saw in S1 and S2. The colors and styles did not quite match the styles we have seen so far in the GO characters.

5- DT had light red hair, likely a wig, which looked similar to the color in S1 Crowley, but different from the color we had seen through a tiny peek below his cap on a photo shared by fans who ran into him at the airport. The same darker shade was seen on DT in his appearance on the One Show less than a week after the Edinburgh shooting.

6- MS was seen with light colored hair that depending on the light conditions appeared a grey or yellow, sometimes even with a very faint reddish tone, from all the different photos I've seen so far.

7- The shooting took place in a real life local bookshop, with apparently no major set dressing, based on what the photos of fans before and after the shoot have shown. (Looks like a lovely place to visit!)

More info we know

We also know, from what fans on location have mentioned that:

8- Access to the street where the Teal Bookshop is located was controlled by production assistants but it was not closed to the public.

9- Other surrounding streets involved in the shoot permit were not open to the public.

10- There was rain during the filming, and umbrellas were used to cover the actors.

There's other things that are seen in the photos, like filming of a scene with DT exiting the Teal Bookshop holding something in his hands (possibly a book, newspaper or some other object; I have not seen clear pictures of it), MS with rolled sleeves, etc., but these I consider smaller details mainly because I have not seen any fan theories based mainly on these.

The above list of things we know, and particularly the fact that the filming was happening in such a public place when there has been such care in preventing spoilers, and specially after the major leak prior to S2 (The Kiss) made me think that there was something not quite right with the shoot. In clearer terms, that the Teal Bookshop filming was for something different, perhaps a promo 🤷‍♀️

Some sleuthing🕵️‍♀️

In a conversation with other fans there were mentions of the possibility that this could be a skit for BAFTA, albeit with a very tight deadline, or for Red Nose Day, which is scheduled for March 21st- plenty of time for editing.

Red Nose Day is a fundraising activity for a British charity (Comic Relief) and as far as I have seen part of the campaign includes comedic skits with famous actors. A famous example is a Love Actually reunion done in a previous year. I also know that David Tennant has appeared in at least one sketch for Red Nose Day, based on his Doctor character.

High profile actors, all known to contribute to charities filming a skit for a charity? Doesn't sound far fetched to me.

I went along exploring more about Red Nose Day and found out that the have a partnership with Amazon to be the exclusive seller of the red noses and other items related to the fundraising, as well as some other logistics related to the charity. There's more info on both Amazon's and Comic Relief websites (links below).

Going back to the idea of "horses, not zebras ", all of this points me out in the direction of the Edinburgh filming being for something different from Good Omens 🤷‍♀️

Let's have fun theorizing wild stuff, regardless of evidence, but let's not get attached to the sad stuff!

My personal theory about the Edinburgh bookshop filming is not particularly fun, but it does bring me peace 😅 so if anyone is very anxious about the GO3 theories going around I will say...

... that I don't think the shoot was for GO3.

My likeliest candidate is they were filming a bit for Red Nose Day because it's coming up in March and they have partnered with Amazon for selling the noses and some logistics. Pure speculation but figured I'd share in case anyone else needs some peace😅

Excerpt:

Crowley wakes in the half-light before dawn to find the naked angel in his arms shifting about, doubtless attempting to escape his clutches so he can fetch tea and a book. Crowley utters a wordless complaint and wraps all four limbs more snugly around the angel’s deliciously warm body, nuzzling his cold nose into the curls behind Aziraphale’s ear.

“Good morning,” the angel says softly, interlacing his fingers with Crowley’s where he’s holding him tight. “Cuddly serpent.”

“Not cuddly,” Crowley mutters, cuddling him for all he’s worth. “S’nighttime, m’asleep.”

Aziraphale chuckles, a low rumble that vibrates through Crowley’s body. “Feels to me like part of you is awake, my dear.”

Summary

Set right after the very drunken night of S1E1 when the Ineffables agreed to being godfathers to the Antichrist. It's a prelude to the other Kuniverse stories, with a more serious tone and a bit more angst than the other ones.

There's an implied misunderstanding about one of the character’s intentions but it's clarified immediately and no one is in danger at all. Some mild, classy smut. Hopeful ending.

Ineffable Bureaucracy and Ineffable Husbands

So, especially in the early days after the release of S2, I saw and heard a lot of people comparing these two as if they were the same. There were fan comics and fanart and fanfiction that included dialogue that was something along the lines of "why are they so healthy after only a few years and we aren't?" or "why do THEY get a happy ending and we don't?" And I mean, I haven't seen any of that in a while so maybe people have come to this conclusion on their own, but just in case, I wanted to point out

That they are fundamentally different. They are not the same.

