I've said something similar before but I just really like the way Celine is written. She's not this comically evil stepmother who hates Rumi, but she was still a bad parent. Her behavior is clearly taught and part of a larger cycle of generational trauma, but raising a child to be ashamed and to hide and to hate part of themself because of your own trauma and the way you were raised is still abusive. She loves Rumi, but she could never fully accept Rumi. She did her best, but her best still hurt the child she took in. She feels real. She feels like someone who wanted to do good and fucked it up anyway. She feels like someone who doesn't fully grasp the negative effects of her parenting. She feels like someone who convinced herself she was protecting her child from the judgements of the world, when really she was protecting herself from having to reexamine what she believed. She didn't think Zoey and Mira could accept that Rumi was part demon because SHE couldn't accept it and had to do mental gymnastics to tell herself that Rumi wasn't actually a demon. In reality, had they been told properly, they probably would've accepted it. Zoey is open to the idea of nice demons toward the beginning of the movie. Mira's WAY more upset about the lies than anything else. The only one who really, truly believed that Rumi could not exist as a demon and a Hunter was Celine (and Rumi, because Celine taught her that).
I just really like a portrayal of an abusive parent that's more nuanced and not like, "god I hate this kid" and laughing maniacally as they make their child cry. I know parents that are that type of abusive unfortunately exist, but a representation of this kind of parent is important too. Someone who doesn't want to be abusive but still is, because there are people like that too.

Rumi's Asymmetry
Soooooo, I noticed a small nice detail in most of Rumi's stage outfits (not her casual ones). As I mention here, Rumi's "golden" costume is characterized by an asymmetrical shoulder pad:
Well, it turns out this shoulder asymmetry is a recurring visual motif for her. We find it in both...
her default costume:
Rumi's yellow jacket has spikes on her left shoulder.
and her hunter uniform:
Rumi's black jacket has spikes, zips and tassels on the left side.
Why is that so?
Well, my interpretation/head-canon is that it symbolizes Rumi's duality as a half-hunter and a half-demon. After all, in both costumes she has spikes on her left side, which ends up looking more demonic in Rumi's darkest hour:
Even if to be fair it is her right arm, which is the most demonic-like :P
Moreover, this motif seems to come up often enough in concept art:
This seems like an early concept of the girls jumping down the plane. Rumi sports an asymmetrical top/asymmetrical gloves. So, her left side appears far more demonic than her right one.
This concept art has Rumi wear a green top with only one sleeve. This time it is her right arm which is covered. Two takes: 1- Green may be a color linked to "hiding", as Rumi wears it as a child and at the beginning of the Golden video; 2- Considering this one art and the previous one, I wonder if initially Rumi's marks were meant to cover only one side of her.
Here Rumi wears armor and spikes only on her left side. Once again, her mark seems reduced here compared to her canon appearance in the movie.
Interestingly, Rumi's "golden" outfit "switches sides", as there she wears a pad only on her right shoulder. Still, it may be an evolution of this concept art:
This seems to be an early concept of Rumi losing control of her demonic powers. We see her right side is better put together with her outfit intact and more golden decorations. Her left side is instead fully demonic with her eye gleaming, her hand having claws, her patterns spreading and her pants trashed. So, Rumi's canon golden outfit highlights this asymmetry. Her right sight is golden, while her left one stays in the shadows.
In short, they probably considered having Rumi's marks spread only on one side. If so, her outfits had to necessarily be asymmetric, so that she could cover her "demonic side". As the production went on, they changed this detail, but Rumi's asymmetrical outfits still symbolize her double nature: hunter and demon, human and monster, light and darkness.

aw damn lol
Going to sound cheesy as hell, but Citrus really has been that one series that makes me feel less dead inside. I don’t know what exactly it is—whether it’s a quarter life crisis or resurfacing trauma coming back—but I was reading a few fics and talking with a few people, then started getting really fuzzy inside. It was almost like this reminder that I’m not completely cynical and hate everything and that I DO love to openly love things.
Genuinely the one of the very few series that makes me feel humanly authentic again.

there's just something beautiful about seeing a writer loop back to writing for stuff they still love
#lowkey this is about progwords#them writing for co09 for a good period#then coming back to write for trails#im not really into it but something about seeing them go back to writing for an arguably obscure fandom#is kinda comforting to see ngl#if that makes sense#turtle speaks
