Choosing The Right Mattress
Tumblr media
Recently, the memory foam mattress has gathered quite a following and is being hailed as the best mattress for back pain. These mattresses are made of a special material called memory foam, a polyurethane foam with some additional chemicals added to it to increase density and viscosity.
Memory foam was developed back in 1966 but back then, only NASA used it to make aircraft cushions safer used it. It was later on used in the medical setting too, before it was finally commercialized, with the first product being the Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress.
Types of Memory Foam Mattresses
There are different types of memory foam mattresses on the market, but generally they can be categorized into high density and low density ones. High density mattresses react to the temperature of your body, so it takes a few minutes to mold to the contours of your body. Low density ones, however, is very sensitive to pressure so they mold to the shape of the body quickly but also returns to its original form as soon as pressure is removed.
Mattress ReviewsUnder $500 and Under $1000
Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic is one of the top brands in memory foam mattresses, but they do also have another title as the most expensive mattress brand. Nevertheless, those who are suffering with back pain and are having difficulties getting enough sleep are willing to pay for it, given that it is considered as one of the best beds for back pain. According to reviews, the Tempur-Pedic mattress provide excellent support for the spine, but still cushions the back softly and relieves pressure points. All these are thanks to Tempur-Pedic’s three layers: the soft cushioning Comfort Layer, the harder Support Layer, and the AirFlow System Base Layer that prevents the mattress from sleeping hot, which is a common complaint regarding memory foam mattresses.
Simmons BeautyRest
Simmons has just released its most advanced line of BeautyRest mattresses. Simmons’ NXG memory foam makes the best mattress for lower back pain due to its ability to provide individualized back support, high levels of conformability, and pressure relief. You will also find it easy to choose the best Simmons BeautyRest mattress for you, thanks to Simmons’ own evaluation measures, namely the MSI or motion separation index, the CSI or the conforming support index, and the PRI or the pressure relief index. Check the mattresses here.
Sleep Number Bed
The Sleep Number bed is also named as the best mattress for back pain by some reviews. Sleep Number beds are the best mattress for side sleepers because it offers individualized comfort no matter what position you’re in. To buy a Sleep Number bed, you will need to determine your “sleep number” or the specific level of softness and firmness that you prefer. The bed banks on the idea that each person has a unique firmness preference. Some may want their beds softer, while some may want firmer beds. Also, those who suffer from back pain will find that sleeping on their sides offers comfort and relief. But if you sleep on your side, you will need an extra firm mattress that will keep your spine aligned properly. But in case you want to switch and sleep on your back, you can make the mattress softer just by adjusting it using the packaged remote control.
If you’re looking for the best mattress for back pain, these three are your most ideal choices. Keep in mind, however, that memory foam mattresses cannot cure your back or lower back pain problems completely, but they can provide you with comfort and relief when you sleep.

Memory Foam Mattress Under 500 Dollars
Back in 1966, NASA was looking for a special material that will help astronauts to reduce the g-force impact during the lift off and landing.  Eventually they created a special visco-elastic foam material that will automatically conform to a person’s body shape, and then go back to normal when the pressure is gone!
That’s why today people still refer to the mattresses created with the material “visco memory foam mattress”.
In 1989, Fagerdala, a Swedish manufacturer, acquired Tempur-Pedic® technology from NASA. In 1992, its memory foam mattress became a global success. Here is where you can check the mattresses under $500.
Seeing the success, other foam manufactures started to make their own memory foam mattresses, mattress toppers, foam pillows and other consumer products.  You can easily find products regardless the bed sizes you have (king, queen and twin size for example) or the price tag you may expect, especially in the cheap and discount memory foam mattress category.
Important Criteria to Find Your Best Memory Foam Mattress
1. Foam Density
This is the weight in pounds per square foot.  Contrary to the common believe, foam density has a lot more to do with its duration other than the feel!  A 5 pound per cubic foot memory foam mattress outlasts a 3 pound one by 10 years in average!
Most high-end mattresses have 5-7 density.
Beware of Cheaters!
Many mattress manufacturers tell you that they offer 5 density mattress.  However, they don’t tell you that the density is only for the 1st layer (about 1 inch!) and the layers below are all 2-3 pound density memory foams!
A simple way to avoid this filthy trap is to buy only from the recognized manufacturers.   It may seem a bit more expensive, but you will save BIG 10 or 20 years down the road.  More importantly your mattress will give you the most comfort and you will feel totally refreshed every morning.
2. Foam mmHg
This is the measurement to determine your mattress’ reaction against pressure.  32mmHg or lower is considered pressure relieving, the lower the better.  Top end memory foam mattress can have a low mmHg near 10.
