Nina shrugged her shoulder. “I think they will live.” She smirked and began to look through his food for something to cook. She looked over her shoulder toward him. “I finally rubbed off on you. You can’t forget how messy you used to be. You used to have to give me a fair warning before I would walk into your home.” She teased him playfully. “I really just want buffalo chicken tenders with some french fries.” Nina poked her nose with her index finger as she tried to think of anything else she might want.

Kyle laughed. "Maybe I was just tired of being so dirty. But yes -- I do remember you freaking out over how messy I was." He leaned back against the counter. "I should have known that's what you wanted to eat." He went over to the fridge and pulled out a bag of frozen french fries. He moved things around to look for things. "I would buy this stuff just for you for when you came over." He pulled out the bag of frozen chicken tenders and set them on the counter next to the bag of fries. "It sounds ridiculous but I kinda missed you too much to eat any of it while you were gone. Like -- at restaurants I usually get buffalo wings or something with Buffalo chicken, but it kinda made me sad because it reminded me of you." He let out a soft laugh. "But anyway, are you gonna help cook or do you just wanna sit and look pretty?"

Nina was about to open her mouth to say something until he threw his head back. “I can’t help it!” She squealed loudly and gave his arm a gentle push. “You could just cancel your order for delivery and cook with me. That might be more fun.” Nina silently hoped he would cancel his order. She had been dreading the moment when he came to answer the door out of fear. She knew he had someone watching him outside of the home and she didn’t want their time together to be broken up by the danger lurking on the other side. “Don’t forget that you’re actually the messy one.” She tried to shake off the negative thoughts that were beginning to make her anxious.

Kyle paused and looked at her while he thought about whether or not he should cancel the food he ordered. He let out a sigh, “The people are probably going to be really unhappy with me, but -- I guess if it makes you happy.” He pulled his phone from his pockets and called the restaurant her ordered the food from to let them know he wanted to cancel his order. He set his phone off to the side once he was done with the call. “Me? The messy one?” He tried to fight the smile that was forming on his lips. “Look at how clean this place is. Even my room is pretty clean. -- just don’t go into the closet.” He opened the fridge to grab a water. “So what are we cooking?”

Nina searched his face for answers but gave up after not getting any. “I guess you’re right. I probably will never admit to that twice though!” She said with a laugh. “I haven’t had a home cooked meal since the last time you cooked for me so I was just hoping..” She looked down to his pants and her eyebrows raised. “Grey sweatpants are a weakness of mine.” Nina said with a bite of her bottom lip. She looked away and stood up to adjust the leggings she had paired with her sweater. “Mind if I at least cook something while you enjoy your takeout?”

Kyle shook his head and laughed. "Nice to know that even when I'm dressed lazy I'm still turning you on." He threw his head back and shut his eyes tightly. "You can't do that bitting your lip thing." He brought his head back up and looked at her. He nodded his head, "Yeah, you can cook. I can help if you need anything." He stood up along with her. "Try not to mess up my kitchen to much." He kissed her cheek before moving toward the kitchen area.

“What is sexy?” Nina looked up at him with her question forming on her face. “It felt like you giving up because I knew I couldn’t be just friends with you. I wouldn’t have been able to turn those feelings off at all.” She scrunched up her nose as tears stung the backs of her eyes. She sat up a bit straighter and adjusted her sweater. “You don’t cook anymore?” Nina turned her body so that she was facing him on the couch.

Kyle shook his head. “Nothing.” He bit on the inside of his mouth nervously, knowing she was right and there was no way they would have been able to be just friends. “We’re together now so that’s all that really matters.” He kissed the top of her head. “I do cook. I was just going to be lazy tonight. I wasn’t exactly expecting any company, as you can see.” He motioned to the sweatpants he was wearing.

“Remember you setting up a romantic dinner for us just to break it off with me for good? I went bat shit crazy so you took it back. There were plenty of times where you’ve walked away from me like that. I couldn’t blame you because you were married but it still hurt.” Nina took her jacket off as she felt herself start to grow a little too warm for her liking. She draped the coat on the back of the couch. She began to unzip her thigh high boots. “I’m sorry that I hurt you by leaving.” She struggled but eventually was able to pull off her boots. Nina squealed when he pulled her closer to him. She buried her face into his neck once she was cuddled into his side. “Oh I was going insane.” She said with a roll of her eyes and a loud laugh.

“At least your crazy side is kinda sexy.” Kyle said under his breath along with a sigh. “I didn’t see that as me giving up on you though. Even all those times where I walked away from you, I wasn’t walking away from you entirely. I wanted us to remain friends no matter what.” He shrugged his shoulders. He opened his mouth to say something in response to her apology, but instead decided to keep his thoughts to himself. “Is there anything you need or wanted?” He looked down at her. “Like are you hungry or something? I ordered food and it’s supposed to be here soon, but.. I have snacks and stuff.”

