Here are some of my intial thoughts about Kuroshitsuji chapter 158.

The more I see of Mey-Rin as a child, the more she looks like our Ciel to me. Hahaha

It seems like Mey-Rin has been "used" for her abilities most of her life. Like, maybe that is her normal, her expectation of human interaction. The cost of "belonging," protection and survival.

This also might shead light on her feelings about being our Ciel's servant. While yes she was "recruited" by Sebastian for her abilities, she was also offered the opportunity to improve herself through education and learning new skills. She was provided for in a way that (according to Jane) was unusual for that time. Then there is the comradery she feels with the other servants, who have become a surrogate family for her. This chapter and the last has revealed how Mey-Rin has tragically lost family and support structures in the past. Might this be a clue to how she will react to preserve what she has as a Phantomhive servant.

The above point makes me wonder how much of this situation is basically how Phantomhives have traditionally groomed loyalty into those in their service and how much of this treatment stems from Sebastian's abilities to seduce humans to his will.

This chapter has strengthened my expectation that Mey-Rin will accept Jane's offer. She is a survivor and by accepting she insures her survival for a little longer. It is also the best way to protect Ran-mao and do what she can to follow our Ciel's orders to destroy the operation.

Finally, this chapter has me speculating if Mey-Rin's origin story is also part of the story of how Lao gained power and his connection with our Ciel. I'm wondering if Mey-Rin was sent to remove our Ciel as part of a power struggle early in OC's career as the Guard dog. And if the results of this decision led to Mey-Rin's employment as a Phantomhive servant and Lao's rise to power. This would also explain Lao's tendency to loyalty (as much as his position alows) towards our Ciel.

Edited to add:

After glancing at the chapter again, I considered it in light of one of my theories about the identities of the Star Lords: that the Star Lords will be those with a connection to the Phantomhive servant's past. This would be a "mirror" to our Ciel's life. It could also serve to be a way to separate the servants from our Ciel. So, when I look at this guy...

and consider the implications of the final line in this chapter "You'll... be our brother from today," I can't help speculate that we may have found a possible candidate for Polaris. As a bizarre doll, his size and strength could realistically be match for Agni whose focus was on protecting his prince.