3. Foam Indentation Load Deflection (ILD)
This decides how soft or hard your memory foam mattress is.  A higher IDL means firmer and harder.  You need also consider the thickness of the mattress – the thicker the harder with the same ILD.
The ILD ranges from 6 to 40, most quality memory foam mattresses on the market have an ILD between 10 and 16.
Multiple mmHgs and ILDs
Top quality mattresses usually have multiple foam layers.  Each layer has its own mmHg and ILD to give you the best comfort and duration.
4. Foam Resilience
This is measured as the rebound percentage of a steel ball dropping from the height of 36″.  The higher the value, the more durable the foam is under compression forces.
5. Warranty On Mattresses Under $500
Simple yet critical.  A good quality mattress should give you 10-30 year warranty (preferably above 15 years).  Any memory foam with warranty below 10 years is a clear indication of poor quality.
6. Customer Comments, Complains and Rating
In my opinion, this is the #1 criterion you should consider. I went through soooo many online stores, forums, discussion groups and consumer reports.   And the information was just SHOCKING!
For example, one secret I discovered is that the most expensive memory foam mattress may NOT be the best.  Their Foam Density, mmHg and ILD are all impressive. However, the overall user rating isn’t that good.
One special mattress, for example, seems to overdo their job   – their density is so high and they have so many layers that the mattress becomes really HOT in the summer!

Best Mattress Under 500 dollars
Tumblr media
In recent years it seems every foam manufacturer in America as well as overseas, even in China, is churning out their versions of memory foam mattress.
Visco-Elastic, or memory foam, is created to automatically adjust to your body weight and temperature, resulting in complete, luxurious support! Because such mattress can eliminate uncomfortable pressure points that can cause poor sleep, memory foam beds help relieve aches and pains and lessen tossing and turning throughout the night.
A Visco memory foam is made up of billions of tiny open cells tightly packed together. When you lie down on the it, these cells fully compress, spreading the air to adjoining cells and making the foam mold to your exact body shape. When you move, the memory foam simply takes up air again.
The density of a memory foam has a few consequences: the greater the density it has, the more costly the material. This is because more raw materials were used to manufacture the product. And a higher density also contributes to how cushioning the product is.
However, after years of use, any visco foam mattress, be it Tempurpedic or other, could no longer regains its exact, original shape. A sag in the center of the bed becomes a permanent feature. The question is, does this happen in a few years or will you enjoy 10 plus years of sleep before you must buy a new bed or mattress?
How To choose Those Under $500
High density visco foam like the ones used in Tempur-Pedic sleep systems is also more expensive to make because more raw material called resin, rather than air, goes into making the visco elastic foam. This is one of the main reasons why a Tempurpedic mattress is so expensive than others.
Foam mattresses are great for allergy sufferers. They are allergy free and hypoallergenic and latex is a 100% natural material. They are naturally resistant and dust mites find it hard to create a habitat to survive in. In fact, dust mites cannot feed at all on Latex so they will never invade a Latex foam mattress. check out the best mattress under 500 here.
Besides mattress, memory foam pillows are a necessity if you're looking for a great night of sleep. Memory foam pillows offer incomparable support for your head and shoulders as they adjust to your contour for constant, even support.
Do remember though, no memory foam mattress can cure your sleep disorder permanently but, at the very least, it can provide some small relief where other mattresses and beds have failed. And it may only do that a few nights out of the week.
Choosing a proper bed mattress is an crucial part in your life. The average person spends one third of his or her life in bed. A bad mattress can create many health problems such as back pain or stiffness. While selecting the bed, the key elements that should be kept in mind are comfort, support, size and material.
Generally most people use spring mattresses as it is most affordable. However foam mattresses are now becoming more and more popular. A foam mattress wraps around the shape of your body without creating extra pressure at important points. It provides better support for your back.
There is one common complaint about memory foam mattress. That is that it gets very hot because of the way your body is snuggled in the mattress and the material which is thickly condensed and not very open. It caused a pocket of warmth to create around you. So if you do not like sleeping hot, either turn up the air conditioning unit or find a different mattress system.
Almost all memory foam systems are identical. The only differences are that some manufacturer find new designs or technologies to include with their product that set them apart. But never buy a mattress online without some type of warranty and 30 day refund policy, just to be on the safe side.            When shopping online for a mattress, read up on other feedbacks or testimonials. People generally list reasons why their mattress would work best for them depending on their health and situation, you can certainly use such feedbacks as reference for your shopping decision.
When you have made a decision about the mattress that best suits you, the next step is to make sure you get the best quality foam and customer service for the price. There are many factors to consider in regard to warranty and customer support issues.
Trial periods, return policies, and shipping costs are all factors that should be considered very closely when selecting a memory foam. Be sure to check around and do your homework as your mattress is one of the most important decisions you will make.