“There have been times where you’ve given up on me – on us. You’ve walked away from me many times before. I remember all of those times very vividly so no offense but my so called excuse is a valid one.” Nina had to calm herself down from snapping. She was tired of hearing people tell her that how she felt wasn’t valid and didn’t make sense. It was becoming her biggest pet peeve. She crossed her arms across her chest. “I don’t know why you’re so nervous around me.” She pulled her phone from her pocket and quickly checked in with the person that helped her get back into town safely. “I missed you too.” She finally answered once her phone was back in her pocket. “You probably don’t believe that though.”

"I honestly don't remember a time where I've given up on us, not even when I was married to someone else, so I must have been on drugs or something during that time." Kyle said with a sigh. He leaned back into the couch and kicked his feet up onto the coffee table. "I'm nervous around you because you kinda just hurt me and I just instinctively am putting distance between us. I can't help it." He picked up the remote and messed with it so he wouldn't have to look at her. He finally did look up at her when she said she missed him. He let out another sigh and dropped his head low. "It feels nice hearing you miss me." He reached over and wrapped his arm around her waist, tugging at her to come close to him. "And I do believe you. You probably went crazy without me." He teased her.

im getting so mad with everyone in my life bc literally all i need/want is for someone to just listen to me for like 2 minutes. i don’t wanna start going to therapy again because i think it’s a waste of money and time when i could have a friend just LISTEN. i dont even need them to advise me or anything i just need to get things off my chest. i literally listen to all my friends 24/7 talk about their problems and how they feel, i help them and all this crap but none of them wanna listen to me. i was trying to talk to my friend bc i said i think im about to start going down hill a little bit and she legit just ignored me and was like ‘oh ive been going down hill since october’ and now im listening to her again. i probably sound like a baby right now but god damn is it that hard to just pretend like you care

“I didn’t feel like I could come to you because again I’ve never had that before. People usually give up on me by now. Hell – even my own family did.” Nina admitted to him. She tilted her head off to the side. “Am I making you uncomfortable or nervous even?” She studied his face and body language. “If you’re comfortable with me then I’ll stay here. At least if something were to happen you’d be right here.” She motioned toward him but stopped herself from taking another step forward.

Kyle began to roll his eyes, but then stopped himself. “You can use that excuse, but I’ve been here for you for a long time. I constantly tell you that I’m here for you. I have never turned away from you for anything you’ve done. So no offense but that excuse kinda sucks.” He let out a sigh. “I’m sorry your family turned away from you though.” He bit on the inside of his cheek nervously. He avoided making eye contact with her out of fear of how she might be looking at him. “I’m a little nervous, but I wouldn’t say I’m uncomfortable.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I wouldn’t have offered you space to stay here if I didn’t want you here. I would try my best not to let anything happen to you. And like I said before -- I miss you.”

“Thank you.” Nina’s lips were taken over by a soft smile. “It sucked not being able to have my best friend to turn to about this stuff.” She gave his hands a gentle squeeze and a slight push as she leaned toward him. “You want me to stay here?” She looked around the living room of his home, shock written on her face. “You sure?” Nina was slightly nervous about staying with him. She still didn’t want to place him in any sort of danger.

Kyle shrugged his shoulders. "You could have come to me. You just chose not to. But I'm kinda used to this stuff so it's whatever." He felt his heart sink into his stomach when she leaned into him. He found himself holding his breath as she grew closer. "I mean -- of course I want you to. But it's up to you." He lightened his hold on her hands and took a step back. "You don't have to. I won't be offended if you don't want to stay here. I'm sure you have other things -- other people."

Nina stopped when he grabbed a hold of her hand. She turned to face him. “I’m so glad I can count on you.” She winced a bit when he touched the bruise around her eye. A memory of being hit in the face by a large older male flashed through her pain. Nina quickly shook the scary thought from her head when chills traveled down her spine. “We?” She found herself growing to be hopeful that there was something still between the two of them. “As in us?” She raised an eyebrow to him.

Kyle forced a smile to try and lighten the mood. “You always have me. Literally no matter what – you are one of my best friends and I’d always do anything for you.” Kyle nodded his head slowly. “Well yeah, unless you don’t want to.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I really wanna be here for you. And I miss you.” He grabbed her hands and laced their fingers together. “There’s plenty of room here for you too.”

Nina listened to him and took every word he was saying in. She focused on every sentence that he spoke and tried her hardest not to become emotional over his willingness to support her no matter what. “I’m not used to people wanting to fight for me. This is all new to me.” She brushed her nose against his but pulled her face away. “If you want me to go then I will.” Nina said in a low voice. “You don’t have to help me or give into me at all.” She moved to get up from her spot on the couch.

Kyle shook his head and stood up with her. "No -- I don't want you to go." He grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "I didn't mean it like that. I would never turn against you. I will always, always be here to help you with anything." He cupped her face with both of his hands. He gently rubbed his thumb under her bruised eye. His face scrunched up at the thought of someone physically harming her. He kissed her forehead before wrapping his arms around her and hugging her tightly. "Stay. I don't care if I'm in danger or whatever. We can get through this."

