When a fan asked me to make a comic about how people of colour, and ethnic minorities are often over looked when it comes to autism, my first thought was “Wait, that’s a thing?” My second thought was “Ugh, of COURSE it’s a thing.”

Autistic POC, and ethnic minorities are severely underdiagnosed, and underrepresented in autistic spaces. I can’t speak for them, or their experiences, but I’m more than happy to give this situation more attention.

Hi~ I have a question: what do you think about self-diagnosing? I'm asking because for a while now I'm informing myself more and more about autism & aspergers bc I'm pretty certain I am on the spectrum. My mom, who has worked with a lot of people on the spectrum has also told me that she thinks I have a mild form of autism. I'm trying to get tested but I'm not sure anyone will do it, since I don't have any major issues in my daily life.

I believe that self diagnosing is valid. Not everyone can get a diagnosis for a multitude of reasons. I’ve heard of people being denied a diagnosis for their age, and others being denied for their gender. For some people as self diagnosis is the best they can get.

Now, I do believe that trying to get a diagnosis is a good idea, but if no one will do it then a self diagnosis may be your only option, and that’s okay.
