Rape on television is the theater through which both men and women grapple with masculinity—with the fact that in its most corrosive form, masculinity is a quality that wreaks violence on those closest to it. Destruction and power are built into our concept of maleness; rape plots on TV work desperately to allow men that access to power while also codifying when it’s acceptable to use.
The truth about TV’s rape obsession: How we struggle with the broken myths of masculinity, on screen and off - Salon.com
sonia wrote a really smart and thoughtful piece about rape on television and it is the most important thing you’ll read all week

also my jaw is on the ground @ the most recent john green debacle i truly cannot believe the general lack of critical thought that has to go in making the leap from “this guy romanticized teenhood and wrote some crummy books and has an obnoxious special snowflake personality” to “clearly his books pander to teenage girls and so he must be a pedophile” like i… am floored by this honestly and am honestly floored by the lack of foresight involved in making major accusations of sexual abuse based on zero evidence, anecdotal or otherwise, against a major celebrity author
#not to go into my opinions on john green or anything#but basically painting him as anything but a nice average writer making nice average books is so strange??#what's ur goal

brother: you won't believe what they did on game of thr--
me: MAD MAX WAS TRULY A REVOLUTIONARY FILM THAT CHALLENGES THE WAY WOMEN IN ACTION FILMS ARE PERCEIVED AND VIEWED AND PURPOSELY DECONSTRUCTS THE 'BADASS ACTION FEMALE' TROPE. EVERY FEMALE CHARACTER IN MAD MAX IS TREATED AS STRONG BY THE SIMPLE VIRTUE OF HER EXISTENCE IN THE WORLD. AT NO POINT DOES THE FILM FORCE ANY OF ITS FEMALE CHARACTERS TO 'EARN' THE RIGHT TO STAND BESIDE MAD MAX. FROM THE WORD GO EACH WOMAN MAD MAX MEETS IS HIS EQUAL IN EVERY WAY. NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE 'STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS' BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE HUMANS. THEY ARE ALIVE. THEY FIGHT FOR THEIR FREEDOM. THEY EXIST. AND THAT IS ENOUGH.

i think the reason shows like Angel never appealed to me is because i realized all the sad, brooding boys i knew growing up were boring very early on