Nina grew nervous the longer the silence built between them. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him out of fear he’d have judgement written all over his face. She was shocked when he grabbed her face and kissed her. Nina melted into the quick kiss. “I couldn’t.” She said with a shake of her head. “Even now telling you is the hardest part because I would hate for you to judge me from this and not want me anymore because I’ve put you in danger.” She let out a heavy sigh. “Plus I felt it was safer for you to not know what was going on. I thought you could live a happier live by not knowing.” Nina touched his face with her hand and caressed his cheek with her thumb. “It killed me being away from you.”

Kyle rolled his eyes and shook his head. "I would never judge you for anything and I wish you would trust me on that." He looked down at his lap. "I have done plenty of bad things that I couldn't judge you even if I wanted to. But I love you -- more than you know and I would never judge you." He felt his heart skip a beat when she touched his cheek. He rested his hand on her thigh and massaged it gently. "Never ever think that my life would be happier without you under any circumstances. You need to come to me about these things. I rather you come and tell me everything than run away." He looked at her. He found himself staring into her eyes and not being able to look away. He let out a sigh and forced himself to look away. "I told myself if you came back I wouldn't give into you but this is hard." He dropped his head low.

Nina closed the compact mirror she had just pulled from her purse. She threw it back into her purse and pulled out a picture. She laid it on the coffee table. “This man has been following you for weeks now.” She pulled out another picture and laid it next to the first one. “So has this woman.” She sat down on the couch next to him and shifted her body to face him. “The difference is I hired one of them to follow her to make sure nothing were to happen to you because of me. The other one was hired by someone else to hurt you the moment they feel as if I haven’t followed a direct order.” Nina rolled her eyes. “Before I got sober I got into business with this super sketchy guy. He funded my party lifestyle and in return I moved drugs for him.” Nina dropped her ahead, feeling ashamed. “When I got clean for my surgery he saw that as a slap in the face and demanded I pay him back for a time where his shipment of drugs had been stolen. Problem is I’m broke. I don’t have that kind of money – period.” She realized she was talking at a fast pace so she slowed down. “I left because he began to threaten you. He would send me pictures of you just to show me how easy it was for him for gain access to you.” She nibbled on her bottom lip. “I had to make him believe I didn’t care about you so he wouldn’t see you as something to dangle over my head. It didn’t work. He broke into the place I was staying at a found some things of yours I was still holding onto, so now the game has been restarted and you’re once again a target.”

Kyle didn't know how he felt with her being in the same room. He was feeling a mixture of emotions and he didn't know what to do with them. When she sat down next to him all he did was look at her. He didn't speak the whole time she explained the situation to him. He was shocked to hear what she had to say and also frustrated that she hadn't come to him in the beginning. Once she was finished talking he remained silent for a few moments while looking at her. Without any thought he leaned in and pressed his lips against hers. He kissed her hard for a few seconds before pulling away. He let out a sigh and bit on his lip. "You should have just come to me instead of running away. I know you were trying to protect me, but.. You hurt me more by running away." He finally spoke up.

Nina felt as if her heart had skipped a beat when he decided to let her into his home. She stepped inside and instantly pulled off the wig and big hat. She shook out her dark colored hair. “Long time no see.” Nina turned to Kyle. Her eyes glanced him over and she found herself aching to wrap her arms around him. Instead she folded her arms over her chest. “I know I left you without a word and I’m sorry.” Nina began. “As you can see..” She pulled out a mirror from her purse and opened it to examine the injury to her eye. “I’m not back under the best of circumstances.”

Kyle nodded his head in response to her comment. He didn’t know what to say so he kept quiet. He walked over to the couch and sat down. He was too nervous to look directly at her so instead he looked around and occasionally glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. His eyebrows raised up and down when she made another comment about her being back. “I see.” He said in a soft voice. “So what happened?” He finally looked directly at her, but panicked and looked away quickly again.

Nina felt her legs shaking with anxiety and fear as she waited for Kyle to answer the door. She would occasionally look around to make sure she hadn’t been followed and wasn’t being watched by someone she knew had to be following Kyle. When the door open she held her breath. Nina froze and had no idea what to say. She didn’t realize how much she had missed him until she got to see him in person again. Her index finger touched her lips as she pulled her sunglasses off to reveal her eyes. “Can I come in?” She whispered to him. The sunglasses also revealed a bruise fading around her eye.

Kyle was confused when he saw a stranger standing in his doorway. He didn’t know if they were at the wrong door or if it was someone he just forgot he knew. When the girl pulled off the glasses it took him a second before he realized who it was. His jaw dropped, but he didn’t say anything. “Oh – uh, yeah.” He backed up and pulled the door open more wide for her. “I guess.” He mumbled under his breath. He let out a sigh. Suddenly his heart was banging on his chest. The last person he was expecting to see showed up. He closed the door after her and locked it.
