The last member of a tribe in Brazil has died

A beleaguered Brazilian Indigenous tribe's final member has reportedly passed away from natural causes. Activists are advocating for the preservation of his farm as a memorial to both the genocide and the tenacity of his people, holding up his legacy as a testament to both.

The man's death was reported over the weekend by Funai, Brazil's federal department for Indigenous issues, but little is known about him. In the western Amazonian state of Rondonia, he was the sole resident of the Tanaru Indigenous Territory.

His name, language, and ethnicity are still unknown. He did, however, receive some wider notoriety in and outside of Brazil as a result of his uniqueness and years of isolation. He was known as "The Man of the Hole" because of the deep holes he would create (often with pointed stakes inside), and in a 2018 video taken by a government team, he can be seen using a tool that resembles an axe to chop down a tree.
