Link Velocity : Is it a Ranking Factor
The idea of gaining a lot of links quickly sounds great for a website. But could it hurt, rather than help, your ranking? Or does link velocity not matter at all to Google? Is it just a made-up SEO term? Read on for more information.

Google patents filed in 2003 are thought to have given rise to link velocity in the SEO community.
The patent, Information Retrieval Based on Historical Data, provides suggestions regarding how a search engine should treat a website based on the growth of its link profile.
It is from this passage that the idea of link velocity is derived:
The growth in the number of backlinks may be a factor that search engine 125 uses to score documents, but it may also indicate an attempt to spam the search engine. Consequently, in this case, search engine 125 might actually lower the score of the document to reduce the effect of spamming." According to Roger Montti of Search Engine Journal, SEO experts have misinterpreted this patent, leaving out key aspects which disprove their own theory. For example, the patent defines what a "spiky rate of growth" is and how it can be the defining factor in SEO. Link building that is unnatural can be characterized by this attribute.
Patent enables demotion of websites with a pattern of unusual spikes in inbound links over an extended period of time instead of penalizing sites with rapid upswings in inbound links.
According to Montti:
"What the patent is really talking about is a smooth natural rate of growth, as opposed to a sporadic and unnatural rate of growth. A sporadic rate of growth can manifest over the course of months. A single link acquired over a short period of time will not result in a penalty, as is the case with link velocity." Experts don't seem to agree with what they say about link velocity.
Link Velocity As A Ranking Factor
Google does not officially recognize the term link velocity and there is no evidence that it is used to negatively impact rankings. Google does not use the term link velocity.
Google search representatives believe websites' links are evaluated on their own merits, rather than in terms of how many they have gained in what timeframe. Below is an example of such a response from John Mueller, Google's head of search.
"It's not so much a matter of how many links you obtain within a given period of time. It's more just if these links are unnatural or problematic in our opinion. Whether they are many or in which period, it really doesn't matter. Gary Illyes put it bluntly on Reddit, referring to link velocity as a made-up term, which means that links acquired fast or slowly aren't as important as the quality of the links and how they were acquired (naturally or unnaturally).