And the reason why comes down to this conversation from 2x3:

So, hold this conversation in your brain while we go through this.

First of all, we have our Ineffable Bureaucracy, Gabriel and Beelzebub.

So these are the ones who, figuratively speaking, were born in a castle.

Gabriel was the Supreme Archangel for however many millenia, and Beelzebub was the Grand Duke of Hell for the same, roughly speaking. They are equals in positions of power.

So, when they fall in love, you have two supernatural authorities who have lived their existences believing that they can reasonably expect to have and keep whatever they want. After all, that's exactly what their lives have been (with the one exception being Beelzebub's Fall) - they want something, they get it, they keep it, and no one tells them no.

The biggest risk is to Gabriel. If Heaven were to find out, he would Fall. I can imagine Beelzebub being a bit concerned, but "Oh no," Gabriel probably figured "I Fall to Hell, and straight into your arms!" And I could see Beelzebub with a little smirk saying "I'd look after you, babe," in response.

The only time Gabriel actually worries is when he finds out that there's another punishment that he didn't realize was a possibility.

Falling to Hell is one thing, but having his memories erased is an actual threat, and possibly the first time he's ever been told no. This is when we see him panic, and leave Heaven in a mess, storing his memories away to keep them safe from the Metatron. We find out later that he was on his way to Hell anyway and just forgot halfway there and got lost.

And so, we have two beings who were always told they were Good Enough, who approached each other knowing they were able to have whatever they wanted, and were therefore able to communicate and fall in love in a healthy way. They didn't need to tip toe or hide, because they had no reason to believe anyone would ever tell them no until someone did. Their risk, because of their positions of authority, wasn't nearly as great as Aziraphale and Crowley's risk.

So now we come to our Precious Ineffable Husbands

Crowley and Aziraphale start off in much lower positions on the Celestial Food Chain. We know that they have to be very careful about their relationship to avoid the repercussions. They can't mention The Arrangement out loud, they can't put their feelings for each other into words. It has been made clear to them that they are always being watched, and anything they have can be taken away from them on a whim.

So how can they communicate safely when they've spent millenia living on eggshells and tightropes? Of course they won't, and of course it's going to be much harder for them to believe they can once they finally are safe. I definitely believe that they will get there (for my own wellbeing I have to believe that their love is stronger than anything), but they will need to fight tooth and nail in a way that Gabriel and Beelzebub didn't. All because they aren't figures of authority.

It might honestly be another good argument for Crowley taking the Grand Duke of Hell job (even though I reeeeaaaally don't want him to). It would put them in the same position as Gabriel and Beelzebub, and might give them the footing to actually escape the system (even though I think it's more likely that they're going to dismantle and/or repair the system in s3, but that's my own opinion).

These two pairs aren't mirrors of each other. Rather, they illustrate the problems with inequity that Crowley was pointing out in Edinburgh. And if S2 showed us that, I'm hoping S3 will show us possible solutions for it.

I’m thinking that the conversation on the wall as the humans made their way away from Eden was a major formative moment for Crowley.

When Crowley says “You’re an angel, I don’t think you CAN do the wrong thing,” he is absolutely yanking Aziraphale’s chain. The book explicitly says it’s sarcasm and in the show, David Tennant’s delivery makes that clear with his smirk and sneery tone.

But when Aziraphale innocently takes the comment at face value, Crowley lets him think it was sincere. It’s his first act of kindness toward Aziraphale. My reading is that Crowley is happily surprised that an angel would allow himself to be comforted by his words and it takes away his desire to tease. He got his first little taste of doing good AND HE LIKED IT!

That interaction is perhaps the first time Crowley realized that he’s not necessarily cut out for sowing misery.

Also, consider his shock at Aziraphale’s admission.

Crowley was told to come to Eden and make trouble so he did. He doesn’t seem to have thought about it at all, just got an order and executed it. What if learning that Aziraphale has given his sword away is the thing that makes Crowley realize that he, too, can make his own unexpected decisions.

It was Crowley that gave free will to the humans, but maybe it was Aziraphale that made Crowley realize that he could also have free will. Even though Aziraphale hasn’t embraced his free will, he has perhaps just given Crowley the impetus he needed to do so.

And later, Crowley returned the favor when he explained about going along as much as you can. That was painful for Aziraphale but helped him to be more himself. It was a moment when he realized, like Crowley on the wall, that if doing good means breaking the rules sometimes, then sometimes that’s what must be done. In his guilt and fear, he didn’t put that together in Eden, but Crowley showed him at Uz.

Anyway, I’m rambling, but these two have made each other better, and happier, since the world existed and that’s just lovely.
