How to choose engine oil
Tumblr media
The stable operation of a car engine largely depends on which engine oil you choose. This task must be taken with the utmost seriousness. But seriously doesn't mean difficult.
Let's try to prove it.
What is engine oil for?
An internal combustion engine is a complex mechanism in which dozens of parts move and touch at the same time. For smooth operation, it requires oil, it performs several functions at once:
creates     a thin film on the surface of rubbing parts and prevents their wear;
retains     fuel combustion products, preventing them from settling on parts;
protects     against corrosion;
cools     the engine during operation.
If the wrong oil is used, the engine can quickly break down and require lengthy and expensive repairs. On the contrary, the right oil helps to increase engine life and reduce fuel consumption.
And to make it easier to pick up the oil, we have formulated 4 main points that should be followed when selecting the oil.
Check the manufacturer's recommendations
The most important criterion when choosing an oil is the approval of the car manufacturer.
The admission that is required specifically for your car can be found out:
in     the service book that is attached to the car;
from     an authorized dealer.
However, not all car manufacturers have their own approvals. If it is not provided for your machine, go directly to the next step.
Check oil license according to global standards: API, ILSAC, ACEA
Tumblr media
All engine oils are licensed under one or more international classifications. For passenger cars, the most common are: API, ILSAC and ACEA.
API classification
The historical ancestor of all classifications is rightfully considered the International American Petroleum Institute , or API  - American Petroleum Institute. It is one of the largest national associations representing all aspects of the American oil and gas industry. Upstream, downstream and oilfield service companies, shipping companies, wholesalers and retailers are subject to API requirements.
EXAMPLE standard marking is as follows: API SM, CF API  or API SM / CF .
The first letter always indicates the engine type:
S     (spark ignition) - gasoline;
C     (compression ignition) - diesel;
T     (two-stroke) - for two-stroke engines (motor vehicles, motor boats, etc.)
The second letter indicates the performance characteristics of the oils: the further the letter in the alphabet, the better the performance.
Fractional notation (for example, SL / CF ) indicates that it is a universal oil that can be used in both gasoline and diesel engines.
The first is the grade of oil that indicates the preferred application. That is, the main purpose of the oil in the example (SL / CF) is for gasoline engines. the first is the class "S". But the manufacturer allows the product to be used in diesel engines requiring API CF oil.
The further down the alphabet, the later the class was introduced. Oils of later API grades may be used in engines requiring older grades. This means that, with rare exceptions, each new category replaces all previously released ones.
Three categories are missing from the classification - SI, SK and SO. This is intentional. SI category - to avoid confusion with the International System of Units (fr. Système international d'unités, SI). One of the Korean manufacturers of motor oil uses the SK combination as a name.
